BBC news article: The day I ate as many E numbers as possible

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-10773893

A highly entertaining, enlightening and informative article. Note the Doctor's concerns near the end of the article. They were similar to mine as my jaw dropped nearer and nearer to the floor the further he got into his day. It beats me how he managed to eat what he did and live to tell the tale. LOL

I am really looking forward to the start of his TV series - E Numbers: An Edible Adventure, (Thursday evening on BBC2 at 8pm, for those who can get the channel). :-)

Hugs,
Lex xxx

I really like the main theme of the article. We really do get our focus all out of wack when we allow ourselves to be sidelined by the 'weird science' of may activists and bureaucracies, and loose sight of trying to eat a sensible and balenced diet.

Even though I'm somewhat grossed out by everything he ate, I'm glad the artile was written, and the more important message got out.

Oh my I feel nauseated just reading what he ate! I can't imagine eating that much of anything in one day. Interesting article, thanks for sharing. It just goes to show that with anything in life balance is key!

Don't get that channel here emoticon Mind you I am hopeful you will give us the highlights each week...lol

Have a great night!

I was reading the article as I waited for my rolled oats to absorb some of the water before turning them by way of the magic of my microwave into porridge for breakfast. Let's just say that after reading the article I have put off breakfast till mid morning. I have no idea how he managed to eat all he did for breakfast, let alone lunch and then dinner! Eeeuuuwww! emoticon As for his doctor's response to the amount he'd eaten, well, enough said.
It was really interesting to me to discover that a lot of the E numbers are actually natural products, well almost natural anyway, and not some lab-created chemical cocktails. I never realised there are recommended maximum daily intakes of these E numbers, let alone that they are so high. I have always tried to steer clear of the things as much as possible, although that is obviously not always possible.
That was a real lesson for me, so thank you. So often we assume we know the facts about something, but we only have a tiny piece of the total picture. I also loved the video of the 'red' wine tasting - it made me see why the colouring is added to a lot of foods - just so it will appear (and apparently taste) as it should.
Thanks for posting this, hope a lot of people check it out, cos we all need to know these things in order to have a properly balanced diet.
Hugs,
Chris.

52-Week Walking Plan Week 2, Day 4 etc.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Just a quickie this morning. We are in a rush to get out before the next big rainstorm hits. We have had some fun the last couple of days. Torrential rain, gales, flooding, even a tornado! Not us specifically, I hasten to add, though we've had our moments, but the next county up, which is only a few miles from us, they have really suffered. No one injured, thank goodness, but extensive damage to a vicarage and a forge, amongst other properties, and lots of trees down.

With the next front already drenching the Westcountry and heading towards us at a good rate of knots, we need to get up to Tesco for our monthly shopping trek for supplies asap. I don't mind getting wet on the way home, but it would not be much fun to traipse round the store while dripping wet! It is not my favourite shopping experience at the best of times. LOL

So, today so far:

52-Week Walking Plan
Week 2, Day 4,
10 minute walk

Pedometer stats:
Pace: 21 min mile (didn't push because of Tesco trip)
Calories: 45
Steps: 1,125
Time: 0:10:47
Distance: 0.51 miles

28-Day Bootcamp
Week 2, Day 4.
Video 4
Core exercises

I like this one, though I fudge the floor work using a chair and the wall.

Steps will be boosted from the Tesco walk, and strength exercise boosted by pulling Wilbur, my shopping bag on wheels, home laden with goodies, such as fruit juice, pasta, rice, and smellies for the bathroom. :-)

I don't like Tesco. Their ethics suck! But needs must when a low income drives... so I use Tesco to stock up on stuff I can't get at Waitrose, and a few things they make that we prefer to other brands, like their Light Choices Tikka Masala Sauce, which is my quick and healthy curry base. I add chopped chicken thighs for protein and iron, and a good variety of veggies - onion, peppers, courgette, mushrooms, green beans, sultanas, whatever I have to hand. I might throw some aubergine in this time. (Veggies from Waitrose local producers' section wherever possible) I cook it all up, eat one portion, and freeze the rest in individual pots for an easy grab on a busy day. Om nom nommy! :-)

Well, I'm off to get ready *casts anxious glance out of the window*
Catch up with you guys when I get back.
Have a great day!
Hugs,
Lex xxx

52-Week Walking Plan Week 2, Day 3 etc. And where did my day go?

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Glory be! I should have learned after the last time that I shouldn't leave my blogging 'until later' because later tends to become very late indeed! LOL

Never mind, I made it before midnight, which is the important thing.

OK, stats!

52-week Walking Plan
Week 2, Day 3,
15 minute walk

Pedometer Stats:
Pace: 20 minute mile
Calories: 69
Steps: 1,734
Time: 0:15:53
Distance: 0.78 miles

An uneventful walk, barely got over the bridge before the end of the first leg, but that's fine. Got a nice smile and a "Good morning" from my postie on the leg out (not the same one I was racing the other day, this is the one that actually delivers my post :-) ). He wasn't well last time I saw him, but he has taken a day off and is back to his normal speedy self again. He walks really fast, and I'd lose if I raced him cos he doesn't need his bike! LOL

I played 'Dodge the Dustmen' very successfully, until the very last bit of the walk, when they suddenly sneaked out of a side road and caught me on the home stretch. Still, a quick pongy whiff and it was all over! Yay! LOL

28-Day Bootcamp Challenge
Week 2, Day 3,
Upper Body
Big oops, cos I mistimed my bonus weight video yesterday. So I've done weights two days in a row. Fortunately this video only uses them for the first segment, so I haven't overdone it. Have moved my second use of the bonus video to Friday though, to fix the problem for the rest of the week.

Tigger time for 15 minutes while watching the news this lunchtime.

Mowing the lawn. I have an electric mower, but a very uneven lawn, so I get more exercise in with the thing than you'd think, especially when I hit tussocks of grass at regular - or rather irregular - intervals! LOL The mowing had to be aborted 3/4 of the way through the back garden because the weather front beat me to it! Never mind. The front of the house is done, and the rest can be taken down with the strimmer later in the week. I should have listened sooner. The garden had been calling me for about an hour before I went, "Oh, all right, I'm coming! Huff, huff!" If I'd been a good girl I'd have got the job finished in one run. I can be very lazy when it comes to getting the mower out.
emoticon

Other than that I've worked a fair few hours today. We did go into town yesterday, after deciding that the weather wasn't as bad as they'd said it would be. We did quite well too, only having to deal with a few minutes of rain while we were standing in a queue for Tara's Hot Sausage, and for part of the walk home.

I was able to get a couple of sheets of plastic canvas 10 count, that I had ordered nearly three months ago! I really want to use the local family-run shops for my supplies, but it is ridiculous that I had to wait so long for such a basic item, so I'm going to have to look elsewhere in the future. I had to wait nearly two months for wool for a blanket last time I ordered something from them. It saddens me that I'm going to have to go elsewhere, because supporting local businesses is very important to me, but I can't work like that. I have a business to run too.
emoticon

The good news is that I have finished the black edging of my Random Round Squiggle Cross Stitch/Blackwork design. I just need to decide how I'm filling it in now. That will involve spending some time staring at it I suspect. :-)

Tomorrow I'll have a little play with the plastic canvas. :-)

Have a great rest of the day everyone!
Hugs,
Lex xxx

    Lexie,

Another great day for you...even if you had to abandon finishing the backyard before you were able to finish...mother nature had her own plans emoticon

Love the cross stitch, you are going to have to share it when you are done! What are you planning for that plastic canvas?? I am amazed that your local shop won't order in larger quantities so that they have it in stock for what would be a regular customer!! They are leaving you no choice but to go elsewhere...sad.

Hope you get a restful nights sleep and that mother nature is more agreeable to your plans for tomorrow!

Bah, I despise mowing the lawn, even if all I do is ride around in circles (big lawn, @ 1/2 acre). For some reason it kills my shoulder. Weird because it's not like it is hard to steer.

Darned Dustman...can't pleasantly get a walk in with him, but our garbage would surely become a smelly mountain without him! LOL

I hate you will have to stop using the local shop. But if they are that slow, who can blame you?

52-Week Walking Plan Week 2, Day 2 etc.

Monday, August 23, 2010

Well, the weather may affect what I achieve today, because we have torrential rain and gales sweeping across parts of England and we are being hit by some of it. There was a lot of rain overnight, but I managed to fit my walk in this morning between downpours. The trees were fun. They are so soaked that when the wind blows they dumped significant quantities of water down your neck! *squirm* :-)

We were planning to go into town today to pay bills and get some art supplies, but if the weather deteriorates again, I'll have to complete my exercises on Tigger and Roo today and do the town trip tomorrow. Right now I'm cooking porridge for Tara and myself while we wait and see what's occurring outside. :-)

So far I have completed:

52-week Walking Plan
Week 2 Day 2
15 minute walk

Pedometer Stats:
Pace: 21 min mile
Calories: 69
Steps: 1734
Time: 0:16:13
Distance: 0.78 miles

28-Day Bootcamp Workout
Week 2, Day 2

Video 2: Lower Body

Bonus Video: segments 1 and 2 of the SP. 20 minute Dumbell Video

Plus SP. Upper Body Stretches Video

Wow! That was a lot of work! I certainly picked a tough bonus video to work with. :-)

I'm yawning! I didn't sleep well last night because of the weather, and because of some personal upset, plus I was silly enough to eat a pot of (low cal) choc dessert right before bedtime, which energised me so that it took ages for me to get off to sleep. Mental note to self: DON'T DO THAT AGAIN! :-)

Well, I've eaten my nommy porridge and apple, and now I'm heading for the kettle for a cuppa before deciding whether to brave town or not.

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of Lexie Goes to Town! :-) Kidding! LOL

Have a great day everyone!
Hugs,
Lex xxx

Week 2 of 28-Day Bootcamp Challenge: Bonus Video

Sunday, August 22, 2010

Note to self:

I have chosen the 20-Minute Dumbbell Workout for my bonus video because I want to do some more weights work, but I'll only be doing the first half of it. The rest is floor work without dumbbells. :-)
I'll have to do it on days 2 and 4 to avoid working the same areas of my body on consecutive days.
I'll finish with the upper body stretches.
See video links below.

Enjoy yourself Lex! ;-)
