Day 65/1000 I Like Icing on my Cake! :-) (not what you might think)

Day 65/1000 (Sunday 19th)

Sunday was when I meant to write this, but the day got away from me. :-) My lasso skills being as bad as they are, I failed to rein it back in. Why don't they have lasso throwing on the Wii Fit Plus so I can get some practice in? *grin*

So, fully expecting after last weeks weightloss (remember the astonishing 2 1/4lb loss?) to have gained it all back as is my usual routine, I stepped on the scale with some trepidation Sunday morning. I looked down, rubbed my eyes, looked again, stepped off, found my glasses, put them on, stepped back on the scales again, looked down again, and (if I remember correctly) the following phrase escaped my lips, gradually rising in volume to a crescendo, while my eyes did a good imitation of coming out on stalks, and my jaw hit the floor:

"Oh...my...God! Oh my God! Oh my God!! Oh my God!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!!!"

No, I really wasn't seeing things. The scale read 12 stone 9 1/4lbs. I lost another 1 1/4lbs!!! That makes 3 1/2lbs in two weeks!

OK, I admit it! Losing weight is a HUGE rush! :-) No matter what I say about how being healthier and getting fitter are my main objectives, and that losing weight is just icing on the cake for me, so it's no biggie that the scales refuse to move.

Turns out I LIKE ICING ON MY CAKE!!! *grin*

The Wii has proved to be a massive boost to my progress. I can't believe the difference it is making. It has taken a few weeks of building up, but I am really pushing my boundaries now, and it is really paying off!

Would you believe that I went to Wii Fit Plus and played Rhythm Boxing for 38 minutes? I can't believe it myself, but I did! And I hate boxing! LOL

Plus there were 5 out of 6 songs on my Just Dance and Just Dance 2 Bingo cards, so I did those = 15 mins too. :-)

I also worked through several albums of songs, testing them for suitability as exercise music to accompany me on Tigger and Roo (mini trampoline and aerobic step) Got my steps in nicely for the day doing that. :-)

And talking of steps. I was set for a minimum of 6100 steps per day, and I managed that ever day this week:

Sun - 7260
Mon - 10716
Tue - 9204
Wed - 11220
Thur - 8138
Fri - 7726
Sat - 6523

Total steps = 60787, which = average daily stepcount of 8684

So I've increased to a minimum of 6200 steps per day. :-) Four more increases and I'll be on a minimum of three miles a day!

This coming week I am working on Wii challenges with Sparkfriends, and ones I've set myself, plus building an exercise plan to try and make sure that I fit all the most personally beneficial games in at least once a week. I am also back to tracking my food. I took some time off, which doesn't seem to have hurt, but I want to track again for a while and see how what I feel like eating fits in with what I should be getting calorie and nutrient wise. So far, so good. I've been a touch below my minimum calories once or twice, but it has balanced out over the week, and it seems that I have no problem keeping to the lower end of my ranges these days. I want to see that trend continue. :-)

Someone commented on my last blog that I shouldn't buy any more jeans yet, because I'll soon be dropping another size! I'm still happy to settle for a comfortable size 16, but, maybe a 14 isn't totally beyond the realms of possibility....

Wow! Never thought I'd see the day when I'd be saying that! Last time I was a fouteen I was in my early 30s. Pre-second pregnancy. I don't know exactly where the line between overweight and healthy is for me, but it might be interesting to find out whether it equates to a 14 or a 16! LOL I'm certainly a lot nearer to it. :-)

And now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get Day 66 under way. I have a two mile walk With Leslie Sansone planned, and a round of golf with my sparkfriend challenge buddies, among other activities. :-)

    CONGRATS on yet another weight loss!! Icing on the cake is good, it keeps us motivated even if our goal is health and fitness. It is nice to see results from what we are doing and it makes the times that we look to other measures more balance...and balance is key!

    I now know of SO MANY people who have had wii fit and got 'board' and got rid of it. But it is like I told a friend yesterday, who is thinking of getting one, 'It is like a Gym membership or an exercise bike. You don't get anything from paying for it, you have to use it! You can't go to the Gym and have sauna and sunbed and lose as much as someone who spends the same amount of time sweating and pushing to the limit!'
and you Lexie my love, are pushing it with the wii!! BRILLIANT!!!
Feeling better and better health IS what we all aim for .... but hey ...... don't the icing taste good????

*Imagine Tigger spitting out Haycorns here* :-)

They really don't! :-) It took 50g of Greek Yogurt to get the hot down to a manageable level on half the portion, which - on the plus side - really eeked out the sauce (and I'm using that spelling on purpose! LOL). Of course, on the minus side - it means that I still have half a portion of Rogan Josh to eat. LOL. I froze it, so at least I won't be eating it tonight! The only good news is that with the 100g of rice I needed to accompany the meal, I made my minimum calories, and with all the lamb and yogurt, I got a good protein day in. :-)

I have an idea that when I reheat it, adding some tomato and yogurt to the sauce as it heats through might make it more flavourful. It tasted ok. Just more heat than flavour, if you know what I mean. :-) I'm a more flavour than heat kinda girl when it comes to curry.

(and gosh, has it gone dark all of a sudden... *wanders to the back door*)

Well, this explains it...

The storm clouds are gathering. It's making it hard to see the keyboard, it is so dark in here. :-) Seriously, I think I need to put the light on. That, or practise my touch typing. *grin*

So, exercise today has been all cardio so far, to complete my catching up of:
Just Dance 2 Bingo - 7 songs @ approx 3 mins each = 21 mins
Just Dance Challenge, week 3 - 8 songs = 24 mins
Day one of new Just Dance Bingo - 2 songs = 6 mins
A walk to the Co-op for some bananas.

(Note to self - walk the extra distance to Waitrose in future... 76p for 4 small bananas is daylight robbery! And think of the extra exercise! There and back'll walk a banana off easily! LOL)

I hope to get even more cardio in later, when I test some songs out for suitability as Step Aerobic and/or Mini Trampoline accompaniment. (Tara went to Waitrose by herself yesterday, and came back with The Beach Boys and Bananarama CDs from the charity shop she popped into on the way back.) :-) Tigger and Roo do love music to workout by. :-)

Strength training, unfortunately, had to take a bit of a back seat this week because my right shoulder was playing up, but it is a lot better now, so that will be back on the exercise menu this coming week. :-)

Well, the clouds produced rain, but no storm, thank the gods. :-) It is alittle brighter now, though still raining. Guess I didn't blow hard enough Carla! emoticon

And talking of clouds, I have this wonderful CD by Kevin Kendle, called - surprisingly - Clouds. :-) As I was typing the last paragraph, my computer started playing the Altocumulus track from it, so I toddled over to You Tube, and lo and behold, there are videos of Kevin's music. This is Altocumulus.


The video is just a pic of a cloud, but the music is extraordinarily relaxing, and not only that, you can actually picture the clouds, he is so clever. If you like that, look up his Cumulus track and imagine yourself laid out on your back on a green hillside, watching the puffy little clouds go by. Wonderful! *happy sigh*

The whole album is just magical! :-)

    Sorry there was too much heat in the meal to enjoy it properly. Not good! Glad you got some good exercise in and are listening to your body and taking iteasy when it needs it.
Those are awesome clouds! I have been seen a few these last days. The latest rolled in when it was too dark to take photos or against the sun where I couldn't get a picture. Oh well, I will just enjoy yours!

Day 63/1000 The incredible shrinking groceries

It's official! I thought I might be imagining it, but some companies are admitting now that they have been shrinking soap and chocolate bars, among other things, rather than put prices up. Unfortunately, not all of them are being upfront about it. *growl*


If they are honest about it, then fine, I can make a choice depending on whether I still feel I am getting value for money, but those who shrink their products in a sneaky fashion make me very cross. Shouldn't we as consumers be asked which we would prefer anyway?

My biggest peeve? The Cadbury Creme Egg, which is a rare annual treat for me. I buy the mini ones now, because they have shrunk the normal one almost beyond recognition! Disgraceful Cadbury! What are you playing at, huh?

And the Toblerone is missing a triangle!

What have you noticed shrinking in your shopping trolley?

I think I'll shrink my cash. At the checkout, I'll point out which products have sneakily shrunk and make an offer for those, in relation to the size of the shrinkage, rather than pay what the till says I should. Bet Tesco would love that! LOLOL

Rhythm Parade Challenge: 6 beginner, and 4 advanced = 34 mins
Danced and danced and danced, catching up on Just Dance Bingo, Just Dance Challenge, week 3, and Just Dance 2 Bingo, after notifications failed to reach my inbox for almost a week. I'm up to date with all the Just Dance, and bopped a decent chunk off the Just Dance 2 Bingo backlog too. :-)
Total songs = 21, @ approx 3 mins each = 63 minutes

Wow! Hadn't realised. LOL I did it in stages, not all at once. It adds up, doesn't it! :-)

Total steps 7726

It rained pretty much all day today. Don't think it liked being told we were in a drought. It has rained significantly every day, since Sunday. We need it, but it is getting a bit wearing now. Time for a day off I think. :-)

I do believe that it is way past my bedtime! Better toddle off now and get some beauty sleep. :-)

    only the restaurants and fast foods do that here but only because we're used to the prices going up on an almost daily basis . if I see an odd package or bottle I don't buy.raising the price AND shrinking the product are a little too much , don't you think?

    I think I first noticed shrinkage with yogurt, but it is becoming noticeable with a lot of foods. You're really getting a lot of fitness in with that Wii, fun fitness!

    It's definitely happening here in the US, too. They still seem to be experimenting with our cases of soft drinks - changing how many cans are in it, but the prices don't reflect that. (Shouldn't be drinking the nasty stuff anyway!)

    That shrinking packaging irks me and is something that has been happening here for a few years. I've seen it with a great number of items. Personally, I'd rather pay a little more for the original size of something.

    I have noticed that we are getting less for our money. I suppose it is less calories but very underhand of manufacturers. A crisp packet is now mostly air.
You have really stepped up your exercise since you got your wii so that was a really good buy. You are doing great, don't buy too many size 16 as you will be down another size soon.
I had a day off yesterday and was really fed up of the rain but to-day I was out for an early run and the sun is still out. Have a good week-end

Day 62/1000 It's been a dodging thunderstorms kind of day

When we got up this morning - well, when Sophie and I got up - it looked quite promising weatherwise. I fed the birds, fed Sophie, and prepared to log in to Wii Fit Plus and do my body test. After that, I completed some Wii Fit Plus challenges my friends had set me - Bird's-eye Bull's-eye, and the Segway game, plus Big Top Juggling, which was my personal challenge of playing whichever game hasn't been played for the longest time.

Then, before getting out Wii Sports to play the Tennis challenge a friend had set, I went to get some breakfast, and realised it was raining. Waking Tara to let her know our town walk was in doubt elicited a very negative response, so I agreed to risk a soaking. LOL That put the smile back. :-) We were only going in because Tara wanted to buy a Neopets card so that she could buy goods from the website, so it was natural that she wouldn't want anything to spoil that. :-)

However, by the time I'd finished breakfast the rain had developed into a thunderstorm, forcing us to shut down the computers and I put my foot down. I love a good thunderstorm, but not when I'm out in it! LOL.

So, I had my game of tennis. I played a five-game match, and for the first time ... I WON! 3 games to 1! yay!!! :-)

Luckily for Tara, the storm was short-lived, so after a little chat we decided to take a chance and head into town. We walked quite fast! The clouds were looking very threatening, so I didn't want to hang around. We made it to Game, Tara bought her card, and claimed 2.50 off so it was half price, and then we walked at a good lick up to Waitrose for a few things for the weekend before scooting home. It did rain on and off, but at least we didn't have another storm until we got home. Then the next one hit.

And that's been our day for the most part. That, and I switched off the set top box before we went out in case we lost power and weren't there to sort it out. That resulted in a protracted time waiting for it to reboot this evening. Half an hour! Half an hour to reboot a TV signal! Good Grief! It's time for a new box I think. It still says NTL when you switch it on, but Virgin took over several years ago.

I shared a salmon fillet with Tara tonight,and this time, instead of smothering my spuds in butter, I broke them into little bits and added a measured amount of butter, stirring it in as it melted. I enjoyed them just as much this way, so this is the plan from now on. :-) I also ate carrots, broccoli and Helda Stringless runner beans.

Tomorrow I have a Waitrose Lamb Rogan Josh to nom. I don't eat a lot of ready meals, but I make an exception for curry. I only ever ate (or rather tried to eat) Rogan Josh once. My ex made it, and he made it so hot that I couldn't get near the plate without my nose running and tears welling up. The little bit I tried burned my tongue! He was then dumb enough to feed the leftovers to our poor Spaniel, and she cried all next day whenever she pooped, which she did a LOT! She was a dustbin on four legs, and would eat anything put within her reach, but there is a limit! geeze! Poor thing.

Once she stole and ate a whole bowl of pistachio nuts, shells and all. When she went to the toilet next day, she squatted to poop ... and machine-gunned the farm cats!!! LOL

She cried every time she pooped that day too.

Anyway, Waitrose describe their Rogan Josh as a medium strength curry, and I've used it as an excuse to buy some fat free Greek Yogurt, just in case, because some 'mediums' I can just handle, and others are too much for me without yogurt to cool them down. :-) They are also selling the same Greek Yogurt with blueberry sauce on the side now. Quite pricey, but I'll be trying a pot out sometime soon. :-)

I may eke the curry out over two helpings, depending on how it goes. I'm thinking it looks like it might be enough for two meals. If it is that would be great, especially if I like it, because it isn't the cheapest ready meal at nearly 4, so if it can stretch to two meals, I'll be able to have it more often, and other curries in their range too. :-) Usually I eat a side dish as a main, as they are half the price! LOL

Oh, and how many of you have spun a Bonus Wheel here at Spark today? I've ended up with 14 points in total. I like this new - if you earn 25 or more sparkpoints in a day you get to spin another wheel. :-) And how lovely that they have also added those other awards, and now give us our fitness trophies as soon as we've earned them. :-)

Well you have indeed spent your day dodging thunderstorms!! I am so glad that you were able to get what what you needed and home before you were soaked through. It is wonderful that Tara looks forward to these walks as much as you and even more when there is something in it for her..lol

Sounds like you had a wii good time today..lol I love that you are still enjoying it and it is not turning out to be a passing wonder. Hope you enjoy your dinner and are able to get enough out for two meals...that indeed would make it worth while.

    emoticon emoticon emoticon The things the dogs get into!! I feel for your poor spaniel!!! We had a really bad chewer for a dog once, and he would eat the corners of rugs and stuff and when he went to the bathroom, sometimes would need an assist to get the long strings out of him :(( He is lucky he never got bunged up with all that.
I love spicy stuff and I haven't met the spicy dish I couldn't handle. I regularly eat habenero pepper jelly (200,000 Scofield units) on my crackers for supper :) However, 4 pounds sound like highway robbery to me!! Most prepackaged meals around here run about half that price and I usually wait for a sale if I am at all interested.. I do love curry though, don't have it nearly enough..
We are supposed to get big thunderstorms rolling through here the next while. Just caught the edge of one yesterday.
I got my 25 points on my first spin LOL, its NEVER that good to me. My bonus spin was 7! Wow, Points fest, here I come!! Could do without all the extra trophies, they flood my friend feed and make it hard for me to find my buddies's blog in all the pages with my pokey connection.

Exercise today:
Highwoods, for 60 mins, but it was slow because Sophie was huffing and puffing most of the walk, it was so humid. Poor love. But we had nice chats, bumping into Mr. Sweetheart and his lovely old dog, and a couple of other owners, so it was pleasant enough, and I even had the presence of mind to find out his name, having already learned his dog's name. Funny how you can chat to the people you meet for ages and not even have a clue as to Christian names of owners, but you know every dog you've ever met by name, their foibles, and their treat preferences. LOL

I also walked to Waitrose and back, via Homebase for some strimmer blades. I've really made the last blade work its edge off, but finally I had to give in and buy a new pack. I've given up on my lawnmower. It doesn't like bumpy lawns, so anyone want to give a hover mower a good home? Not kidding! :-)

10 Just Dance songs. Drat you Sparkpeople! SOOO good when you work, and SOOO baad when you don't! *grin* I rely on my emails to notify me of challenges, and I didn't get any notifications for either of my Dancing bingo games, so I'm six days behind, and with 28 songs to catch up with. Twenty Eight!!! *gulp* I also discovered that had I had my emails I would have won a goodie on the 13th, so I did all the songs I had on the card up to that point (namely the ten mentioned) and claimed it, because fortunately no one else has jumped in. In fact, judging by the lack of response, I think I'm not the only one missing emails.

The latest batch of try-ons arrived today. These pics are of my keepers from the last couple of days:

I finally own a tracksuit top. They went through a stage of being pullover instead of zipped for a while, and I hated those, but this is a classic, and I'm thrilled with it.

I've ordered a matching tracksuit bottom to go with the top that are dark grey because they didn't have any black left, but as I doubt they'll be long enough in the leg anyway, it doesn't really matter and I like charcoal grey if by some miracle they do actually fit leg length-wise. :-)

Under the tracksuit top is my fave of the sports tops:

It is Nike, as you can see by the little logo, and I think it is just beautifully designed, from the little cap sleeves to the neckline. Loving it, and already wore it to do my dancing in this evening. It keeps my boobs in check just as successfully as my sportsbras do :-)

And what are those things lurking below the tops? Why, they are my NEW SIZE 16 JEANS!

Yep! Finally found a pair. I'm still waiting for my absolute fave Mason High Rise Bootleg extra long jeans to be restocked so that I can try them on for size, but these ones are almost as good. Mind you, they are tight, don't get me wrong, and not overly comfy to sit in .. YET. :-) But they pulled on and did up reasonably easily, and I went to Waitrose and Homebase in them and it felt so good to know that my btm was looking so much tidier! LOL

So, I need to work on shrinking a bit more so that I can sit in comfort in a size 16, but it is OFFICIAL! I can get into them and do them up without a problem! YAY!!!

All this excitement has prompted me to look in more detail at my Nutrition Tracker to try and assist the shrinkage, and I'm confused. My calories have gone up. I'm now allowed between 1900 and 2250 calories, but I have no idea why. Does anyone know exactly why the changes in the numbers of calories, protein etc change? I gather it is connected to info I provide, but which info exactly? I want to know so that I can adjust it if necessary, as that seems excessive to me.

Given my struggle to keep my fat and calories low, and get my protein high enough for the minimum, I'm stunned to see that today I fell short on calories by 300, and on fat by 9, barely made it to the minimum carbs, but got my minimum protein! LOL Talk about a contrary day! *grin*

I'm comfortably full and see no need to eat another 300 calories. Another day I'll make the 1900 with ease and be so hungry that I'll be going over my fat or calories to stop my tummy from rumbling. 1600 calories is comfortably above the danger zone (starvation mode trigger), so I'll take it as acceptable I think. I didn't log yesterday, but I overdid the butter enough to set my sinuses off (lashings of butter on new potatoes was my downfall), so a very low fat day today will balance that out nicely. :-)

I've been gradually making changes to my diet over the past year or more, the new potato/butter trap notwithstanding. *grin*...

I'm not eating as many crisps as I used to. Plus I found a new variety that I like, but that are less than half the calories of my favourites (French Fries anyone?), so I've been swapping them out on occasion. Less crisps, less cakey things (those Tesco jam and cream doughnuts are a really rare treat these days), no alcohol aside from a few bottles of beer a year.

No Dr Pepper - that was a biggie, so when I kicked that habit over a year ago, that instantly helped, as I drank about 4 litres a week. I drink carbonated water now instead. :-)

I've switched from Countrylife spreadable butter, to Countrylife lighter. It tastes every bit as good, but spreads much more easily, making it much, much easier to keep to a small amount on my bread.

I've upped my water to 10+ glasses per day, so much so that I don't even need to count anymore. It is a natural part of my day now, and I used to hate water! :-) And as a knock-on effect of that, I've cut my mugs of tea consumption down to 4-5 a day instead of about a dozen! Plus I use semi-skimmed milk, and barely a 1/4tsp sugar per mug. I've tried skimmed milk and it is coloured water, and though I'll drink plain water, I draw the line at having it on my cereal and in my tea! LOL I've tried cutting the sugar completely, but my tastebuds aren't ready to give up that last little perk just yet. :-)

I have fruit with my breakfast every day, even if it is just a banana sliced onto my rice krispies. :-) And I drink a portion of fruit juice with lunch. I drink water before and after meals to give my body the best chance of gathering nutrients from what I eat and drink. I discovered that drinking tea with a meal stops the body absorbing iron readily, and as I get anaemic if I'm not careful, this needed to be dealt with.

One thing I never had trouble with was eating veggies. Love 'em! :-) Still do, and no day is complete without a decent selection on my plate of an evening. Still not a fan of salad though. LOL Doubt I ever will be. :-) Mind you, I did discover that I like salad leaves in a ham, mayo and mustard sandwich, and I add spring onions and petit pois to my potato salad. (And occasionally some finely diced cucumber or red pepper) Still use normal Hellmanns Mayo, but I don't lather it on now. I've found that a small amount is just as effective for coating the potato, so that makes me happy. Like the butter, I'd rather shrink the portion than do without. :-)

So there you go. Some of the changes I've made to my nutrition over the last year. Most of it has been a lot easier to do than I expected, mostly, I think, because I made the changes gradually, rather than all at once. Getting used to one or two changes at a time is easier on your rebellious streak for one thing, and stops you getting that "I can't do this!" feeling of being on a restrictive diet!

Oh, and I weigh EVERYTHING that doesn't come in pre-packed portions, especially rice, pasta, potatoes, and cereal, because I have eyes bigger than my stomach! LOL

Sorry. I didn't know this was going to come pouring out when I started to blog tonight. I know food has been on my mind a lot lately, especially since our budget got so bad that I despaired of eating well when living purely on Tax Credits.

It really is hard to eat a good variety of fruit and veg, meat and fish when you have so little to buy food with. I'm now trying to work out ways to get more creative. :-) So that is why all this suddenly decided to pour out, I guess. :-)

I'd just suggest waiting a bit to buy more as you'll need a 14 soon :D

The calories increase is probably due to your increased activity. If, say, you initially put in that you wanted to lose 10 kg in a year with a sedentary lifestyle, then you changed the sedentary to active and left the same time and kg goals, the calories would go up.
To keep the calories lower you need to change either the target weight loss or the target date.

Well done also on the small sustainable changes to your diet. Just for information, I also used to say that I'd rather have less of the real thing, rather than go low fat, but now I use fully skimmed milk, lighter spread, low fat yogurt and Hellman's extra light. I actually prefer them now. I think my taste buds have changed and the full fat versions don't taste so nice any more. I could still eat full fat yogurt, except I really love Rachel's Organic low fat ones (not too keen on other low fat versions because they come with added sweeteners which I hate, but Rachel's Organic have nothing added). However, when I have full fat milk now I feel bloated and have to use much less. As I rely on milk and yogurt for my calcium intake (not to mention protein!), I'd rather have the low fat versions so I can have more without feeling bloated.
I use full fat mayo if I have chips in a pub, but I find it's really heavy so I often end up leaving it on the plate and having the chips on their own.
As for sugar, I do use the real thing because I think sweeteners taste vile (can't stand any of the diet drinks either for the same reason), but I haven't had sugar in my coffee or tea for about 15 years now and I really don't like them sweet. It's quite funny when someone makes me a drink and puts sugar in by mistake, 'cos I try to force myself to drink it out of politeness but they usually notice me pulling faces and make me a fresh one.

    Looking fantastic!! Well done with the size 16 jeans!!
Food is every bit as important as the exercise! You rarely mention it, so its nice to know what you are chowing down on :) You have made sensible, but not restrictive cut backs, so you won't feel deprived. If you are putting more cardio per week in your fitness tracker that will increase the calories, especially when you are closer to goal weight..
I like doing an hour of cardio every day because that allows me up to 1960 calories a day, so that is a lot of wiggle room to enjoy things.
Keep up the excellent work, you are doing wonderful!!

I am at work now, what is you excuses being up so late? :-)

On a tight budget? tell me about it!!! ... no ... you don't REALLY have to tell me about ... I KNOW!!
I tend to cope by having beans on toast, Jacket spuds, pasta and rice with home made sauces. for carbs
I buy a bulk bag of chicken and have a piece most days, plus a fair bit of milk (coffee made with milk and spoon of sugar for a late night treat) for protein.

I think the increase in your allowance may be from your work out tracking, if you start burning lot more, you need to eat a bit more or starvation mode will kick in. when mine went up, I just aimed for the lower end of the targets.

Anaemia? I am prone to that too. did you know that drinking a little pure orange juice with your meals incenses the amount of iron your body absorbs? I asked to see a professional nutrition lady when my weight wouldn't budge. she only told me two things I didn't already know. one was about the orange juice, the other was that tinned fish is no good for omega3.
