Colored Clouds from Forest Fires

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Once again the forests here in Southern New Mexico are ablaze. It is already hot, super dry and incredibly windy (sustained 40+ called for today). There are fire crews from all over in Silver City today.
The following are pictures taken in my neighborhood last night. The fire is roughly 70 miles from my house as the crow flies. Enjoy the beauty and pray for rain!

The pictures are beautiful, but how horrible. I will certainly pray for rain. Normally, forest fire season for us is in August here in Minnesota. We've had an early spring, so I hope that doesn't come early too.

I am in AZ and we have 4 burning now. Not close (thank goodness) but the air is horrible. One is about 40 miles from us. Stay inside or use a mask. The particulates are hard on your lungs!

Great pics. I saw the smoke last night but didn't take any pictures from my side of town. This morning it was moving this way again but now it seems to be headed more east. Still visible over the mountains but at the moment not headed toward town like it was. Could change at any minute though as we all know.

A Ride to Cliff New Mexico on Mother's Day

Monday, May 14, 2012

Maggie and I decided that Mother's Day would be a great day for us to take our final long ride before we taper this next week. The 21st we are riding the Santa Fe Century in Santa Fe New Mexico. Maggie is seen above sporting her new Tour of the Gila Sprinters jersey.

I managed to take one picture of Maggie before she got my phone. Unfortunately, she got to take two pictures of me. Tough phone...I didn't break its' camera. LOL
We got to see a small forest fire caused by lightening. The fire is un-manned and burning just below Bear Wallow Lookout.

I know, it just looks like clouds. Not much of a fire, thankfully as the area is extremely thick with tall pines, Aspens, and other assorted vegetation.
On the ride back to town..or towards where we parked, we got to see the early afternoon clouds starting to roll in. Thunderheads can be inspiring and I realize that these clouds were dry, but they give hope for what might someday come. Enjoy!

Hope everyone had a nice Mother's Day!

    Your jerseys look really cool!

Thanks for the photos. I love seeing how different everything is out in the west. We've had drizzle for the last few days. I would totally send that your way.

Tour of The Gila 2012

Monday, May 07, 2012

The weather for this tour was wonderful It was quite warm and a little breezy but it was not rainy, snowy or windy, a massive improvement over the last couple of three years.

I raced the downtown sprint race on Saturday. It is a fantastic little sprint and I am a sprinter! I won first place for the women and was third overall.

This pictures shows the jersey for the race this year, my first place medal on the right and my "lizard bowl" trophy on the left. The bowls are one of a kind, made locally, and much coveted.

Sunday was the long road race from Camp Thunderbird on the Mimbres to the Buckhorn in Pinos Altos New Mexico. The circuit takes you around Lake Roberts and up the Sapillo..a tremendous hill climb. The race is 33 miles long and 90% of it or a little more is up hill. I am NOT a climber and consider myself lucky when I finish. I was 7th and I survived and I will compete next year as well.

This picture shows a few of the riders gathering for the Sapillo road race on Sunday.

This picture shows myself and one of my best friends, Claudia Leonard. I would like to say I am the tall, lean one on the right but I would be lying! Claudia is moving so in a way this was a bitter sweet race. I guess I will just have to make a road trip to Montana someday to go riding with her.

Silver City is a wonderful place to live but sometimes it does not offer the necessary services needed to take care of people that need just a little more help in their lives. Claudia and Bob...I will miss you!

Here's hoping that you weekend was as exciting and as active as mine! Keep on sparking Sparkers!

Congratultions on your wins!!! I am so well aware of what SIlver City doesn't offer to people who need a little more help, having worked in various senior programs since 1995. It's a little frustrating to me because they recruit people to retire here but then when they need some help there's not much for them. Sorry your friend has to move away.

A New Job!

Thursday, April 19, 2012

My husband finally got a new job today! He has been out of work basically for two years. He is going to be the Superintendent of a mine here in New Mexico. Hopefully this one last a while because we need the money, he needs a job and he is super excited.
I am getting ready for the citizens part of the Tour of the Gila. It is the first part of May. I was going to do the entire race but I would miss four days of school. Instead, I will do the citizens races which are on the weekend. At the end of May I am going to do the Santa Fe Century with a good friend. It should be a lot of fun. I hope I can finish the race....sometimes it takes a lot of self talk to talk myself into things.

I am so happy for your husband's new job! It is so hard around here to get good jobs. Good luck with the race. It's too bad you can't do the whole thing. I drove up to Lake Roberts Sunday and I'm always so amazed that people can actually ride bikes up and down those hills! Makes my leg hurt just to think about it. But we all have our different things we love and my primary thing is hiking up and down those hills LOL!

Tuscon Trip and Tattoo Expo

Monday, April 02, 2012

Hubby and I went to Tuscon this last weekend, partly to celebrate my upcoming birthday and partly to go to the tattoo convention. I have one tattoo that I have had for a number of years..a lizard leaning on a golf club with a ball teed on his tail.

I have been thinking about a new tattoo for some time. I thought of one of my biggest sources of inspiration and I came up with my little Yorkie, Spanky. This little guy has a porta shunt problem (genetic defect) AND AS A RESULT HE HAS AN ENLARGED HEART, HAS TO EAT A SPECIAL DIET. Spanky will play ball with you until he just has to stop. He loves to swim, is fiercely loyal, trusting, intelligent, and does not know the meaning of QUIT! He weighs just over three pounds and truly believes that he is the size of a pit bull. Speed, tenacity, hard-headed, yup we were made for each other.

Because Spanky is ill, when I go for a ride on the bike he has to stay home. Motion really bothers him and he wants to go with you in the car but he gets car sick. Now he is on my arm and can go with me in spirit when I go for a ride.

The tattoo artist was a gentleman from East LA. He does great on portraits and he really enjoyed doing the tat. Thanks Pewee!
