*sigh* Not happy with the other comments here. They're just not getting it.

This reminds me of people saying "Well, if you want to lose weight, then just eat less and move more!" There's a fundamental misunderstanding about the allure and pleasure of drinking among non-drinkers.

I'm fighting this fight myself, and, while I'm learning more about the problem with each passing day, I haven't found that insight yet that will give me control over the beer!

You know how, when you go very low carb the cravings for carby foods go away? Those cravings are all driven by hormones - particularly insulin. So you would think that once the cravings go away you'd be on easy street, right? Ha!

Well, there's a big difference between cravings and longings! Cravings are definitely chemical - driven by hormones. But longings are psychological, and take a whole different approach. Just because my menu takes care of all my physical needs, if the food is boring or unpalatable I'm bound to cheat at some point. It's meeting my physical needs, but not my psychological ones. Eating is SUPPOSED to be pleasant!

You can remove all the physical causes for alcohol cravings (and believe me, I'm trying to do just that!), like lowering your stress levels, eating well, getting more exercise, but that won't get rid of the longing for that wonderful feeling of relaxation (and sociability too).

So, what am I saying here?

First, ditch the guilt. Feeling bad serves only one purpose, and that's to alert you to the fact that you have a problem.

And there's the key point. When you drink it causes too much mayhem in your life, therefore it's a problem. Where there's a problem, there's more than likely a solution. You need to treat this as an ongoing project, and one that deserves at least as much attention as your exercise project. What can you do that's effective FOR YOU?

In my case, I've gotten pretty far by inventing drinking "rules" that I know I can generally stick to. Way back, my first rule was no beer before finishing dinner. Then it was no beer till after the kids were in bed. Then it was no beer until after 9:30. I limited the quantities gradually too. (LOL! I think my first quantity rule was "No more than 8 beers ever!" That should tell you how far I've come!!) There's "No drinking if you think you'll be driving within the next 2 hours." "No drinking in front of my kids' friends." "Drink water in between each alcoholic drink." Oh, the list goes on and on.

Am I saying that these are perfect solutions for you? No, not necessarily, though maybe they'll give you some ideas. I've never limited my drinking by day of the week (though I'm considering it lately) but that might be a consideration for you. And never forget that alcohol gets treated like carbs in your body even if it's metabolized differently. It sets up a vicious circle of cravings just like sugar and starch do.

So, do I have any solid answers for you? Nope. Just some leads and ideas and understanding. Keep trying different approaches until you find what works!

((((big hugs))))

My hope for you is that you will come to realize that drinking really isn't all that it is cracked up to be... Usually it gets you in more trouble than you'd care to have. I like to have the occasional margarita or long island iced tea... but I'd NEVER let alcohol interfere with my weight loss efforts.
You have made such awesome progress and worked on making some big changes. At some point, you are going to need to re-evaluate your priorities... and if maintaining your weight loss and health are important, then you need to rethink your alcohol consumption and the friends you hang with if you need to drink to be with them. I know it's time for summer bbqs and parties, but that doesn't mean that you need to drink at all of them, or get drunk, or even drink at all to have fun.
Please remember to take care of yourself and keep focused on your goals.

Thank you SOCIO you took the words right out of my mouth! As long as you keep thinking the way you are and acting it out that's exactly what you are doing. You've got to be far more positive and in control and to be blunt you're not there yet. You don't have the right mind set yet honey.
or you wouldn't let yourself give into temptation every time it presented itself. You're still making excuses and reasoning things out. And as long as you continue with this present mind set you'll never get there.
