Since this was filmed Brent has gone back into the hospital just once for an infection that they never could locate the exact place. He is back home now and still recovering but doing well.

PLEASE become an organ donor.

I watched the video... Remarkable story and a powerful reminder of how organ donations improve the quality of life for others.

This young woman was only twelve when those of us who worked with her mom celebrated the success of her operation... She is the reason I became an organ donor.

My best to Brent...

Pets, Putting me on the schedule and other random thoughts.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

I have a cat. She is old (16), she is grumpy, she is mean, she loves ONLY me. She follows me around to every room of the house. I love her like she is my own child!
I have always wanted another animal in the house. When I was first married. For a little while about 12 years ago my BFF moved in with us. She had a cat (about the same age as mine) and a dog (a Rottweiler). The cat was mean and the two never got a long. Now to say that my cat got along with a 125lb dog is not exactly right but as long as the cat didn't run in front of the dog the dog didn't pay much attention to her. Then my BFF moved out. I had my first child. We found a stray kitten and brought her home. Less than two days later my cat started to pee in my bed. Guess what? The little stray found a new home. It happened two other times in the last 10 years so we decided about 7 years ago that we couldn't get another animal until Ray (my cat) was gone.
About a year ago my SIL brought over her pet rabbit for the kids to see. Before, Ray was always very aggressive toward the other anmials that came in the house. But with the rabbit she just watched. She even laid down, didn't sleep, still watched. The same thing happened 8 months later when my SIL brought over her new kitten. Ray walked up to the carrier sniffed it and then watched the kitten. I don't think the kitten ever realized that Ray was in the room! That impressed me very much. I thought for sure Ray would bully any animal that would come into the house. Sooo that got me thinking...wouldn't it be nice to have another pet?
Fast forward to last night. On my FB page a SP friend posted a picture of a 4 year old Bassett Hound that is need of a new home. I LOVE Bassett's!

I talked to my husband (the man of reason usually). The one who usually talks me down from such ideas. He DIDN'T do it this time! He said as long as we knew what kind of pet a Bassett would make, as long as he didn't drool to much, as long as he had no known genetic things going on...maybe we could get him! WHAT! Now my mind is racing! Should I or shouldn't I? I would be the main one taking care of a dog. What would Ray do? I read a great article online about them
my.execpc.com/~rebec/buying_a_puppy.
html

I read it and still I am thinking about getting him. I contacted the lady giving him away and will call her tomorrow to set up a time for a "meeting". I have NO idea what I am going to do! sigh...

I have told Many people on SP that they should schedule their workouts and KEEP that appointment! I have said it...I have not followed it. I used to get up between 4:15 and 4:30 am FIVE mornings a week to get 45-60 minute walk on my treadmill. I got up at 7am to walk for an hour on Sunday before I went to church or started my day. NOW...I fit my workouts in when I can. Do you realize I got a whole 5 minutes in Friday-Monday??? That was 92 (girly) push-ups that is IT! So this fitting in isn't working for me so much. Anyone surprised? Nope didn't think so! Here is the "thing" in order to get up early I have to go to BED early. I haven't been sleeping so good the last couple of months. I can't sleep. Once i GET to sleep I am fine, it is the getting there that is the problem. So what I am thinking is this. Got to bed at 10pm get up at 5 am. Walk for 30 minutes. Do this for at least one week. See if I can start sleeping better with added exercise. If this works I will slowly start getting up earlier so I am back to my OLD schedule. That way, if I am doing this, first thing in the morning. My workout is already done and I don't need to worry about fitting it in at other times! Sounds easy enough right??? I sure hope so!

So my husband is off work this week. He is recovering from Hernia surgery (which is a whole blog by itself!) He thought he would be nice and have my car detailed, oil change and tires rotated. AWWW! That is the most awesome thing you can do to show you care, is do something FOR me! My heart is all soft. Well, long story short the Old Man told the oil/tire guys that there was a slow leak around the wheel weight thingy and could they fix that...well the oil/tire guys ended up RIPING the tire off the rim! Then proceeded to blame the "old" tire. They were 5 year old, top of the line (talking $650 for a set of 4 or $190 a piece), 80K mile tires that had just under 50K mile on them!!! WTF?!! So dear hubby (no good dead goes unpunished) had to take it to the FOR REAL tire guy to get a replacement! The REAL tire guy says this was neglect on the part of the oil/tire guy. So Old Man calls them and request that they pay for half of the tire. Guess what he got?? $85 in store credits! YEA like I want to take MY car back there for them to mess something else up! Well from talking to other people I hear that we are lucky to get that from this place!

Going to have a GREAT weekend. I am leaving town with 5 other ladies and getting a couple hotel rooms and a meeting room...What will we be doing you ask?? Scrap booking! From Friday afternoon until Sunday lunch! YEA! It is something we do 2 times a year...most year it is the only two times I get to scrap!

ADD - gotta love it when the boy child takes 50 minutes to change his clothes! Just when you think it is safe to get rid of the egg timer! Which is a whole different blog!

Thanks for reading!

My million year old cat that I lost earlier this year who was always mean to other animals decided to peacefully accept all newcomers once he got truly geriatric. it was like he just didn't have the time to waste hatin' on them any more. :)

I just adopted a 5 yr old dog from a rescue, and he's fabulous. I wavered on whether to get him- we'd just lost both a dog and a cat and I was considering the extra freedom not having a pet brings. But, after a month, the house was just too empty and I ran out and got a dog. He helps me keep up my fitness too, since he wants walks and play no matter how I feel.

I also volunteer at a shelter, so it is hard not to have tons of animals, but I have to remember to make sure the ones I have are happy.

Best of luck whatever you decide, a dog takes a lot of time and rearranges your schedule, but I think they're worth it!

So, did you 'meet' the 4yr old pup? We adopted our latest addition when she was 3yrs old. I wanted a dog to keep my then 'baby'pup company when 'the old man' dog passed (he was 15yrs old & in very poor health...but I didn't want to wait until he passed & feel like I was 'replacing' him, kwim?..he was the best...really...sigh~) She & my old girl tolerate each other. It has been over a yr now & I would say they are pretty good companions...but the new dog is a lot different then any dog I have ever owned.(they are all the same breed too!) She does not like to play. Esp with other dogs. She gets defensive & cowers or grumbles & backs away. I've worked with her some & she now seems to 'get it' when people try to goof off with her a bit...sometimes she'll even get excited & run around with us. So, things are improving. I kindof feel sorry for my old girl though, because she LOVES to play!!! Maybe in time?? Their personalities are very different...I would almost say the new addition has 'cat' tendancies...LOL!

Sorry, got to rambling....just curious about the pooch. ;-)

Get the puppy :) He's sooo cute and being an animal lover (my husband affectionately calls me Mrs. DooLittle) am all for pets of all kinds. We have a 120lb lab and an 8oz Yorkie that we just adopted. SOOOOOOO CUTE! :) They get along but not famously sometimes. Lab is 8yrs old, Yorkie is not a year yet. Schedule is early but I teach fitness classes at 5am twice a week so I am proof that even though sleep is little sometimes I can still become a morning person. AND I love working out in the mornings. Surprisingly I am wide awake once I get there :)

Have a fun this weekend :)

And thanks for writing! You covered a lot of ground there Liz - A 16 year old crotchety kitty, a possible (I'm thinking probable) Bassett Hound via Facebook, (cute dog!) which shows that you really CAN get anything on the web. Working your way back to 4:15 - 4:30AM daily workouts. Yikes! (I would die of shock if I tried to do any kind of workout that early!) Not sleeping, which is something I know all about, but have actually been doing better with lately. (when I'm not foolish enough to stay up too late just because I want to)

And what else? Hubby recovering from hernia surgery (ouch!) Terrible tire guys who should be boiled in their own oil,(okay, maybe that's a little extreme) and looking forward to a GREAT weekend of scrap booking(?) What do ya'll put in your scrap books? Seriously. I'd be interested to know.

Hmm... come to think of it, I did some scrap booking once. Before I threw out six years worth of Playboys, I cut out and saved every photo of every woman that I thought was really beautiful and exceptionally sexy, and put them all in a photo album. This was back before PCs and the internet, and I just couldn't bear to throw all my favorite old "girlfriends" in the trash. I guess I'm just sentimental like that... But I'm guessing your scrap booking will probably be different. In any case, hope you enjoy and have fun! :o)

Liz, that is one cute dog! And take it from someone who has a whole house full of animals. There is no such thing as a logical decision when it comes to adopting a new pet. There are also plenty of ways to compensate if your multiple pets don't get along. I'm sure whatever happens will be the right thing for you and your family.

Keeping workout appointments... hmmm... is that why I haven't been able to drag my butt of bed early enough to work out for two days now? Is that why I decided against signing up for a 7:30 am class next semester? I go through fits of sleeping poorly. My problem is opposite yours. I don't have any trouble falling asleep. Its staying asleep that causes me fits. 3 am and my eyes snap wide open emoticon sheesh, then I"m lucky to fall back to sleep by 5... just in time to get up for said workout appointment! Oh boy!

Car repair... I HATE taking my car for repairs. I never know if I'm getting ripped off. Maybe you can just use the $85 credits for oil changes. How does one screw up an oil change? Although my daughter had a screwed up oil change when the guy didn't twist the filter on straight. How stupid is that? Still... very nice of hubby to do that for you! And it is the thought that counts! emoticon

Enjoy your ladies' weekend! Scrapbooking isn't my thing, but if it gets you away for a weekend of fun, then go for it!

And my kids were always the last one out of the locker room, so I know how you feel there too!

Boy, we sure do have a lot in common!

I have a cat that likes only me too! I have thought about getting another to keep her company through the day when I am at work, but I don't know how she would take it. I have really spoiled her, so she might not like having someone else getting the attention.

Lots of new things going on since my last blog....
Thanks for all of the support I have received from you all!

September is kind of a blear to me. I don't remember a lot about the conversations that I had, I don't remember a lot of what people told me. I guess that is what high stress does to me! October is very much better thus far! I am happy to report that I have spent somewhere between 5-6 hours training the new "girls" in sales on how to do the co-worker whose out on sick leaves job! This week has been totally a catch up week for me. I am overjoyed to report that after Friday I will only be the "go to if you have questions" girl instead of the one who does it! Now I can go back to be in accounting instead of sales emoticon emoticon emoticon

On Sept 24 I walked my first half marathon! I was so very pleased with my time! I averaged a 15:12 minute mile! Pretty good for a walker! After the race the tendinitis in my foot came back...really bad! 2 weeks later I am still unable to wear my walking shoes. I can wear 4" heels, flip flops or just walk around barefoot and never have any problems but as soon as i put my lace up shoes back on the pain comes back within a couple of minutes! I have been putting off going to the doctor because I believe he is just going to tell me to do the exact thing I have been doing!

Another bit of good news (the best yet!) After 7 months of unemployment and 6 months of UNDER employment my husband has found a job in his field! We are so very happy and grateful! The only down fall is that he needed to a pre employment physical and they found a hernia and the doctor put him on a weight restriction. This job is a "desk" job but they will not let him start until the hernia has been fixed. He thinks that is a bunch of crap seeing that it is not causing him any pain and he has seen that "bump" there for a long time (he doesn't remember when he first saw it). The last 6 months he has worked at a greenhouse and he has been lifting heavy planters and birdbaths with no problems! I told him he needed to just settle down and be thankful that he HASN'T had any problems! He will be having surgery on Tuesday. The healing process will just be a matter of a week but the lifting restriction could take as much as 2-3 weeks before it is lifted. He is still trying to talk his new employer into letting him start a week after surgery. We will see I guess.

I have been very pleased with my amount of intentional exercise. I have gotten in a good amount considering my foot pain over the last two weeks. My eating on the other hand has been out of control...Don't believe me? Check out my food tracker for today. It is just the first day I have logged in over a week and I am over my calories by no small number! I keep fighting with myself about how I DESERVE that cookie because I hiked the trails today for over an hour...I DESERVE that piece of pie because I biked for 45 minutes today. Well that is just not going to get me back down to my goal weight! Sure it'll be fine if I want to stay at this weight but I can't expect to eat whatever and lose! Done with this! Like one of my SP Friends said in her blog today...I am Smart! I will turn this around and be back where I need to be soon!

Thanks for reading!

I know I said I was back last week but I'm back now...and to such good news! Oh my God, I'm so happy for you and your husband! Congratulations =) Looks like it's all working out in the long run. And with a little less stress on your plate, I bet you'll have an easier time tackling your weight and fitness goals. Good luck Lizzy, and lots of love emoticon

I am so happy your the 'go to girl' and not the 'go do it girl' now!!!! That must be such a relief in itself and then to have your husband find employment. It just goes to show, good things happen to good people :) I am sorry about your tendinitis, that sounds painful. I hope you heal up real soon. The same goes for your husband too. I wish you both all the best!!

Wow... Lizzy... some big, wonderful changes for you!

I am so glad about your job, knowing how much you hated that sales job! Looks like your company finally listened to you, and I'm happy you can now go back to what you really want to do... what a load off! And your husband too! So glad to hear he is properly employed now! The hernia... well, in this litigious society, everybody is just so worried about protecting themselves. Look at it this way... maybe it's been there a long time, but now is his chance to get rid of it, once and for all! Good luck to him in his surgery!

And your walking... I am so impressed! It takes me a good 20-25 minutes to walk a mile and after 3, I'm ready to fall over! How on earth did you keep up a 15 minute mile pace for THIRTEEN MILES! Sorry to hear about your foot though, I hope that passes quickly! Interesting that you can wear heels and other shoes, but not athletic shoes. I've been having foot pain too, and I'm exactly the opposite. Anything other than athletic shoes and I can barely walk! Heels?? Forget it!!

Please don't sweat the food. With all the stress you've been under and all these changes, you can't do it all. When things settle down you'll feel more ready to tackle the food issues, and then they will fall into place too. You'll see! Have faith! You're doing great! emoticon emoticon

Hey Liz ! emoticon on the good time with the half marathon and with your husband finding work in his field and getting the hernia looked after. He'll be thankful later when he's truly 100 percent :) Hope your foot feels better soon. I was hurting for several days after running those 4 "little" miles! Now that I'm feeling better I'm actually running again. Go figure but it makes me feel good. Plan on running a 5K, body willing, on the treadmill tomorrow (saves the knees).
Hope the emoticon continues!

Water or Coke?

Friday, October 01, 2010

WATER

#1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated.
(Likely applies to half the world population)

#2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.

#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as 3%.

#4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

#5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

#8.. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%., and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should drink every day?

COKE

#1. In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

#2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.

#3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the 'real thing' sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

#4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

#5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

#6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

#7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

#8... To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

#1 the active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.

#2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup! (the concentrate) the commercial trucks must use a hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

#3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean engines of the trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a glass of water or Coke?
