Sarah and I walked against hunger for Connecticut Foodshare on Sunday. The temperature was 92 and humid! It was a great event. The largest single groups participating were The Harford Insurance Company workers and Muslims Against Hunger. We walked with our minister, Rev. Dick Allen. Okay, so Sarah napped in the stroller for most of it; but she woke up just in time for popsicles after the finish line! Sorry I have no pics, but I would like to encourage everyone reading this to do what they can to help out overtaxed food shelters! PEACE!

I became interested in increasing my fitness level when I was home with my newborn, getting close to 300 pounds, and had uncontrolled high blood pressure. I was 37 years old.
I started walking, and my goal was to be able to run across the street quickly to keep my newborn daughter safe from traffic. I hoped to build up to a mile, and slowly, block by block, I did. I soon added water aerobics to my routine. I started going to the gym, and used some equipment for about a half an hour at a time. My daughter was in the daycare, and I was amazed that there was a two hour limit to daycare. I wondered who would ever work out for two hours! I would peek in at the group exercise classes, and found the one that looked the best to me. In a few months, I finally took my first class, yoga. I did what I could but struggled for that 45 minutes. I never gave up. I kept trying to do more. I figured the instructors were my role models for fitness, and I would work until I could do everything they could do. Then I realized they taught two classes in a row often; so I started taking two classes in a row. Now, with a shower afterward (and did I ever need that shower) I was at the gym for 2 hours.
I was also consulting physicians during this process, and becoming very mindful to eat healthy foods in healthy portions, and teaching my growing daughter to do the same.
I lost 100 pounds and have kept it off for a few years. I became a fitness instructor. I have many certifications, including one for Turbo Kick (Turbo Jam inspired kick boxing). I teach several different classes a week and love what I do. My blood pressure is under control.
I have also expanded my spiritual program, and have found I love to do exercise in memory of people I loved and lost. I no longer have to turn to food to comfort me. I have run many 5k races, including those to benefit breast cancer research. I have held fund raisers for local food pantries and distribution centers, donating my time teaching yoga in exchange for people's donations of money or food.
I delight in my new life as a positive role model to my child!

I've been thrilled to be a member of many group exercise classes at my gym, WOW. I think its helped me enormously on my weight loss and maintenance journey. It helped me socialize with healthy adults when I was home with my daughter. I was so inspired that I became an instructor so I could give back, substitute teach for those who helped me with my goals, etc.
I showed up for a meeting at the gym last night and found out that not only I, but all group exercise teachers have been fired effective first thing this morning. My gym is doing away with all classes.
I feel fear that I will gain weight and that my blood pressure will go up again. I fear economic insecurity. I turn these fears over to The Divine, and pray for guidance.
I am grateful that I found out while there is still some summertime left, as this change will allow me more time outdoors with my daughter.
I am grateful that I have a job teaching at another gym, and thus a free membership. However, I do not like traveling 10 miles to workout, and am not overly happy with the daycare at that gym either.
I am grateful that I have the skill set to teach classes, and am confident that at least I have the ability to teach myself. I have lovely weather to walk, hike or run in, I can play at the beach or parks with my daughter, I have town pool passes so we can swim, too.
At WOW I have a membership paid until December; and I can use their cardio and weight equipment while my daughter is in their day care which I trust. Further, I have contacted the personal trainers about becoming a personal trainer. I have also requested the management sell me some of their equipment so I may better exercise at home.
While I have not traditionally been welcoming of change, I am grateful for this opportunity to embrace change.
