Another Fire!

Sunday, May 08, 2011

The weather this last week has been very nice. The wind has calmed down until late evening and the temperatures have soared as much as my riding. I really should have no complaints and in fact I only have one. IS IT EVER GOING TO RAIN HERE? we are so parched. New Mexico is in a drought stage and has been for the last five years. The following pictures show an occurrence that is becoming very common place.

Pray for rain and the return of our firefighters. Our local Hot Shot crew is in Florida and the other local Hot Shot crews are fighting a fire that is over 22 thousand acres north of Silver City near the Cliff Dwellings.

Be safe, and everyone have a Happy Mother's Day!

Oh Pat that's so sad. Wouldn't it be nice if they had a way of transporting the flood water of the South to your area to saturate your land? I'm praying you and your area. I believe in miracles.

Prayers coming your way! We live in the beetle-infested area of CO where hundreds of thousands of trees were killed by beetles during our drought. I understand your very real fear of wild fire. My son is also a volunteer fire fighter...so prayers are also coming for your firefighters' safety and RAIN....lots of RAIN. Take care.

That is so unreal when you see the conditions you have there and the flooding going on in other areas. Stay safe - and hope there is nothing too close to you. Happy Mother's day!

I don't ever remember having as many fires so close to us as this year. Especially those that have been really close or in town. We really need some serious moisture.

Bummer, Pat. It's a problem here in some parts of Colorado as well (lack of rain, too much wind and the fires go like crazy when they start).

Praying for some rain for both of us!

Hope you have a good Mother's Day, too!

Tour of the Gila...Pat's Recap

Sunday, May 01, 2011

Today concluded the 2011 addition of the Tour of the Gila. The Citizens race today started at Camp Thunderbird on the Mimbres. The race concluded at Pinos Altos, New Mexico...thirty three miles later. The race started in thirty-two degree, calm weather and ended in the mid 50's with a breeze. All in all not a bad day weather-wise.

Yesterday, the criterium took place in downtown Silver City. Fans got to watch all of the professional racers as well as a citizens race and a race for just about every age group imaginable for children. I had a VERY good sprint race! I was the only female that decided to participate so I had to ride with the males ages 35+. I was the first place female and the 3rd place male. I managed to beat 5 male riders..so it was a great race.

Todays race, well sometimes you have good days, sometimes you have bad days, and then there are days such as mine today. I finished the race. I was not last nor was I first. Four miles into the race my hips began bothering me again. The muscles in my lower back, butt and legs proceeded to get so tight that I was extremely miserable. I kinda didn't know whether to ride, quit, cry, curse, etc. I did everything but quit.

So tonight, I am sitting on a heating pad. I have bruises down both legs where the muscles tightened up and I have a great picture to share of this years Tour of the Gila bike jersey as well as the handmade bowl and the gold medal I won at the downtown criterium. Yup, had a good time, but I have had better. There is always next year!

Glad you had such a great race on Saturday, and sorry you had such a rough time on Sunday. I know how that goes. You described how I felt this year at the Bataan Death March Memorial. We have those good days and those not so good days for sure. But I still think it's so awesome that you are able to climb those hills around there on a bike! I've always been so amazed that anyone can do that.

Congrats on the finishes, Pat -- you rock! I cannot imagine bruises from muscles tightening up -- you must have been in a LOT of pain, poor girl. Hope you're feeling better today and figure out what the issue is. I assume you've had your bike fit to you so everything is aligned properly...if that's not it, not sure what it would be. Well, except exhaustion perhaps. You do work out a lot and maybe your body was just tired that day. Like you said, we have good days and "I'll be happy to just finish" days." Regardless of how you finish, you rock!

Bike Race and Roaring Winds...

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

For the pro riders, the Tour of the Gila starts tomorrow and the wind continues to blow ever stronger. Several roads in the area were closed because of blowing dust and lask of visibility. Winds can be tough to handle in a car and quite dangerous for a cyclist.

The Gila Monster part of the race begins tomorrow morning. It goes 90+ miles from 7500 feet to 12 thousand plus feet, from Silver City to Mogollon, New Mexico. I hope the winds will start calming down. There are several places on tomorrow's race that the wind could make the riding not only miserable but dangerous as well.

We need rain and four days of calm weather. At this point, the wind can keep blowing as long as we get some rain. If wishes were fishes we'd all have a fry! Here's wishing!

And Now the Taper!

Sunday, April 24, 2011

The Tour of the Gila starts this coming week. I am going to do the citizen races because I don't want to take another week off of school. I rode 120 miles this weekend so this coming week I will ride no more than about an hour all together.

I hate to taper but I will still swim and lift weights and do some jogging. I have got to keep doing some exercise or I get so stiff that I won't be able to move. Keep praying that the wind will die down. I has been whipping for a week. Sure makes cycling difficult.

Have a great week everyone!

Blessed Are the Healing Hands

Thursday, April 21, 2011

Blessed are the healing hands of my massage therapist. Once again I feel like I can walk and move and sit and sleep pain free. At least a night would be so tremendous. I did get the new bed and I have slept a little this last week BUT...I am sleepy and a tad cranky and I am getting sore from the massage.

I had some very distinctive knots in the quads, hammies and booty. Maggie worked the majority of them out. I am sitting and I can still feel my lower legs and my hips are not falling off. This is a definite improvement!

Hope everyone has a great, safe and active Easter!
