Re-think your Dreadmill (pictures)

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

As winter is bearing down on us, it has forced many of us to stay in for our exercise. Oh yes, that means for a lot of us...the dreaded treadmill. Do you get bored on the treadmill? Tired of running and going nowhere? Tired of staring at the wall or the tv? Let me ask another question. How long do you spend online everyday? Ok... just Spark?

For the longest time I spent an hour watching a tv show that I recorded (taped, dvr'd... I am trying not to show my age here!) Then my husband made this contraption for the treadmill.
Let me tell you! I thought I was in seventh heaven! I could watch whatever I wanted and put my headphones in so I didn't have to have the tv up so loud the family could hear it all over our house! LOL
Then the man went one step further...after he was laid off Sept 2009 he would spend hours online looking for jobs, apply for his unemployement checks and applying for potential jobs. So to help him from going insane he built another contraption for the treadmill.

This really wasn't his idea...there are more and more "treadmill desks" and "walkstations" out there.

but like I said, he was laid off. It isn't like we could afford to pay for something like that.

Now believe me when I say that this is NOT just a board sitting on top of the arms of the treadmill. It is measured and fitted to our treadmill (see the washcloth wrapped around the left side. it stop the wood from damaging the treadmill. Also this isn't made to run on while it is up. This is to get you moving while you are doing what you would be normally doing sitting still. The fastest I went on it is 24 minute mile.

That is just one idea...

When it comes to exercise...think outside the box at least until the weather warms up or the ice melts and you can get back outside!

Nice setup! Hubby did a great job on your "walking desk!"

"Walking desks" are a brilliant idea for burning calories while working on the computer or interacting with buddies on SparkPeople (and on Facebook and on Flickr, and on...) LOL!

My weight crept up fast when my office job became fully integrated with technology. Since all of the information was at our fingertips, it eliminated the need to get up and walk to file cabinets and such. Today, I spend a lot of time post-editing photographs and writing, so I find myself at the computer for hours. This would definitely add lots of extra steps to my day!

And make the electric company happy! LOL!

Yay! If only I had a treadmill (and a husband) I'd be all set! Do you think my gym would let me take one of these inside with me? They have signs specifically prohibiting cell phone use in the gym, but I'm sure the signs don't mention laptops! emoticon

BLC14 is done...What Do the Jade Dragons do for 5 weeks before BLC15 starts?

Thursday, December 09, 2010

Some of you may have notice that my picture has recently popped back up after "being" a dragon for the last 12 weeks. You may also have noticed on my page, my goals have been changed. It is because of BLC14. Which stands for "Biggest Loser Challenge" the 14 is what round they are on. BLC14 is a Team on SP. The team as broken into MANY different teams all focused on something slightly different but all having to do with supporting and encouraging one another. My team is Jade Dragons...also known as the Master of Maintenance. I made the team because I am 10 pounds away from my goal weight. Everyone on this team is in maintenance range. As maintainers we have our own challenges that are not always the same as "losers" but yet many are the same.

This team is run strictly by members of Spark. This is not a coach run team. I can't imagine the hours these men and women put into coming up with challenges and figuring the winners of the challenges and keeping track of a bunch of stuff. A BIG HUGE shout out to all of those Admin, cappies and co-cappies that have made this challenge a success over and over again!

It is very organized (or at least appears that way from outside looking in and really that is all that matters emoticon) That is something right up my ally. I love structure. I am a routine girl!
Friday-Monday is weekend Challenge
Tuesday is LCW - minute challenge
Wednesday is weigh in - you HAVE to weigh in and you have to post it. Good, bad and ugly
Thursday is TNT - Tone and Tighten. Focusing on Strength

Now you may be wondering what MY results were from the BLC14... I gained 0.2lbs. So if you know me, you know that I have been complaining for the last YEAR that I am maintaining 10 pounds over my goal weight. I had high hopes of getting my 10 pounds off during this past 12 weeks. I think I was setting my sights to high. I have a LOT going on in my life right now. I also didn't take into consideration the Holiday season. So even though my expectations were high for BLC14 I am very comfortable in saying I am proud of myself for maintaining through this challenge.

Now that BLC14 is done what will we do? Well some on the Team take the time to take a break from the structure. Some may even decide to do nothing for the next 5 weeks. Us maintainers know that that just doesn't work. Our Captain - Christy along with Mike and Nan have come up with a great 5 week challenge for us to do.

Basically, we pledge a number for each of the categories I listed above. It is broken down like this

TNT - Tone and Tighten
Pledged - Squats - Team 5000 My pledge 500 (that 100 every Thursday)
Push up - Team 4300 - My pledge 250 (50 per Thursday)
Crunches - Team 7500 - My pledge 500 (100 per Thursday)

Weekend Challenge - Miles
Team Pledged 1000 - My pledge 20miles per week or 5 miles each Friday-Sat-Sun-Monday
This one will be the hardest for me seeing that Christmas and New years will be in the middle of the challenge. I am going to do my best to ramp up and do more miles before those weekends hit.

Tuesday - LCW - Minutes
Team pledged 3500 - my pledge 200 or 40 minutes every Tuesday. Another hard one for me because most of my meetings fall on Tuesday evenings. So I need to plan it out here.

This is the first round I have participated in and I can easily say I am hooked! The people are great. The challenges are fun (most of them!)As is the case with just about anything you get out of it what you put into it. Does this sound like something you are interested in? Around 15 starts in five weeks. You have to be invited to join this team challenge. This blog is my invitation to YOU! This just maybe that extra push you need to get you to your goal!

Contact me if you are interested and I will send you the link.

Happy Holiday's everyone!

I was in the BLC14 round too. I was a Forest Green Pixie. I have to say it was my first time and right after I signed up I got super busy and couldn't log in as much as I wanted even though I completed the challenge. I am looking forward to next round and kicking some serious butt though! Great job continuing between rounds. What a way to keep it going. I agree that you should be a captain in there too!

I signed up for BLC 15 this morning- I'm so excited. I love the idea of being on a team and doing a challenge. I'm doing a team challenge right now but it's not really inspiring me. It's hard to work your butt off and watch day after day as teammates don't. I'm still working my butt off because the butt needs to go. I just want to have more fun doing it!

Beautiful blog and extremely clear to those who are unfamiliar with BLC overall and Jade Dragons specifically. Now who wouldn't want to be a part of the team, and if in maintenance or near maintenance, the Dragons. It's pretty exciting to be part of maintainer or near maintainer challenge team..I was waiting for one for a while and finally someone from another team altogether told me about the Dragons and I had to wait six weeks to even apply..and I'm sure glad I did!

Have a great holiday season! We can all the goodies in moderation with this challenge!!

Liz, you should be hired by the BLC admin for advertising purposes! Who WOULDN'T want to join after reading this blog! We do have some spots left for newcomers for round 15, maybe we should offer a referral bonus! Anyone who refers someone who becomes a member and stays for a full round gets a 1 lb advantage at the next weigh-in! ;)

I find this completely fascinating...I have educated myself in what the "normal" weight is for my body type. It has never occurred to me that other people didn't do that as well...Thoughts?

Oh and this is my 3rd Dragon Blog :-)

First thought: There is a study out there to support or refute any idea on the planet, whether reasonable or insane. I hate studies. Numbers can be skewed any way you want.

Second thought: My BMI, according to the link in the article, is 26, 1.1 points into the "overweight" category. I have to lose 7 more pounds to be in the "normal" category. Problems with that? First, like Chris said, short people often score worse than they should, and at 5'3", I am definitely short. Second, BMI doesn't measure fat to muscle ratios, or consider that muscle weighs more than fat (maybe... the jury is still out on that one. Where did I hear that? From another study.) Third, my body appears to be "happy" where it's at, or 3-4 lbs less. Too much less than that, and I look anorexic and feel like crap. So yeah, I agree with Chris, BMI is overrated.

Third thought, the study divides attitudes about weight along racial lines, which is really BS. And it also considered mostly low income women, which is also BS. Weight is really about the culture you come from, not your race or your socio-economic status. I mean, look at Marilyn Monroe. Rich, gorgeous, famous, and white. And a size 12. By today's standards, she's immense. But back then, she was considered "healthy" and "sexy." That's all about how our culture has changed since the 50s and 60s.

Right, you do know when your pants are too tight. Don't need the scale for that. Or a BMI

My thoughts? There sure are lots of confused people out there!

And... I think BMI is overrated. Body mass index does NOT measure how much fat someone is carrying around. It is strictly a height to weight comparison, and shorter people often score a lot worse than they should with BMI.

The average running back in the NFL, who is built like a Mack truck scores as overweight according to BMI, because it also doesn't measure how much of the player's body weight is actually muscle. It seems like almost everyone's BMI tells them they're at least slightly overweight, unless they look like distance runners or ballet dancers.

And... my favorite part of the article was this quote: "You know when your pants are too tight. You don't need a number to tell you that."

Unless you bought your pants too tight to begin with, it's just about the best indicator there is.

TY for sharing, Liz.

Considering how I was feeling last night and how I am feeling right now. I am very thankful that I got all my Challenges done! I have about 3/4 of a glass of water to drink and to make sure I get to bed by 11 tonight and I am set!
It seems that I am still trying to figure out if I am getting sick or not. I felt fine must of the day but the later in the evening it gets then I am feeling achy again! Blah! I have a full day tomorrow and I so don't need to be sick! My little girl has been complaining of an upset tummy half of today. It seems to be something that comes and goes. She took a couple of short naps and only ate a little bit. Hopefully she will be better tomorrow too! My little man was complaining of a headache this evening but that maybe due to other things than illness!

Anyway, tomorrow is another day and I hope that as far as me and my family goes it is a better one!

Good for you! Getting challenges done even if you don't feel good. Now, don't get sick. Take vitamin C and rest, rest, rest.

Of course, I don't have room to talk. When I get sick, I just live on drugs and keep plugging along. No rest for the weary here!

D.R.A.G.O.N. Day 1

Friday, November 19, 2010

Can you spell Dragon?? I am pretty sure I can!

I have a challenge this weekend. Today until Monday to spell Dragon every day...

Drink: 8 glasses of Water a day.
Rest: At LEAST 7 hours of sleep
Abs: 100 Crunches (at least)
Go: 30 minutes of Exercise (at least)
Own it: 1 Blog a day!
Nutrition: track all food/drink each day

So far today I have the D O N - R shouldn't be a problem since I have no reason to get up early in the morning.
the A & G emoticon not so easy. I am not feeling myself and think I maybe getting sick. So I have opted to not doing anything but sit under a blanket all afternoon/evening long.
I think I may have a shot at beating it before it really takes hold. Tonight is my shot. If I feel better in the morning DRAGON will be NO problem!
