Pathetic

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Well, the pedometer only lasted a couple of days. Seems you have to raise your leg high enough when you walk to make it count. With bad knees, that doesn't happen. If I keep on SP one of these days I will get my act in gear. I am so depressed, I just can't get it together.

Thank you all for your encouragement. Today I did some house cleaning, something I don't do very often. Mentally I felt great doing it even though my knees and back were sore. Will try some more tomorrow.

I have three different pedometers and I can't say that I find any of them accurate. I find that they can cause us a lot of frustration, but they can at least give us an idea of how many steps were taking. I was sure I was getting so many more steps than I actually was. It was a real revelation.

Don't get too discouraged! Sometimes we just need a break....be gentle on yourself.

hmm, maybe that's why that pedometer never worked for me.....now where did I throw it?

Just remember every day is a new day and every step gets you one step closer to your goal. As others have said, try counting the minutes rather than the steps. That only gets me depressed since I can't walk that far without getting winded. Still ten minutes at a time is something I can do....or will do..once I work up to it. I am still on baby steps as far as walking is concerned; even with a walker, I still get winded. So keep up your spirits and just hang in there and remember we are all here for you. We know how it is because we've all been there..

The 10 minute suggestion is a good one. You could do it from home, a local park or the shopping mall if it is a rainy day. Minutes are as good as steps!

You CAN do this! Keep walking but switch to walking a set number of minutes. Try to go for 10 minutes nonstop and then take a break. I started out doing that several times a day.
Do you do any chair exercises? The Chair Exercise team really gave me some good ideas.
Stay positive,

Sorry to hear the despair you far feeling. I had about 2 weeks of that and just got back on track again.. well, I was till today. It's a hard job.... it's a lifelong journey. I have to give myself permission to use that 80/20 rule.... maybe it would be good for you too. We can't be perfect all the time....

I had surgery on my knee 12 years ago and it's never been the same since.. getting down down sometimes means not getting up with help. But this time, it's 150 days, I have been doing Walk Away The Pounds 2 Mile religiously now since at least the first of Feb. and I was afraid to do the Kick-backs for fear of aggravating the knee, but now I started slowly and am able to do them. Next on my agenda, is Zumba that everyone is talking about. I figure you are probably trying to count your 10,000 steps, I don't do that, but these are some suggestions of what I do, hope they might help. Good Luck, and stick around and ask for support and encouragement it's here for you and you will receive it... Guaranteed!!! You don't have to feel depressed and that you can't do this alone, cuz you don't have to... there are so many of us around, we'll talk, share, support and encourage....

pedometer

Thursday, April 29, 2010

I bought a pedometer and the first day only registered 61 steps. Pathedic, so yesterday I tried to up it and was just under 200 steps. If nothing else it confirms how little I walk. So this is my goal- to keep increasing the steps. and I will try the chair exercises that you are talking about. Thanks

Using the pedometer does motivate me to take an extra walk. Most of the time I only use it when I am walking the dog but recently tried it on the treadmill at the gym. Some pedometers will not register if you are walking on carpet and others register when you are riding in the car or taking the bus.

Dancing for steps what a great idea. Even if you have to slow dance... We had pedometers given to us at work and they wanted us to walk 10,000 steps a day. That to me seems impossible. But, a lot of people did it... emoticon

Try setting a timer for 5 minutes and walk that long; gradually increase the time.
I only use my pedometer when I go for my "exercise walks" - I don't really care how many steps I walk otherwise.
Just go slowly and add more steps as you feel ready.
Stay positive.

I loved my pedometer, and was so sad when it broke. I became a fantatic about my steps!! I walked extra laps around the grocery store; parked at the end of the parking lot; went up and down the steps at my house; and don't forget dancing. Dancing adds steps, too!

staying on track

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

So much of my life has been and is still about food, and how it has such a grip on me. I wish I could just forget about it and enjoy life. I have wasted so much time and effort on procrastination.
I am going for corteson shots in my knees next week and and hoping I will be able to start walking.

OH Leynancy, do I relate to your situation. I have had cortesone shots in both knees and then some kind of shots made with chicken ligimate to inject lubrication between the bones where the ligiment used to be. It is hard to walk. I do, but I have let it go so long now that when I walk I am immediately out of breath. I am sooooo out of shape. I plan on working on this very problem. I started today and hope to keep it going. I know that we can do it. Especially, now that the weather is nice. Lets go for it girl!!!!!! Good Luck.

I hope the shots help your knees. I agree about the chair exercises - you might want to check out the chair exercise team for some ideas or just google "chair exercise" and you'll find some videos to follow.

Back again

Thursday, April 22, 2010

After a 4 month leave, I am now back to recording food intake with sparks. It is the only way I can control what I eat. I must be consistent and will try to do it again.

It really does make a difference when we record our daily intake. I was losing more and faster when I took the time to track everything that i was eating.
