strength training

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

I've never been one for strength training. Ok, let's be honest, I'm not big into exercise in general. But I haven't been too adverse to hopping on a treadmill for a bit here and there, or doing belly dancing along with a dvd. But when I hear about strength training, my eyes kind of roll back in my head and I want to snore.

So, imagine my delight when, after a couple days of doing the strength training exercises that sparkpeople recommended, I found that it wasn't too bad! It's about 20 minutes 3 times a week. Ok, I can do that. I could even do that while watching Judge Judy. If I'm careful.

But the best thing? After I work through the 6 exercises and spend between 5-10 minutes doing a bit of yoga/stretching (cat/cow, downward dog, cobra, warrior), I feel completely refreshed and rejuvenated - a feeling I've rarely gotten from exercise.

I'm not going to go so far as to say that this could be addicting. But, if it does, I wouldn't be too upset.

Doing taxes = stress!!!!!!

Monday, March 15, 2010

Not only are we not getting as big a refund as we expected, we OWE a ton to the Feds. BLAH!

After finishing the taxes and paying the money owed, I felt completely stressed out. All I wanted for dinner was a Five Guys burger, with cheese AND bacon. And don't forget a large fry to go with that.

Instead, I pulled out a pound of locally raised beef from the fridge and made whole wheat spaghetti with meat sauce for dinner. I was able to have some of the slightly fatty meatiness that I wanted from the burger, but also threw a bunch of mushrooms and zucchini into the sauce and served it all with a side of oven roasted brussels sprouts, giving me lots of good veg for the night.

I've still not reached the lower end of my calories range today, so I might splurge on some ice cream tonight. But maybe I'll just make a fruit and yogurt smoothy? Either way, I feel like I've made some good choices and dealt well with a real stressor today.

First Farmer's Market of the Year for us

Saturday, March 13, 2010

On the off chance that there would be anyone out in the rain at the Kensington farmer's market, we stopped by this morning.

The pickings were slim. Very slim. But we walked away with about 5 lbs of apples and pears and a bottle of apple cider. We split a granny smith apple and an asian pear for lunch, and they were terrific.

I talked to the farmers and it was no surprise (but still sad) that nothing is in the ground yet. They said they're hoping to get things going in the greenhouses pretty soon.

Farm fresh produce can't come early enough!

I can't wait for the farmer's markets! And to plant my own veggies! I started a garden last year and learned a lot. This year will be much better!

Have a great day!
