On Sunday the third of April I celebrated my birthday by competing in the Mesilla Valley Triathlon in Las Cruces New Mexico. My daughter and I decided to go to Cruces on Saturday and the weather was absolutely gorgeous! Calm, sunny and 90 degrees.
We went to dinner at Olive Garden and we put a severe hurt on the all you can eat bread sticks and tossed salad. I had some pasta as did she and we watched Butler beat VCU. Then if was off to the Mall where I bought a new pair of running shoes and she bought a couple of blouses at Rue 21. We stopped by Caliches where I had a blueberry milkshake and she had a mud pie deal with a gummy worm in it. Good thing I was competing the next morning cuz I ate like a gazillion calories, I am sure!
Off to the movies. We went and saw Rango, a western cartoon spoof. It was hilarious and I highly recommend it. It has some great adult humor that the little kids do not catch. Too cute! We then went and picked up my packet and there was a cute young man that flirted with the daughter. Afterwards, she decided that perhaps she would start training a little and perhaps do a triathlon, first as a relay with me and then by herself. I hope so but the minds of teens are fickle and easily changed.
The race started at 9am. At the end of the 5K run, I was last and behind the closest runner by 5 minutes according to my daughter. I told her not to worry that I would catch them. The daughter looked slightly skeptical and said she hoped so cuz so far it was kinda embarrassing (fickle minds). So off I went and in came the wind. It was supposed to get very windy and it did. 26 K bike and the first half I averaged 21 miles per hour. I made the turn around and was about half a mile behind the second place Athena and two miles behind the first place Athena. I could have been extremely pumped but........I was now riding into a thirty mile per hour head wind! It was draining to say the least and not good for competitive me at all. I had passed 11 people so far on the bike and I was driven and I managed to pass the people I was after.
I entered the pool in first place for the Athena division. I swam the first 50 meters lap and realized I was very tired and extremely thirsty. I was half way through the second fifty meters when I swallowed and my throat was so dry that I started gagging. Not fun when swimming but I made it to the wall where I had to hang out for a couple of minutes to get the throat and asthma under control.
I got passed by several people, including the two Athenas that I had chased down on the bike. I ended up in third place, out of 8 and I kicked myself for a few minutes and then I was over it.
To come from last by five minutes to first into the pool by 4 minutes.....priceless! To lose by 3 minutes and seven minutes in a discipline I have managed to do for just a month over a year.....definitely something I can live with. I went, I competed, and I placed third. I am happy and proud of myself. Swimming is something I can work on. I improved the run portion by 5 minutes, and I don't usually have to fight a fierce head wind! Yup...next time the "prey" won't be so lucky!
Tomorrow I hope to include some pictures. Hope you all had an active and safe weekend.
