Fewer Worries?

Monday, May 03, 2010

I really wondered how my knees would hold up this weekend during the bike race. The weather was awful, cold and snowing with lots of wind. I did not push myself as hard as I could have but I was successful anyway.
This morning my knees are sore but not painful. Does that make sense to anyone else? I feel like they are healing and not being damaged further by exercising. This is really a concern for me. I don't want to have to have them replaced. I think I can start pushing myself a little harder. Just have to see how it goes I guess. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I understand exactly what you are saying. You don't want to injure/damage your knees, when you're trying to do things to make yourself healthier.

Citizens Road Race...Tour of the Gila-3rd Place

Sunday, May 02, 2010

The wind was brutal, it was spitting snow and yet twenty riders met to do the citizens road race for the Tour of the Gila. Silly me, I was one of the twenty that braved the less than desirable weather.
We had a 47 mile ride that went from 6500 feet to over 8500 feet in about 3 hours time. Yes, mostly the race is up hill. My knees hurt and still do. I could not get warm (am now) but I finished 3 overall for the women's class of 17 to infinity! I was extremely uncomfortable but I finished! WOOHOO emoticon emoticon

Way to go!!!! Glad you finally got warm! I had heard it was supposed to be bad. I am up in Farmington this weekend because I came to do the half marathon in Shiprock so missed the activities back home. Weather wasn't good here either. Yesterday there wasn't any rain or snow than goodness but there was 25-30 mph head wind the whole 13 miles that was cold! The last few miles I was dreaming of a nice hot cup of coffee. But after I got the the finish line only water had any appeal left for an hour or two, although I was well hydrated. It's a great sense of accomplishment to finish in spite of adversity isn't it!

Take a long hot bath to warm and relax those overworked muscles.

A Lifeguard!

Friday, April 30, 2010

Wow, if someone would have bet me a hundred million dollars that I would someday become a lifeguard...I would have laughed! I learned how to swim at the age of 46, sorta, because I really couldn't kick too well until the knees were fixed. The knees are fixed and I still can't kick too well and I realize that doesn't matter much because I CAN SWIM!

Last night I helped my swim coach re-certify lifeguards for the upcoming summer and I got certified as well. Me, a lifeguard....hard to believe. I will never be the strongest swimmer, nor the fastest swimmer but I realize that I CAN SWIM! I might fill in at one of the local pools some this summer.

I will get better at swimming because I love it. It is a challenge and has really helped me to overcome some fears. I have learned how to keep from panicking when I get some water instead of air, a cramp, or just get tired. A lifeguard has to be alert, dependable, a swimmer, a caring and focused person. I am a lifeguard! I CAN SWIM! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Real Age, Clausterphobia, and Other Nameless Things........

Thursday, April 29, 2010

I did the Real Age test for the third time in as many months and the general consensus is that I am 33 years old instead of my "natural" 47. Wonderful, but on some mornings like this morning I feel like I am a hundred and two. I have exercised and done my normal morning businesses, but....blah!

I was reading another blog concerning a neat trip to see family that involved a long time on a plane. I have flown numerous times. Each time it gets harder because I am so clausterphobic and about three hours into a flight I am ready to get off and go for a walk.. One must really watch that first step because it is going to be a big one! I was never clausterphobic until I ate chicken and went into anaphylatic shock. Since, I am and planes, trains, automobiles, caves, elevators are the worst, and other things of the sort...including MRI machines, headphones, virtual reality machines....really freak me out!

Tonight after water aerobics, I have to re-certify people for CPR, Lifeguarding, etc. Amazing how one can take a class and revisit the subject two years later, remember nothing and think they still know it all! I am thankful for the people that take the initiative to learn CPR and stay current. Someday the life they save may be mine!

Have a great day Spark People! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Wow! I am definitely impressed with your real age. That is certainly an accomplishment. As for being on a plane, I am not so sure I will love it or be able to fall asleep and awake refreshed in a new city....I am not sure what my real age is, but it is definitely not 33 and I do not swim nor do all the amazing things you do. Thanks the great thing about SP; I meet so many amazing people who are out there doing amazing things!!!
