A Planking I will go....

Thursday, February 23, 2012

Long time no see! Err, I mean talk, err type! Whatever! lol I've been hittin' the books and getting back into the school groove. My algebra class is giving me fits which is really frustrating b/c I aced it in high school. I was even past algebra but being away from it for 10+ years has proved to make things difficult! Oh well, I'll live. I just wanted to pop on here and show you my planking pics from the other day. Half of you probably already saw them on Done Girl so just ignore me! ;)

To celebrate 100 fans I had my daughter to take a picture of me doing a head stand! I hadn't done one in AGES and have been admiring some friends who talk about head stand push ups! I thought I'd give it a whirl and this is what came of it....LOL!

So for 200 fans I went above and beyond that. I went planking!! This was my first attempt off my deck. It took a while for my daughter to get the picture--I thought I was gonna die! LOL Not really...but kinda! ;)

Here's my Walmart plank! hehe

And my trash can plank!

(I know, I'm so trashy!) haha ;)

And last but not least, mini done girl had to join in on the fun! She couldn't stop laughing--it was a ball!

It was so much fun! Gotta start thinking about what I'll do for 300 now! :D

This is hilarious! I found you following the SP crumb trail on my feed, as I say, and glad I did. This was a much needed chuckle. Thanks for posting this.

I remember going back to do math after a major time gap (for me it was more in the seven-year range, but no matter). I was glad that my old alma mater offered remedial math that I got permission to audit, on a case-by-case basis, with the individual professors. The instructors were especially gracious (not one that I approached, refused my request to take his/her class), when I explained my predicament: There was no way I could even think of doing calculus without seeing the high school sequence again. And they even graded my quizzes, too! Now that was generosity!

LOVE your plank pictures! All of them! What an example you are setting for your daughter. You should be very proud.

All the best as you continue on your journey to better health,

Nu

Okaaay, I'll spill the beans!

Friday, January 20, 2012

Okay okay, I'll stop keeping you in suspense! This whole last week I have been working non-stop on researching a different career route. This past semester I have learned a lot about the social work field through other students and teachers and it turns out that they make even less than I thought! It seemed like I was doing a lot of hard work to end up with a crappy paying job. I thought at first that it didn't bother me and that social work was still what I wanted to do, but the more I thought about it, it just didn't seem worth it. I started researching different careers that would produce more income and came up with something that would enable me to make twice as much money, (maybe even triple), have great hours, be able to leave my work at work, (you know as a social worker that would be TOUGH!), great benefits and awesome dental insurance. AND I would be in school about the same amount of time as originally planned.

Okay, so are you dying to know already?!! Lol I'll spill the beans....Dental Hygienist! I found on Salary.com that the average hygienist makes $60k annually, with the top 10% making $90k and the bottom 10% making $40k. My dad also called his friend that is a dentist to confirm the numbers and he said that he hires hygienists starting at $36 an hour. Ummm, cha-CHING!! Yes, Please!! I don't know about you but for that kind of money I will stick my hand in the nastiest mouth ever! Plus, I would much rather deal w/ dental disease and mucous than child abuse cases.

Soooo, this whole past week I've been adding classes, dropping classes, and researching dental schools. I've got a plan and I'm stickin' to it this time! I'm totally at peace with my decision and actually think I've made a very wise choice. My bf and family are being very supportive and are backing me all the way. I feel good about this! emoticon

So what do you guys think? Sound like a decent plan? I know I was going for a more fulfilling job, but I can always get my fulfillment by volunteer work. emoticon
I'm excited for what's to come!

I'm so glad to hear that you are doing what YOU want to do. I happen to work in the social service field and to be able to truly make a career of it, you need to want to do this kind of work. Those that "fall" into this field are usually not happy with the choice that they have made and end up stuck and hating their work. I on the other hand love this work and you are 100% correct in that work does not stay at work and no we don't make a ton of money. I do it because I love it and woudn't have it any other way. The feeling of knowing I made a difference in someone's life is amazing!

I know a true career choice shouldn't be about the money but I have to agree with you. I debated studying social work and actually did a 6 week stint in an outport community and realized it really wasn't for me. It is one of those careers that you study long and hard and still end up with a crappy job for all of the things you have to put up with. I fully admire social workers but realize it is not for just anybody!

Just keep in mind that many people HATE going to the dentist and may dislike being there. Don't mistake those negative feelings for YOU personally. I get upset when anyone at the dentist thinks I don't like them and they cop an attitude with me. I kind of feel like they should be nice regardless of my negative feelings. Don't get me wrong - I'm NOT rude or anything like that, but my negativity definitely shows through. Also - I HATE the drill (which the hygenist uses a lot) and I am sound sensitive so the noise can trugger headaches. I ask the hygenist to stop and give me a break quite often during the visit. If this bothers her, then I get upset b/c I feel like she needs to conform to my needs. It's a very personal thing to have someone in your mouth.

(Just a little feedback from the other side of the chair for you to contemplate)

There is all kinds of opportunity for health teaching and health promotion as you are working at that job and not just directly related to teeth and gums. You never know how your kindness and presence may touch someone....you don't have to kill yourself with a low-paying and emotionally draining job to be kind!

Excellent choice. I worked at Child Protective Services for our County, I am a paralegal and was surrounded by the social workers. They have it VERY tough, threats, odd hours, too many hours and always threats of lay offs. Of course there are other areas, but it is tough! I think I've got to know you well enough that yes you would bring it home, it's hard not to. Heck I was always depressed when I worked there, it took me awhile to realize it. ANY WAY, I have heard that hygentist make a pretty penny, and not work you'll bring home. PERFECT CHOICE, you'll be successful at anything you do. All my best.

I work in the Criminal Courts and I think that the Social Workers have a difficult, sad and sometimes dangerous job. I also don't think the job security is very good.

I went to the dentist on Thursday; I had received a call earlier in the week from the dentist's office telling me that my regular dentist would not be available and if that was a problem, I should call and reschedule. I immediately thought, "I spend more time with the hygienist" (I go to the same person each time) "and it would be a bigger problem if she wasn't there." Lisa is very good at what she does and I've often thought that I might have chosen that career path if I had to start again.

Give it a try!

Actually, I wanted to place foster kids, but then I knew I would want to take them all (okay most of them) home and like you said....leaving work at work. It was my first semester of college (way back when) and I felt like you did, besides emotional attachment, you work so hard to make so little, how rewarding it that?     Leslie, a wonderful blog, and you are certainly putting you first. So that you can take care of you, your family, and be inspired to help so many in different ways, including your new dental profession. They need many kind, loving, gentle, sweet, caring people like you to work as a dental hygienest to work in the mouths of many of us that have very sensitive mouths and gums, or are nervous/scared of dentists. You'll be able to share your beautiful self with them, and have them relax in your hands.

Here's to your new direction. I am so proud of you. Keep us posted and congratulations on making your new choices. Love you sweet friend.

Totally agree with all the other commentators! A great choice, a wise decision! As you said you can always volunteer for the social work side of things.

A classic example is me, I work as a Child Health Nurse, Lactation Consultant for the government and get less than $ 40.00 an hour. To get the qualifications to be where I am I did 6 years of study and practise. 3 years general nursing, 1 year midwifery nursing, 1 year child health and an average of a year for my Lactation Consulting Accreditation and that has to be renewed every 5 years !

Go for the money! Have to be realistic in this day and age!

In this day and age, financial security is essential. I agree with REJ7777 that it's a sad commentary on our culture when teachers and social workers get paid less than... a dental hygienist! But it's also important for a woman to be able to provide for herself and her children whether or not she has a partner. So I say: Go, Leslie! Shine those teeth!!!!

It's a sad comment on society when hard-working teachers and social workers are so badly paid, that intelligent, caring, young adults are discouraged from going into those extremely important professions.

But as far as you're concerned, dental higienist sounds like a wonderful career choice! You'll still be helping people, just in a different way... and getting very well paid for it too!

New Year, New Plan

Friday, January 13, 2012

I'm off to a running start this year! I've taken some new "before" photos and measurements because I figure that this is a new leg of my journey and I'm kind of starting over. The scale started moving in the wrong direction over the holidays but I'm DONE with that! Before Spark I would've just kept gaining until all of the weight was back on but now I realize that I'm not destined to be fat! That is a lie I've told myself for too long! I'm destined to be FIT, SEXY, and gosh darn beautiful! emoticon

My new plan for the next 30 days is this....

emoticon Cardio on M, W, F, Sat.
emoticon Strength Training on T, Th, Sat.
emoticon Rest and relaxation on Sundays
emoticon Try a new healthy recipe once a week
emoticon Track my food
emoticon Lots and lots of water

I'm also loving my new facebook page!! I've been seeing lots of familiar faces from Spark and I think that's great! I love "seeing" more of my Spark friends! Hopefully it's motivating you as much as it's motivating me. To all of my followers on there, thank you for your support! And to all of my newbies that are just starting their journeys, I look forward to cheering you on and celebrating all of your weight loss victories! Let's ROCK this journey! emoticon emoticon

(p.s. If you missed the link in my last blog, here it is again. I'm almost to 100 likes!! I've got to think of a good way to celebrate it with everybody! I'm thinking of some sort of fun challenge. Ideas are welcome!) www.facebook.com/donegirl

    Leslie,
You continue to motivate me in the right direction, thank you my friend. I need to write out my goals for this year and this month. I am still striving to be that positive impact upon my own life just as you are. I don't have facebook so I can't check it out! Shoot such is life. Loving your plan though.
