The End is Near!

Wednesday, December 07, 2011

It is almost time for Christmas vacation and a much needed break from school. Those of you that know me, know that I teach at an alternative high school for students not successful at a regular high school. Many of our students are gang members, some are drug users, teen parents, thieves,....all of them need a

Being teenagers, they are typical...meaning they think mostly about themselves and they are invincible!

They listen to music that encourages them to make unwise choices...

They party and drink too much...

They all need
someone that cares,

the ability to learn to laugh at themselves,

A high five for what is done correct and well,

Something to look forward to,

A home to go to,

And a break from play, celebrate, and live!

Lucky kids....they have someone (you) who cares about them. I'm sure many of them feel like nobody cares so what difference does it make what they do. Those kids need lots of prayers and caring and tough love. I bet you are an awesome teacher.

Hope the weather cooperates and you can get a lot of biking in during the break. So glad there are people who can look past the negatives of these kids and help them find the positives in themselves.

Stormy Weather

Monday, December 05, 2011

This morning there was definitely a "little frost on the pumpkin". I skipped the gym and chose home instead but I could not resist taking a few "chilly" pictures. The dogs enjoyed me being at home longer than usual.

Cisco loves to have his belly rubbed and Spanky, well Spanky loves to play ball and he was not too amused with me scratching Cisco, however he did survive.

As I look outside, I am glad I took pictures early. It is very overcast and dark now.

It was nice to take a little break from the gym. Tomorrow I will go to the gym come sled team or high snow! LOL Have a safe and productive day.

It Arrived With A Whisper....

Saturday, December 03, 2011

The high Desert does not get too many storms, snow storms at least. When I was a kid growing up here, we used to get three or four really deep snow storms a winter. That trend is long changed but here are pictures from the latest storm. It caused school to release early yesterday. Heavy, wet, appreciated and pretty!

We received a good 6 inches here at the house. Needless to say, Spanky and the rest of the dogs are NOT amused. Spanky loves to swim but he is tiny and deep snow rubbing his belly is not his idea of fun. Have a great weekend. Here's hoping the snow melts as once again my plans for a long bike ride have been cancelled.

I was in Albuquerque and missed it although there was still snow when I got back late yesterday on the ground. But my daughters had kept me posted. Albuquerque didn't get near what was predicted but I did have to drive through the horrible horrible winds and dust storms on Thursday afternoon going up there. Not an experience I hope to repeat ever. Worse than some of the wind storms we usually get that I've driven through. And of course crazy drivers who think they can still drive 85 mph when the visibility was really really low and some debri on the highway causing cars to veer suddenly. Your pictures look so pretty though. Another storm supposed to be moving in they say.

Little Spartacus (the chihuahua) goes about a third of the way before he starts dragging - I pick him up & stick him in my jacket for a 3d, then he'll walk the rest of the way. The fluffies, Shalako & Samurai, just love the cold (but not the wind!).

It is beautiful. I am in Northern Wisconsin, on the shore of Lake Superior, so snow here is commonplace. However, I'm excited to be in the country this year (moved this summer), and looking very forward to the winter snow. Already have dug out my cross country skis, ready to go. lol

I also have a dog that doesn't like the snow (yep, here in WI). He's a Whippet, and does NOT like to be in either rain OR snow. It's time to dig out his winter jacket and doggie boots as well. ((sighs ))

Those are beautiful. It rarely ever snows where I live in Mississippi. I'd make me enough snow cream to last me all year long if it snowed like that here!

As If I Don't Do Enough.....

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

I teach Health, General Science, Anatomy and Physiology, P.E., Advisory and next year I have to teach G.R.A.D.S-- a class for teenage parents. I am supposed to help them set goals, become better parents, choose a method of birth control, set up and help them keep their WIC appointments (a program, one of the many I DO NOT believe in), talk to them about relationships, breast feeding, teach them to be "caring" individuals.....etc. and so forth.

Since I am at an alternative high school, the superintendent is pleased with the thought as a local medical branch will pay half of my salary and give me an aide to run off papers for the class. I AM NOT happy with the prospect! How much time is it going to take to be a parent, guardian, priest, teacher, secretary, banker, jailer, loan officer and personal assistant? I do most of the stuff already because people have children and then leave them for someone else to raise. I raised my children and I DO NOT want to raise someone else's children and grand children.

I know mistakes happen but..if you have a program for every little thing that a teen does, and said program gives them a check to pay for the little problems, what is the incentive not to keep doing the same things?

I guess I am just getting cranky. I know my check keeps getting smaller and I keep getting asked to do more and more. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO tired of teaching but I am having trouble getting the last three classes I need to go forward and do something else. The holidays are coming, the husband is laid off and I need to find more time to ride!

and PLAY!

Sorry for the rant. emoticon

I've seen Teen Mom and it is *not* glamorous! The kids are always fighting with their parents about the same things kids always fight with their parents about and all of the families just look wrecked and twitchy. It isn't even shot nicely. There are plenty of shows that show off bad choices (Jersey Shore, that Kardashian show...), but that's not one of them.

I feel for you Pat. I know there isn't a whole lot of hope for the kids in your school, but I still want to think that you're making some sort of difference in someone's life... Maybe it takes a lot of effort, but...

I haven't seen the teenage pregnancy show, but I've heard of it. Sounds like they do tend to glorify being a mommy - NOT what the teens need to be thinking. Hope things get better for you soon. emoticon

I hear you and am right there with you. As a behavioral teacher in the middle school setting, I know it is no fun! I, too, am trying to finish my education to get out of the school system. The lack of self respect and respect for others among our youth is disheartening. So I have to take hold of the good moments and be proud when I do see a kid change for the better. It is hard to find positive when you the negative seems to be overflowing so richly. And don't sorry for the rant, that keeps you healthy!
May God show you a blessing you didn't see before!

I just heard something really disturbing.
My Sis lives in NYC, she is preggo in 3rd tri.
Took DS to cipentral park to play
Where she met a group of 13 yr old girls
They were so excited about pregnancy, they wanted to touch belly
My Sis was like ok....

Then they said how my Sis is soooo lucky, how they r jealous bc they want to be PREGNANT!
why? So they can WEAR cute pregnancy clothes and get all the attention and glamour!!!

My Sis was like WHAY? what do u mean, she tired to tell them it ain't all that jazz.

They were lalala... They started talking about a TV show, teen mom or something
How the girls are so lucky, glamorous on that show......

Hmmm was the show for awareness... I think epic fail! Sigh

I agree with you! Especially about not believing in WIC! It must be hard right now when you want to be doing something else, but can't. I'm sure you will get those last classes in soon and be able to move on. BTW, the love your Doxies! I have a little rescue one of my own, Missy. Have a better day!

The last three and a half weeks at school have been very, VERY difficult. I work/teach at an alternative highschool, which is a major challenge on a good day. The last weeks have seen several gang members getting out of jail and arriving in town with a set vendetta that they are h*ll bent on completing. Unfortunately, I have had seven kids stuck in the middle of the problem.

First, a student beat almost to death. He is a young father and he felt that he was protecting his girlfriend and daughter. 2 younger kids--12-15 walked by and began cursing him in front of his house. He walked out and told them to leave, probably not in those exact words. The younger guys jumped him and he preceded to whip them. Their fathers showed up and beat him severely. Of course the fathers were out on "supervised" parole?

Next several of my young ladies (possibly the wrong word to use) were dating some choice young men that decided to go on a shooting spree. The young men led the police force on a merry excursion from one side of town to the other before wrecking their automobile in someone's front yard. The driver was tazzed to get him out of the car. Again, "supervised" probation for previous offenders?

Next, another young man severely beaten. He has missed a week of school and although I hated that he got beaten so badly..the beating might have saved his life. He has not felt just right for over a week and he is really dizzy. I thought he had a head injury but after prolonged testing the doctors have decided that he has pancreatic cancer! He is only 19!

Lastly, I hope for a while at least, a previous student was shot and killed by a 31 year old guy over a fight about changing clothes in a bathroom. The gunman even shot his own girlfriend and her cousin that was trying to help her. Sweet dude, and yes he is on "supervised" probation from the Northern part of the state?

I can't help but think that the District Attorneys need to take a closer look at what is going on. If someone has several battery charges against them, is a known felon, and has gun/weapon charges pending, how in the H*LL do they get out on probation? If I was in that predicament, I think they would throw away the key! I have a neighbor that does not like the fact that I carry a pistol (outside of city limits) when I go out to walk my three little dogs. I believe that she is going to have to get over it. Maybe the "old West" is not a term of the past afterall.

Snowball fights are safer and provide a better family atmosphere!

I so agree with you and am so frustrated with these people out on the streets to do it all over again. I'm so sorry that some of the victims are your students. Some of this stuff happened right by where I live. I've lived in this neighborhood for 3 years and it's been quiet till some of these punks hit the streets again lately. I hope things get better for your students and you, and for our whole community.

So sorry. I don't understand the gang mentality, why can't people just be civilized and not kill everything they come in contact with. Mayhaps these thugs would do well with a stint in Afghanistan where the people they dealing with have been trained to deal with them. I feel they would find they are not so tough when confronted with a terrorist trained to make people cease to be upright and partaking of nutrients.

I worked in a similar environment for years. I had to deal with a kid making trouble in my classroom and eventually informed him that if he did not stop he would be suspended from the school program.

Later his counsellor said to me, "Oh you shouldn't have confronted him, Calos carries a gun!"

Hmmm 18 year old who typically caries a gun, co-worker who knows but does not deal with this, nor inform staff. Yeah sometimes it is just a little weird.
