I got the nicest post on my facebook today-
"thank You for telling me about sparkpeople.com . It's a great site! Yesterday my family went walking/ jogging. This is a journey for me and I will drop these remaining 80 pounds!! I don't think we realize how life changing conversations ca...n be. Please know that You made a huge impact on my family!! : )"

This all came about because of a casual conversation at work. I know I get excited about this site and lifestyle changes because of what a difference it has made in my life. It's so cool to see the ''spark" spread.

Swim, bike, run...my first sprint triathlon

I finished. Mission accomplished...
I signed up for a sprint tri last October which became a run, bike, run -the ocean wasn't safe for swimming because of a hurricane. I finished it, but because I didn't swim it didn't feel like I had really finished a tri-athlon.
When I woke up and was driving to the race in thick fog- I was a bit nervous. I couldn't see the buoys from shore and was worried. Thankfully, most of the fog burned off before the race...
I was surprised by the adrenaline rush...and the open water swim in murky water. I started waaay too fast and after a short way got nervous, gulped water, couldn't touch bottom and panicked. It took me about 1/3 of the way swimming backstroke to finally catch my breath. It sooo different than the nice meditative lap swim I have been doing to train.
The bike ride was nice. Again, the stationary bike I trained on doesn't have the draft of swimming against the wind...but the sun was out, it was cool and the scenery was pleasant.
Finally, I'm not a true runner. I'm a fast walker/slow jogger. The 'run' portion was really nice. Thankfully my legs are long and my walk is pretty fast. I even had enough energy to jog some and cross the finish in a jog.
The other racers and spectators were great. They were so encouraging and supportive. Tons of 'you can do it' and 'almost there.' Everyone cheers for everyone as the cross the finish.
My only negative experience was another racer who was really rude to me. I'm determined not to keep letting it bug me. She arrived late and when she went to rack her bike, a portion of my towel was under her tire. She was really mean about it as if I had intentionally crossed into her area. I apologized and explained that I didn't realize that anything would be in that area. Her reply was -"What- your a first timer?" She was so rude that other women around me kind of rallied around to help. I'm surprised at how much I'm still letting it get to me...hormones probably.
Now, I'm planning my next one. I'm sure my swim will go better now that I have an idea of what to expect....My goal is to improve an my performance and have fun.
Anyway,,,, I met some great people and had a really fun morning. I never, ever thought that I could accomplish that. The sense of accomplishment is pretty cool.

  


Two Year Spark Anniversary

I can't believe it been 2 years since I found this site! I came across it looking for a calorie counter and got so much more!!! Wow, how my life has changed. I quit smoking & stayed quit. Lost more than 50 lbs. & have kept it off.
On Sunday I am doing a sprint triathlon! When I first started I couldn't do 15 minutes on an elliptical because I was so short of breath.
I was always the fat girl, picked last. I'm still not a super athlete. I compete only to finish and love the sense of accomplishment when I cross that line. It reinforces that anything is possible!
I still have those last lbs. to go... but- I have learned that this is a journey, process, lifestyle... And I have had tons of support from all of you along the way!!!!

The gym has a new stairmaster type machine.
I climbed on ready to give it a go... It started off pretty slow. So I sped it up a bit. Still slow- sped it up a bit more. The next thing I know those escalator stairs are cooking, I'm holding on for dear life trying to keep up and reach for the stop button.
If I were watching someone else, it would have been really funny... a scene right out of a Carol Burnett skit.
A bruised shin and wounded ego survived the fall. My 15 year old daughter is still laughing...

Back on track to finally break thru this plateau. Saw an tv clip with Jillian whoever, "there are no plateaus- you just get sloppy with your diet and activity. On a rare occasion a client needs to add calories." I think she may be right.
