Lessons Learned: Maintenance

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Most health improvement programs talk about "Maintenance" at the end of the journey. I can remember many times when I wondered if I would ever get to Maintenance. I am not sure I knew what I would do when I got there, but it seemed like it was the ultimate goal.

As I started with SparkPeople, I thought I would lose consistently week after week and when I didn't, I was disappointed. I was cutting back on calories and starting to exercise...The good news was: I wasn't gaining and I actually learned what Maintenance is first, for me..... By tracking my exercise and food I found out what maintained my weight and what it takes to lose. That doesn't mean it is any easier to lose, but this knowledge really helps.

So now when I am living my health improvement journey, I can say I have made it to Maintenance and my choices will determine whether I will stay there or accomplish my weight loss goals...I have a greater understanding about the gain/loss balance and all because I made it to Maintenance first...Thanks SparkPeople.

Great summary. I know that when I finally make it to where i want to go that I will need to continue to pay attention to what I eat and how I exercie or else I will go right back up, again. Your summary is right in the mark,

To lose, we have to eat fewer calories and/or exercise more. It is that simple, but somehow we make it much more complicated.

Good job. Keep at it!

Jogging progress

Saturday, July 10, 2010

My jogging progress is going very slowly. I have been "sidelined" by some very hot and humid weather. But the upside is that I have still been taking walks in the evening. My pups prefer the air conditioning too, so they haven't been very excited to go out either. This weekend we will all head for trout stream country, do some hiking by the cool streams and get the most out of a few days off. (I will take my jogging shoes too)

Greetings! I am glad to see that you are on the move! I guess at 57 I can't expect miracles overnight. Maybe you are in the same situation?? Oh well, we just keep working at it, huh? Keep up the good work. Do your walk/run, and add a few more steps of running each day.

Keep on, keeping on!

We finally got some cooler weather today after the rain. I may be able to get out in the yard tomorrow and spread some mulch. I don't like to be out when it's too hot and humid.

First Step To Jogging

Thursday, June 10, 2010

I have been thinking about jogging for awhile and haven't taken an action step, except to read about how to start a healthy jogging/running program. My friends and family will confirm that I am not exactly the gazelle-type to start this type of activity.

Last week I set a goal to drink more water. What does that have to do with jogging? My reward was a new pair of jogging/running shoes. Well, I accomplished the water goal for the week and wondered why I didn't go for an ice cream reward instead of shoes....but I followed through and got a new pair of running shoes.

Today was my first day to try out my new shoes with a slow walk-run combination program that will go over quite a few weeks (or maybe months??)

I took that first step and we'll see how it goes.

yeah, you! All that reading and getting ready certainly was an action step! Good job on the water. I am terrible in that department. I was shooting for 6 glasses, and I am running more like 4. Well, that is better than none. Glad you got the new shoes...start slow and easy. Great job!

Congratulations on taking the first step towards something you really want to do. I love that you gave yourself a cool reward for meeting a goal. Now you can think about a reward for becoming a jogger.

Water, Water Everywhere

Monday, April 26, 2010

One of my challenges is to drink 8 cups of water a day. I have consistently upped my intake to 5 or 6 cups but can't seem to make the 8 consistently. Is there any reason why I c an't drink 8 cups of water today? ---NO ---- So JUST DO IT --- ahhhh I feel better now.

I drink too much coffee, so I don't get my 8 cups of water. But at least I drink decaf coffee, black.

I make myself drink all of my water before I can have a diet soda. I love my diet coke and now use it only as a treat. I am consistently able to get at least 8-10 glasses of water in by mid afternoon. I now find that if I don't have my water I am craving it. emoticon I have also found that I am not craving the diet coke anymore.

I find that hard to do sometimes I well. I make myself have a cup or 2 as soon as I wake up. Then I sip as much as I can on my way to work (I usually set a goal for this, 2 cups by the end of my commute). I keep water at my desk at all times and make a point to have it near my computer so that I sip. It usually works and on some days is a CHORE. :-)

Practice makes better emoticon
