If you've read my previous posts, you know I love food. If you haven't, here's a little background. I have worked in the restaurant biz my whole life, and went to culinary school to boot. I'm a big foodie. I'm also a big fan of that fact the many restaurants and ready-made food companies are becoming more aware of health, and making healthier, better-for-you choices more available and yummier to eat.
I am not one of those people that can just cut out foods I like. I know my weakness lies in portion control. For some reason I think I need to eat giant amounts of things. I also love to bake, so whenever I bake a cake or anything that sits around my house.... forget about it.

Here's a few of my new faves.

Healthy Choice Greek frozen yogurt-raspberry-
Yummy!
The greek yogurt has the creaminess I crave with ice cream, that regular frozen yogurts don't usually have. Plus, it comes in a perfect 100 cal portion, so the temptation to flll your bowl more than you should is gone.

Skinny Cow Cookies and Cream Ice Cream Sandwiches
OMGosh! Amazing. I would have never believed this was only 150 calories. Totally worth it.
I only tried these because Target was having a deal-if you buy 6 lean cuisine meals you get a free pack of these. I am hooked. These will probably be in my freezer forever!

Chili's Sweet and Spicy Chicken
MMMM. This is on the lighter choices menu.
I love going out to eat, but I usually don't want to order something like this, because I feel like I am missing out on something. It is a perfect light meal. The chicken is very flavorful. You don't feel like you are missing out with this option.

Cooking and Baking substitutes
I have recently used greek yogurt to substitute cream or sour cream in mashed potatoes. Yum. The creaminess is perfect, and if you replace it for all the cream/milk it gives it a nice tang, and almost tastes like cheesy mashed. (Just make sure the pan isn't too hot when adding it, or you will curdle it. )
I have also used greek yogurt in cake mixes by replacing all or some of the oil. Unsweetened applesauce also works great for replacing the oil. I will also sometimes replace the greek yogurt for some of the egg yolks. I do not like the texture if you use only egg whites, so I will use 1 whole egg, and 2 whites, and 2 tbsp of greek yogurt or applesauce-so as to not loose any of the moisture.
If you are new to substituting, and a little sheepish about it-start small. Replace 1/2 the oil, or milk. If you like the flavor, slowly increase the amount you replace.

    For 19 years I delivered bread for a living. Guess what the one thing I don't like it bread and cakes. I now only eat wholegrain bread and only because it is good for you.

I am not sure if you are on the good side or the bad but I do wish you luck.

Workout Complete

Another mini victory for me today. I worked out and made it all the way through my Turbo Jam: Cadio Party workout without stopping and giving up. I did have to hit pause a few times, and grab some water, but I made it all the way through.
Proud of me.
I am really wanting to go buy myself a motivational outfit. At first I was thinking about my goal size (4), but now I am thinking just the next size down from where I am at. It seems a little to overwhelming trying to look at an outift that is way too small for me everyday and find motivation there, whereas one that is slightly to small might just do the trick. Have to run some errands later and I just might do this. Plus it is like it's own reward when I will be able to actually fit in it. =)
BTW I am loving being on Spark people, I have done it before, but I think this time I am here to stay. There is so much support and motivation, I find myself looking forward to working out or eating good just so I can see my progress on here.

yummy "better choice" snacks!

So when going through the grocery store I am a sucker for things that are pre-portioned for you, I know it really isn't all that much work doing it yourself all the time.... but I seem to like to cute little packages, and when I put 12 pretzels (or whatever) in a little ziplock baggie it looks like such a gyp, but when you have a fancy, cute little package, it looks like you are treating yourself. Mind over matter I guess.
Anywho.... Here are some better options than I have previously chosen, and my reviews-if anyone cares:

Blue Diamond's Oven Roasted Almonds, Chocolate Flavor-100 Calorie Bags:
Yum!
They are really good, not very sweet or salty, but just nice. Not a lot though, as with any serving of nuts it is small, but good and good for you.

Nabisco 100 Calorie Packs: HoneyMaid Delight Bars-Cheesecake:
Not for this girl. If you like Kellog's Nutri-grain bars a lot, you will like this. The flavor is off to me, and the bar is too soft. I am big on texture, and this texture does not cut it for me. So I will pass on these and not buy them again.

Ok, First of all, I am a Starbuck's-a-holic! I have been cutting way back, I was getting up to sometimes 4 or 5 times a week at worst, now I am down to about once a week. Now What I used to get was either a Grande or a Venti Caramel Frappucino, or a Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappucino, Load up with whip cream of course, and sometimes I would even get a White Mocha Frap. and Caramel syrup and Sauce! Yumm-o! Ranging anywhere from 410-580+ calories! That's dinner folks!
So, I know there are the obvious choices-skinny lattes with sf syrup, or any of the "light" frappucinos, which I am not a big fan of because I do not like the taste of sugar free stuff, I would just rather have real sugar, less often.
My new go-to drink is a grande, decaf, non-fat Caramel Macchiato! That's a mouth-ful, but oh so good. It has all the yummy, rich caramel flavor I crave but has only 190 calories. Now the calories of a legit snack, rather than a wasted meal.
If I really have the hankerin' for a frappucino, I will indulge, but I will only get a grande, no more ventis, and no whip cream.

Small Victories!

So I was looking back over the last two days.... and began to think about the "small victories" message board I was checking out a few days ago.
I went to Omaha to visit family this weekend, and completely planned on staying on track all weekend.... well I guess that didn't happen... I had to work Saturday morning, then had to pack and take care of my teething baby when I got off work, so I didn't have/make time to workout, then had a full day on Sunday and the same situation. I ate pretty decent on Saturday, out of my calorie range I am sure, but nothing crazy. Then on Sunday we had our tradition-family brunch. My mom cooked and made all the usuals: cinnamon rolls, scrambled eggs, cheesy hashbrowns, bacon, and fruit. I was proud of myself, I only took a small serving of each item, and only got seconds on fruit. That has never happened before. small victory #1!
Then in the afternoon my siblings and I went to a movie, and I passed on pop (small victory #2)-which is new for me at a movie, but I did have a small handful of m&ms, and a little handful of popcorn. Small Victory #3-not snacking through entire movie and limiting my portions.
Then my siblings all opted for chinese, and I was all ready to split 1 meal with another person since it was "dinner size portions," and they all suggest sharing 4 entrees (there were 4 of us), and my sister ordered an appetizer for everyone. Grrrr.... It was delicious, and I, of course ended up eating far more than I intended.
Oh well.... yesterday is done, and I am back on the wagon today. Praying for some will power for our trip coming up this weekend.
No weigh-in today....

    Just get back on track, it's all you can do. You will get to the point where you can say no or go way back on portions, you are already on the right track, so keep it up! Yay for small victories.

I showed up

Somedays just showing up is what counts right?! I showed up today. Here I am. I logged in for the day. I logged my food so far for the day. I will be working out shortly.
So, I can't figure this thing out. I've been eating pretty freaking good lately-great by my standards-and yet I am still hungry. Like all the time. Ravenous! Part of me is thinking.... "Well, my body says it's hungry, so FEED IT!" And when I started this thing I told myself I was not going to cut out any food that I love, not entirely, but I have been. I have been depriving myself, and now I am hungry!!! This is the part of my diet where I usually just go eat everything I am craving, and fall of the wagon and feel guilty, and forget about this whole diet thing. But not this time. I am going to treat myself to a little starbucks later-one of my favorites (minus the whip cream, and not the giant size either). And I want to treat myself to a little contraband fast food as well. Haven't decided as of yet on that last thing.
I am going to have a good day, no matter how hungry I am. I will make the best of it all. If I can just get through another day.... Think how great that bikini will look in a few months! emoticon emoticon

    The key is everything in moderation. Most fast food joints have their nutrition facts online. You should find out the least caloric treat, or one that fits in your calorie needs for the day, and treat yourself to it! Keep it up, you can do it!
