Polar Bear Triathlon Results

I am a little late with this blog but I guess late is better than never. A little busy at school and work as finals are here, grades have to be turned in, etc. Plus, I forgot to take a camera and I did not charge my cell phone so I have no pictures!
The Triathlon was held Saturday the 4th of December at White Sands. It is part of the Southwest Challenge Series and the race is well prepared for, well run, and just overall a delightful event. The weather cooperated as the temperature was in the low 60's and the wind waited until late afternoon to blow.
I did the event as a relay and I was a blast! There however was only one athena so had I done it as an individual and finished....I would have done well also. Bob ran the 5 mile portion in 29 minutes. I did the bike one hour and thirteen minutes. I was the 4th female cyclist to pass the line and this made my day. Another local "Hero", Dorothy did the race as well. She won her age division, was second overall for females and finally passed me on the bike in the last two miles. The exciting thing for me: She passed me but she never got more than about 300 yrds. in front of me. She is an awesome ironman I am pleased with my performance. I need to ride my bike more because changing the crankset has definitely changed the way I ride and I have some work to do. Claudia swam well...about 30 seconds behind Dorothy and as a whole...Silver City, New Mexico was more than well represented.
I got to see a lady that I graduated with 30 years ago. She was a tremendous runner and she still is. Our team placed fifth behind 3 collegiate teams and we had the fastest Master's time. Not bad since our combined ages are well over a fact it is, I will not tell! LOL

I have my first sprint tri in 6 months, and I don't really know how to swim properly. I have been swimming with a snorkel until I feel fit enough to benefit from swim lessons, where hopefully I'll finally master this breathing business.

You and your team are so darn speedy! It's raising my expectations for myself... tomorrow, we work harder.

    Wow! Well done! I am looking at a new bike (I have been using an old, cheap (very cheap from Walmart, LOL) mountain bike. What would you suggest? There are no mountains where I live, not even hills! and I only bike on roads.

Effort.......My Rant!

Effort is a special word. It is easy to spell, relatively easy to define, yet it is hard to convey the meaning to so many people. I spend a great amount of time on this site reading people's blogs and questions and it never ceases to amaze me how people overlook the word "effort".
We live in a quick fix society. No time to cook...grab fast food. No time to on the computer. No time to write checks to pay them on the computer. No time to__________...I am sure you can find a gadget, person, etc. that will instantly take care of your problem. We have a convenient society and we abuse it mightily!

We spend years fighting weight problems, incorrectly and therefore we just keep adding on weight. Gimmicks, fads, pills, drinks,--you name it we try it and to no avail. We DO NOT become overweight over-night, but we are going to fix the problem in mere months! I admire people that suddenly decide that they need to drop 30 pounds for a wedding, graduation, reunion, etc. I am glad they are motivated to finally start...but to lose 2.5 or three pounds a week, steadily for 10 or 12 weeks? Lucky people! I guess they have never experienced a plateau and bless those that have not figured out that just restricting calories with a 5 minute walk twice a week is NOT going to get the results they want.
We eat too much and we exercise too little. I find this to be the cold, hard truth. Eating a salad is wonderful but if you add bacon bits, croutons, cheese, and dressing to the point you are having a little salad with your Ranch....NOT going to work! Eat 1300 calories everyday of the week and wonder why you cheat on the weekend?
Effort comes into play. If you truly want to lose weight and keep it off then you are going to have to make an effort, and not just a little effort. Effort is going to have to become your main "WORD of the Day" and it is going to enable you develop healthy habits.
It takes effort to log and change your diet. It takes effort to stick to it and not to continuously cheat. It takes effort to find time to exercise everyday and then it takes effort to actually do the exercise. It takes effort to make healthy decisions and to keep yourself away from situations that are unhealthy. Effort, Effort, Effort...there is just no way around it. If you do not like to exercise, be prepared to not lose all of the weight you would like to lose. It takes effort to find something you like to do and yes, it takes effort to do whatever it is you have decided you like to do.
Don't give up! I realize that many people are struggling to eat right and to exercise, making an effort to change their life-styles to become healthy, happier individuals. If exercise is hard for what you can and practice a plus one attitude. If you struggle to get 10000 steps per day....add just one step a day. If you lift, run, cycle...whatever it is you do....add just one rep, one second, one mile...everyday. You are making the effort. It will pay off, but it will not happen over night!
I have been criticized lately for the amount of effort I put into exercising and eating right. I feel sorry for those that do not understand the amount of effort it takes me to keep my weight where it is. As far as exercise goes....I love it! It IS NOT easy for me....but I keep making the effort. Join me, will you?

    GREAT BLOG post! Baby steps. I tell people ALL the time, just take baby steps. You'll get momentum going. I love the + one. I totally do that, but hadn't called it anything.

You're right, it definitely takes effort to get it off and keep it off. But it takes effort to be heavy, too. And in fact, I would argue it takes MORE effort to be heavy. It's hard, hard on a body, and it's hard on a heart, a head, and a life, too.

Kudos for you on your effort, and for making an effort to stand up and explain the kind of effort it takes to lose the weight.

    Dear are absolutely amazing. Anyone who critizises you it probably jealous of what you can accomplish, and have accomplished and so I say ignore them. It's amazing to lose that much weight and keep it off and exercise the way you do. You are a great motivator and this is a really fantastic blog.

    Love your blog! It does take effort! I like the word lazy too because that has been my mojo lately but I'm making an effort today. Hey I was going to ask you as well, any pointers on swimming? As you may or may not know swimming is my least favorite event of triathlons but I need to put some "effort" so that I'm not last out of the water. I'm planning on doing a 1/2 Ironman next fall and would like to get stronger!

    Yes! I used to just roll my eyes at the "lose a kazillion pounds in two hours!!!!" magazine covers, but since I joined Spark, I've realized how much they're flat out lying. It takes work to take good care of your body -- there's no way around it.

I hope the people who are criticizing you aren't people who are close to you. Keep going!

    Yes, yes, yes! You said it well! Earlier this year I was one of the people you wrote about in this blog. It wasn't until I started reading the blogs of some pretty serious "fitness warriors" (Note: YOU are one of them!) that I figured out I needed to put forth more Effort. That helped me break through my early plateau and get my butt moving! Now I am addicted to exercise. I love how I feel when I work out. I love the energy I have to live my life, and I am almost to goal. I owe many thanks to Sparkers like you for telling it how it is and setting a good example. Thanks for being that, Pat. I am grateful we have crossed paths on this site.

I am hoping everyone had a nice holiday or a great week if you don't celebrate the holiday. Mine was very nice!
Got really cold here under a crystal clear sky. We were 13 degrees last night, so I waited until this afternoon to go for a ride. I had a friend go with me and we had a nice ride. Could have been a little warmer but at least the wind did not blow.

    Brrr - you're tough. I bundled up in an undershirt, sweatshirt, jacket vest, and puffy jacket with a long scarf over my ear and a hat, oh, and gloves - and I was still cold walking the pups @ 40 degrees last evening. They loved it, tho.

In a Mysterious Way and Dinner

Those of you that read my blogs know that a month or two ago I did the Elephant Man Triathlon as a relay with a couple of good friends.

You also know that my upcoming triathlon (Dec. 4) has caused me some trepidation as my knees have bothered me a little and I am also currently battling a major muscle knot in my hamstring. This muscle knot has been around for roughly three years as the muscle was trying to stabilize my knee joint. My massage therapist, physical therapist and doctor have the bad boy on the run. I am stretching and using a foam roller...PAINFUL....and many tears are being shed but I am starting to feel better. I was/am/was very nervous about the run portion of the Polar Bear Tri because it is five miles instead of a 5K and I don't feel up to a 5 miler yet.
The "Competitive Pat" tells it. You might be uncomfortable but you will survive. The "Safe Pat" tells me to take a chill, that there will be other tris and you don't HAVE to do this one. The "Tightwad Pat" says OMG you already paid for the tri...lots of money for only a t-shirt......
Out of the blue today I received a call that really lets me know the lord does indeed work in mysterious ways. Claudia called and said that she is injured and can't run or race-walk at this time. She wanted to know if I might be interested in doing the triathlon as a relay! I took all of a half of a tenth of a second to say YES!!!! It is so nice to have fantastic friends. I will get to do the cycling. Bob (Claudia's hubby) will run for us and Claudia will swim. Whew...a load off my mind. We all get to participate in a competition and friendship while we heal from that that ails us. We will compete separately later this year (next) no doubt. I certainly do not wish any ills on Claudia but it appears that her injury, albeit a chronic condition, is a life-saver at this point. We even get some money back as a relay is cheaper than an individual...LOL!
Now for dinner tonight. Food ideas I rarely share but this is a keeper that is quick, cost effective, workable---meaning several different types of meat can be used if desired. Here is a picture and the ingredients.

I used:
2 pork loin chops, diced and very lean. I boiled them for three minutes once diced and drained and rinsed them
1 red bell pepper
2 yellow squashes thin sliced---not too thin
A handful of sliced cherry tomatoes
1 cup of fresh spinach I chopped up
1/4 cup of Kraft Sundried Tomato Vinaigrette
I put the vinaigrette in a skillet and added the diced pork (chicken, etc. would work) and covered it..on med. heat while I sliced the veggies of choice. This also allowed for the pork to be completely cooked.
I added the rest of the veggies and about 2 Tbsp of water and covered and steamed until all the veggies were just tender. Delightful and quite tasty. I washed it down with Cranberry/pomegranate iced tea and a little slice of pumpkin pie.

One of Those Days...

Ever have one of those days when:

I think we all have these days and sometimes these types of weeks. It is called life and though I may grump, grouch and grumble...I wouldn't trade it for all the nuts in the forest!

Here's hoping everyone has a fantastic weekend complete with a little "me" time!
