Mesilla Valley Triathlon

Monday, April 04, 2011

On Sunday the third of April I celebrated my birthday by competing in the Mesilla Valley Triathlon in Las Cruces New Mexico. My daughter and I decided to go to Cruces on Saturday and the weather was absolutely gorgeous! Calm, sunny and 90 degrees.
We went to dinner at Olive Garden and we put a severe hurt on the all you can eat bread sticks and tossed salad. I had some pasta as did she and we watched Butler beat VCU. Then if was off to the Mall where I bought a new pair of running shoes and she bought a couple of blouses at Rue 21. We stopped by Caliches where I had a blueberry milkshake and she had a mud pie deal with a gummy worm in it. Good thing I was competing the next morning cuz I ate like a gazillion calories, I am sure!
Off to the movies. We went and saw Rango, a western cartoon spoof. It was hilarious and I highly recommend it. It has some great adult humor that the little kids do not catch. Too cute! We then went and picked up my packet and there was a cute young man that flirted with the daughter. Afterwards, she decided that perhaps she would start training a little and perhaps do a triathlon, first as a relay with me and then by herself. I hope so but the minds of teens are fickle and easily changed.
The race started at 9am. At the end of the 5K run, I was last and behind the closest runner by 5 minutes according to my daughter. I told her not to worry that I would catch them. The daughter looked slightly skeptical and said she hoped so cuz so far it was kinda embarrassing (fickle minds). So off I went and in came the wind. It was supposed to get very windy and it did. 26 K bike and the first half I averaged 21 miles per hour. I made the turn around and was about half a mile behind the second place Athena and two miles behind the first place Athena. I could have been extremely pumped but........I was now riding into a thirty mile per hour head wind! It was draining to say the least and not good for competitive me at all. I had passed 11 people so far on the bike and I was driven and I managed to pass the people I was after.
I entered the pool in first place for the Athena division. I swam the first 50 meters lap and realized I was very tired and extremely thirsty. I was half way through the second fifty meters when I swallowed and my throat was so dry that I started gagging. Not fun when swimming but I made it to the wall where I had to hang out for a couple of minutes to get the throat and asthma under control.
I got passed by several people, including the two Athenas that I had chased down on the bike. emoticon I ended up in third place, out of 8 and I kicked myself for a few minutes and then I was over it.
To come from last by five minutes to first into the pool by 4 minutes.....priceless! To lose by 3 minutes and seven minutes in a discipline I have managed to do for just a month over a year.....definitely something I can live with. I went, I competed, and I placed third. I am happy and proud of myself. Swimming is something I can work on. I improved the run portion by 5 minutes, and I don't usually have to fight a fierce head wind! time the "prey" won't be so lucky! emoticon
Tomorrow I hope to include some pictures. Hope you all had an active and safe weekend.

Congrats! And, I'm impressed with you bicycling! I am averaging only about 14 mph and am thrilled when I hit 17 or 19 for even awhile! You'd be passing me!!!

My first tri is this weekend. I'm so nervous... and excited! I hope I do as well, and have as much fun, as you do!

Congratulations on the race! Yep, those winds really suck the energy out of you. You really did well making up your time in spite of the winds. If it wasn't for the coughing episode you you would have really smashed it but life happens sometimes. You did so awesome.
I heard the road from here to Deming was closed for a while Sunday afternoon. Did you have any trouble getting home?

Busy Week Coming and Gone

Saturday, March 26, 2011

Last week left me reeling. I survived both teaching, observing and a less than happy visit with my doctor. Last weekend was at least fun. My family went on a picnic, dogs too. We all walked, ate too much and I picked up a bunch of aluminum cans. I get tired of seeing all the cans from the lazy individuals that think it is their right to drink and drive and hurl their trash out the window for others to pick up. Perhaps I can sit by the road..covert operation style..and wait for someone to throw a can. I could immediately pick it up and throw it back at them. I bet I could get their attention.

Monday this week, I teach at the high school until 2:35 and then go to the university and teach a class from 3 to 4pm. I will go to the doctor at 4 so we can discuss my new cholesterol medication that is making me miserable and my thyroid which according to the blood test is not working right and teach another class..water aerobics from 5:30 to 6:45. Then I have to go home and pack.

Tuesday morning I am leaving early to drive to a health conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It starts at three pm and continues again on Wednesday until 4pm. I have to drive home (4hours) and get ready for Thursday.

Thursday morning I will go to the gym at 4:30 am and then to swim at 6am. I then teach at the high school and then I have my observation time at the physical therapists. I will have time after work to go on a short bike ride to blow out the pipes a tad since we are doing daylight savings.

Friday---school, classes at the college and more observation hours and then home to pack. I am going to Las Cruces (2hour drive) for a triathlon. I decided a triathlon on my birthday was just too good to pass up.

Sunday, back home to collapse and get ready for the coming week. I may get used to my schedule if I live through it. LOL.

Hope everyone has a wonderful week. If I don't check in much...I am probably just sleeping. In other words, don't take it personally.

Love this "Spooky Old Tree" named after a neat kids book I always had to find time to read to my kids when they were younger.

What a busy week you have planned!

I, too, love the idea of throwing the cans back at the cars. Here's a similar story - I work in a pretty small office/plant. One fellow would come in every day and throw his coffee cup out the window in to the culvert at the back of the shop (work property)! Finally, one of the other fellows gathered up all the cups from the ditch (around 20 or 30) and put them back in the throwers car!!!! Sweet!

I smile every time I think about that one!!!

Wow, you have had a very busy week. And I love your idea with the cans. Sometimes I feel like doing that with all the trash left on the side of the roads.
Thank you for helping to keep our land looking much better.

Long Ride, etc.

Saturday, March 19, 2011

Went on a 60 miler today. The weather was a little breezy but since I was in the mountains it was not too bad. I did not take any pictures because I rode as hard and as fast as I could. I even spent a great deal of time standing and pedaling....something I usually do not do. I am frustrated with my knees and I have decided that I am going to make the muscles of my legs even stronger and then my knees will have nothing to complain about but themselves!

I am really enjoying my observation hours at the physical therapist. It is a welcome change of pace. I am truly amazed at the skill and caring found in this special clinic. Lucky patients!

Going on a picnic with the family tomorrow. I plan on doing a little hiking if I am not too sore!
Have a safe, healthy and active Sunday!

60 miles is incredible! I did my first 20 miler two weekends ago...just by myself. I've yet to do a group ride yet. I'm looking at my first group ride (well, besides my tri this weekend) later this month. I think I'll try the 30 miles! I'm actually starting to dream of a big bike ride this fall - it is 75 miles on Saturday & 75 on Sunday. But, in the meantime, I'm training for 2 tris, 1 Half Marathon (in the next 9 weeks), and who knows what else before then! We'll see what happens!

Love reading about your adventures!

Enjoy your picnic and your hiking! I'm really thinking of hiking up Signal Peak today. Up the trail and then down the road. That will give me a workout but not as strenuous as your workouts!

Hi! A 60 miler, Wow! I think that is just awesome. I have not joined a biking team yet, but have thought it would be lots of fun. I used to do a spin class and loved it. Hope it goes well for you. And having picnic sounds like fun. Our family bbq'd this evening for dinner. I marinated some steak and chicken this afternoon, while I watched my youngest son play baseball. At the end of each inning, I would walk around the outside of the fenced field. By the end of the game I had walked two miles and never missed a play!. Enjoy the weekend.

Lazy Day?

Monday, March 14, 2011

I actually exercised for 360 minutes but it felt like I did not do much. I did an awful lot of stretching. I have a hip and a hamstring that are really cranky at the moment. Hopefully, a little swimming tomorrow morning will help and then I teach water aerobics tomorrow evening.

I think it was a lazy day but I am sure it will be a busy week! Be safe, happy and active.
