Food pics from kayak trip

Saturday, January 07, 2012

Here are the promised pictures from yesterday. I wish I'd taken DH's waterproof camera with me on the kayak so I could have snapped the sea lions...

Three salsas

Shrimp and fish plate

I couldn't finish it all - left most of the rice and gave 2 pieces of fish to DH and was still so full I didn't need dinner...

It always amazes me how the people in the village manage to make do with so little. No electric, no running water and very rustic conditions. Yesterday we chatted with some of the people there and were told that each family gets 1000 liters (250 gallons) of water per week. That is for everything! Drinking, washing, sanitation etc. Makes you realize how precious water is to them and how wasteful we sometimes (most times?) are.

The other interesting thing is that they choose to live there. They are educated people with degrees in marine biology and ecology with plenty of options. They want to raise their children without the outside influences of tv and computer games for as long as they can. The nearest school is in the next village (where there is electricity and water) and till they need to go to the "big" school (high school?) they can stay there. Truly remarkable people!

Shows me how lazy I am. The thought of the rustic life and added work just to get water and entertain children. Wondering if I would choose such makes me realize how lazy I am. I like our life and am grateful for it.

But I have been in places like that and their spirit and seeming peaceful lifestyle has its appeal as well. Sometimes our "conveniences" add a stress to life that makes one say, "Or am I lazy? That does sound good. I might would try it."

So maybe I'm just conflicted. emoticon

your meal looks delish ... what we take for granted. Glad to see you're enjoying the sunshine! We had -15C here so I'm enjoying the 6C temps here now - took off my down-filled coat and just wore my heavy sweater running into shops catching up with errands yesterday.

Great time kayaking

Friday, January 06, 2012

This morning we drove over to the little fishing village north of here to go kayaking. We were a group of 18 people, some on double kayaks but mostly singles. There was little wind, the sea was calm and it was warm enough for my kayak shorts and a t-shirt (covered by a bulky life jacket). We kayaked for about 2 hours and had a wonderful surprise when we rounded the point - there we several groups (schools?) of sea lions (lobos marinos) playing, fishing and sunning themselves. They were so much fun to watch, they jump out of the water like dolphins but their head is like a dog's, they love to float on their back with the fins sticking up or swim with just their head popping out of the water. They weren't afraid at all and we got as close as 10ft until some low flying pelicans startled one school and they all dove under to appear 100 ft further away.

We had an amazing morning on the water and then came back for a wonderful lunch of home made salsas and chips followed by fish, shrimp, rice and salad. Picture tomorrow!

Getting with the program

Tuesday, January 03, 2012

This morning I started with a yoga session and then met my friend for our walk. I must have had more energy than usual because she asked me to slow down a little :)

My overall gain over the Christmas holiday was less than 2 pounds and I'm getting back on track with my eating. All the treats are gone (finished or tossed) and I have a pot of turkey chili bubbling on the stove, a fridge stocked with fresh produce and healthy lean protein.

Life is good :)

Back on track

Friday, December 30, 2011

After the Christmas parties and outings with lots of food, packing on a few (5) pounds, this week has been much better. Yesterday we had locally caught flounder, spinach and new potatoes and fresh strawberries from Guadalajara with some vanilla ice cream for afters. Ok, so the ice cream wasn't on plan...

The holiday pounds are slowly melting - good food, yoga and walking is doing the trick! One more party to go - New Year's Eve and then I'll hit it hard come January :)

So glad you are enjoying the holidays and managing between parties to get on track and manage the weight. I was amazed that I did not gain much over the holidays. I flared up my Fibro and had some gain from swelling, but it dropped quickly. I tries to eat healthy for meals. It was the home baked sweets that got me. I guess I balanced the calories well as I only had about a pound of actual weight gain. I am back on track and hoping to maintain through the New Year. We can do this! Have a Happy New Year and we will kick it together as we get quickly back to a good norm.
