It is almost time for Christmas vacation and a much needed break from school. Those of you that know me, know that I teach at an alternative high school for students not successful at a regular high school. Many of our students are gang members, some are drug users, teen parents, thieves,....all of them need a
Being teenagers, they are typical...meaning they think mostly about themselves and they are invincible!
They listen to music that encourages them to make unwise choices...
They party and drink too much...
They all need
someone that cares,
the ability to learn to laugh at themselves,
A high five for what is done correct and well,
Something to look forward to,
A home to go to,
And a break from school...to play, celebrate, and live!

I teach Health, General Science, Anatomy and Physiology, P.E., Advisory and next year I have to teach G.R.A.D.S-- a class for teenage parents. I am supposed to help them set goals, become better parents, choose a method of birth control, set up and help them keep their WIC appointments (a program, one of the many I DO NOT believe in), talk to them about relationships, breast feeding, teach them to be "caring" individuals.....etc. and so forth.
Since I am at an alternative high school, the superintendent is pleased with the thought as a local medical branch will pay half of my salary and give me an aide to run off papers for the class. I AM NOT happy with the prospect! How much time is it going to take to be a parent, guardian, priest, teacher, secretary, banker, jailer, loan officer and personal assistant? I do most of the stuff already because people have children and then leave them for someone else to raise. I raised my children and I DO NOT want to raise someone else's children and grand children.
I know mistakes happen but..if you have a program for every little thing that a teen does, and said program gives them a check to pay for the little problems, what is the incentive not to keep doing the same things?
I guess I am just getting cranky. I know my check keeps getting smaller and I keep getting asked to do more and more. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOO tired of teaching but I am having trouble getting the last three classes I need to go forward and do something else. The holidays are coming, the husband is laid off and I need to find more time to ride!
Sorry for the rant.

The last three and a half weeks at school have been very, VERY difficult. I work/teach at an alternative highschool, which is a major challenge on a good day. The last weeks have seen several gang members getting out of jail and arriving in town with a set vendetta that they are h*ll bent on completing. Unfortunately, I have had seven kids stuck in the middle of the problem.
First, a student beat almost to death. He is a young father and he felt that he was protecting his girlfriend and daughter. 2 younger kids--12-15 walked by and began cursing him in front of his house. He walked out and told them to leave, probably not in those exact words. The younger guys jumped him and he preceded to whip them. Their fathers showed up and beat him severely. Of course the fathers were out on "supervised" parole?
Next several of my young ladies (possibly the wrong word to use) were dating some choice young men that decided to go on a shooting spree. The young men led the police force on a merry excursion from one side of town to the other before wrecking their automobile in someone's front yard. The driver was tazzed to get him out of the car. Again, "supervised" probation for previous offenders?
Next, another young man severely beaten. He has missed a week of school and although I hated that he got beaten so badly..the beating might have saved his life. He has not felt just right for over a week and he is really dizzy. I thought he had a head injury but after prolonged testing the doctors have decided that he has pancreatic cancer! He is only 19!
Lastly, I hope for a while at least, a previous student was shot and killed by a 31 year old guy over a fight about changing clothes in a bathroom. The gunman even shot his own girlfriend and her cousin that was trying to help her. Sweet dude, and yes he is on "supervised" probation from the Northern part of the state?
I can't help but think that the District Attorneys need to take a closer look at what is going on. If someone has several battery charges against them, is a known felon, and has gun/weapon charges pending, how in the H*LL do they get out on probation? If I was in that predicament, I think they would throw away the key! I have a neighbor that does not like the fact that I carry a pistol (outside of city limits) when I go out to walk my three little dogs. I believe that she is going to have to get over it. Maybe the "old West" is not a term of the past afterall.
Snowball fights are safer and provide a better family atmosphere!
