Low mileage for Father's Day

Sunday, June 17, 2012

I had a really relaxing day today. Walked the dog twice, walked a third time wearing him, and pedaled like mad for 16 minutes. That was it for exercise today. That is a rest day for me. That means I took two rest days this weekend instead of just one like I usually do. I doubt it will hurt me though, in fact it might even be good for me. It isn't like I took the day off completely, just skipped the light ST I do normally, and kept my mileage within reason.

This evening we had a combined Father's Day/7th Birthday party. The food was ridiculously good, the conversation was lively, and we had everyone at the table once again, including my cousin from NYC and my eldest niece. We were 12 people at table. I took Cooper along and he was very well behaved and snuggled with pretty much anyone who would let him. My dad said I should leave him the new dog carrier for him next weekend when I am out of town, and dad dogsits. My dad walks with poles so a leash would be too awkward, but it should be okay if dad is wearing Cooper. This will be the first time I have been away from my dog overnight since I adopted him last August. I think I already have separation anxiety. LOL

Amazing how quickly the little guys become part of your life & it's so hard leaving them behind even for just a quick trip - would try not to fret though they don't notice you gone half the time lol.

Glad you had a good time. :))

What a nice day for you and your family. It is hard to leave your pets behind. Like leaving kids I think.

Walking while wearing my dog...

Saturday, June 16, 2012

I finally got my camera and computer to communicate with each other, so I am able to post a picture of the new dog carrier I just got this week. I took Cooper for his third walk in it today. The first time we went out it really slowed me down, but my speed is already starting to pick back up. I have been taking him on my 5k route, so hopefully the next time I go out without him my speed will be much faster because I am training with the extra weight. We will see in a couple weeks when I walk my first official 5k. So here is his Outward Hound legs out front carrier...

In other news... my dad asked me today if I would consider moving back into my parents' house with them. I told him that if mom got sicker and they needed my help that I would consider it, but for now I am happy where I am. I have lived with them before as an adult, and there was noticeable friction, but maybe since I am getting my life more healthy some of that will be less noticeable. I would definitely be able to save more money for doing fun things if I weren't paying my full rent and utilities. I will have to weigh the pros and cons.

I have never seen a carrier like that but I don't think it would work for my boxer. LOL She would love it to though. Enjoy your day emoticon

    LOL. Love the dog carrier.

If you move back home, is it possible to get yourself set up so you have almost separate living arrangements? Like a mother-in-law apartment? Or separate entrance?

What will they think of next!! I like it though. I moved back home after 25 years and it is very hard being accountable to someone else. But Mom needed my help.

Cooper looks great in his carrier. Hope he didn't squirm around too much the first time you had him in it.

Moving home would save you some money, and it would be nice to see your parents. Just wonder how hard it would be to be back at home once you have been out on your own.

How adorable! I bet you're burning some extra calories when you carry Cooper on your walks, too. And just think, you used to carry that much extra weight around (or even more) all the time!

Cool numbers, and a good workout

Friday, June 15, 2012

I calculated the numbers for the 5% Challenge today. In order to lose 5% of my current weight I need to lose just over 10 pounds. If I accomplish this I will be in the 190s. I have been working towards reaching One-derland by my birthday in July. It is doubtful I will make it since it is only 3 1/2 weeks away, and I have 6.5 pounds left to lose to reach that goal, but it will be close. If I can keep up my level of exercise and maintain healthy eating habits for that time I might just squeak by. I won't hold my breath though. LOL

I weighed myself today and I was down exactly 2 pounds from last week. I try not to go by the scale that much, but seeing the number shrink just does something wonderful for my morale and motivation.

It was my scheduled day at the gym today. I went a little later than normal, as neither Cooper nor I seemed to be able to get ourselves moving today. I didn't take him out for his morning walk until 11am. He was happily sleeping in my lap while I fiddled around on the computer before I woke him up to go for his walk. After lunch I finally made it to the gym, where I did 22 minutes on the elliptical, 22 minutes on the bike, 2+ circuits of the weight machines, ball exercises with the 10# weights, floor exercises and stretching. I got home, rehydrated, tucked Cooper into his new carrier, and went out and walked a 5k. It adds about 10 minutes to my time when I wear the dog, but he seems to enjoy it, so I will keep taking him along. After dinner I took Cooper out for a 2 mile walk on the leash... and he walked the entire distance.

Dinner was pretty yummy. I made a pork stir fry. I got strawberries yesterday, so they were dessert. I managed 3 days in a row with my sodium intake within range, but I went over today. Oh well, at least I know I can do it, if I work at it.

Tomorrow I am going out to my parents' farm for lunch. Dad said we could stop at the store so I can buy my niece's birthday present. I have heard rumors that her party is going to be on Sunday, but it hasn't been confirmed yet. She is going to be 7 years old.

File "wearing" Cooper in your tracker as hiking with a pack more than 10 lbs.

Actually, I think its really good because it adds a new level of challenge to your (already considerable) walking. It will be close, but I think you have a good chance of making your 5% goal.

A new toy

Thursday, June 14, 2012

I ordered a new carrier for Cooper, and it came today. It's a legs out front carrier from Outward Hound. We tried it out today, and he seemed to enjoy it. He sits facing out on my front (I have a picture, but I can't get my camera and computer to communicate, I'll try again tomorrow to post the picture), where he can see the world and sniff all those delicious scents in the air. I took him out for a 5k to try it out. It did slow me down a little to wear him like that, but not by much. Now I can take him with me when I go out for my mid distance walks. It even helps my posture, because I have to keep my back straight and my shoulders back in order to keep the straps where they belong. I am very pleased with our new toy... though maybe it is more of a tool than a toy.

All together today I walked 6.6 miles and did a little over an hour of light ST and stretching for my fitness today. I also managed to stay in range on the sodium again today. My calories have been running a little on the low side, but I am generally pretty well satisfied with what I am eating and the amount I am eating, so I am not really concerned. I made a tentative walking date with a friend for Saturday afternoon, and tomorrow is a scheduled gym day for me, so my fitness plan for the next couple of days is in place, now I just have to sit down and plan ahead with food. I have been slacking off on planning my meals ahead. I have been doing pretty well anyways, but it makes it more difficult to do the grocery shopping. I am all about making grocery shopping as fast as possible. My mom can spend hours in a grocery store (which drives me nuts if I am with her), but I like to get in, shop, and get out.

Can't wait to see pics :)

We were talking at work yesterday about shopping, general and supermarket and the general consensus was that I wasn't a natural woman since I just about hated all shopping. I go for what I need and do it as quickly as possible lol glad to see I'm not alone :))

Have a fab weekend!

I am going to have to check out this new toy. I have a yorkie poo who loves to go with me when he knows that I am heading out for a walk. He usually does okay for the first mile, but after that I have to carry him, which can be quite cumbersome considering I have a water bottle (usually for him...LOL) and my other dog on a leash. My other dog, a westie, can hang with me unless it is HOT...hmmm...I wonder if they make one for two...LOL...

I might be a little crazy...

Wednesday, June 13, 2012

It was a busy day today. I had a 10:30am appointment in the town next to where I live. My dad picked Cooper and I up just before 10, and dropped me off, taking Cooper out to their farm for the day so that he could play with the other dogs and the crowd of kids that congregate there. It was much better than sticking him in his crate for hours.

After my appointment I walked home and grabbed a quick lunch and changed into my workout clothes. I had a 1:30pm appointment with the PT at the gym, so I got there early enough to do my cardio and 1 circuit of the machines before my appointment. He added 4 lower body machines to my workout, then I finished a second circuit of the machines, before moving into the studio to do my ball and floor exercises. I am still using the 10# weights for the ball exercises, but I think I might attempt the 12# weights next week.

After the gym I walked home again and rehydrated, called my parents to see how the dog was faring and let them know I was on my way, and grabbed a hat since the sun had finally come out. Then I walked out to my parents' farm. It took me exactly an hour to get there, but it is all uphill. It goes up about 200 feet in elevation in the 3.5 miles from where I live to their farm. Out at the farm I ran around chasing the dog for a little while, then sat and chilled on the deck and watched the birds at my mom's birdfeeders. I especially like the woodpeckers and tanagers.

Dad drove me and Cooper home around 5pm, just in time to get ready for my walking date with my SIL's mother at 6pm. We took a slightly different route than usual, so instead of 3.1 miles it was another 3.5 miles for me. (It was less for her, because I had to walk home from her house.) Then I turned right around and took the dog out for a 1 mile trot... his last walk of the day.

That put me at 7:30pm, which is a little late for dinner, but oh well. I had a chicken souvlaki salad (no olives), and strawberries for dinner. For the second day in a row I am within the recommended range for sodium in my diet. I eat well, on a very limited budget. Controlling portions, and limiting waste keeps me within my budget. I still splurge on occasion, but even that is within reason.

Anyway, all together I walked 12 miles today, and put in a 2 1/2 hour workout at the gym. I am tired tonight, but it feels good! Tomorrow I am going to take it a little easier, and limit my mileage and stick to light weights and body weight exercises in my living room. I'll get crazy with the workout again on Friday. I like my rest days, but I love my insane workout days the most!
