The Fall 5% Challenge kicked off today, and I decided to start out with a bang. This morning I decided to walk a 10k this afternoon. I even arranged to have my family come over and play with the dog whilst I was out trotting around. (My brother and his two daughters came to my apartment and dogsat for me.) I psyched myself up by calling friends and family and telling them what I going to do. At 2:50pm I set out on a route I had mapped out. I finished up at 4:40pm (the time includes a stop to use the bathroom and grab a second bottle of water). One hour fifty minutes is a decent time for walking a 10k, I think. It is an 18 min/mile pace on average, but I know I slowed down on the last two miles, so I started out at a faster pace. There is one long, gradual hill on my route which I hadn't taken into account. I kept up the pace up that hill though. I was winded by the top, but then I was going downhill, so I could catch my breath.
Of course, I also walked the dog for 45 minutes this morning. (He slept until almost 10am this morning, after playing with my youngest niece for hours yesterday and walking 5 miles with me!) He gets one more walk this evening, which I think will be our 20-25 minute loop. That would put my total cardio minutes for the day at about 180, or three hours. Too bad the maximum I can add for the challenge is 120 minutes. Tomorrow I will stick closer to home, but I might get on the stationary bike for a little while in addition to the walks I take with Cooper. I will have to see how I feel tomorrow!

My niece came over for the afternoon to play with me and Cooper... well, with Cooper anyway. We went for a creekwalk. Fran skipped shale in the creek and Cooper would chase and retrieve. He also likes to clean up the creek by removing the leaves one at a time. I forgot to take my camera on our walk, which is sad because they were awful cute. But when my brother came to pick Fran up I got some nice pictures of Frannie and Cooper. She was trying to imitate everything Cooper did, but she just couldn't get her toes in her ear! Cooper and Fran played for about three hours straight.
Earlier in the day I managed to catch Cooper just sitting, not bouncing off the walls. I don't know why anyone would have given him away. He is sweet, well-mannered and quite gregarious. Makes me wonder where he came from though. He acts like he was well-loved wherever he came from originally!
On a different note, my pedometer is already over 10,000 for the day and we will take one more walk this evening. I think I will end up with the full 24 points for cardio again today. Also my friend made her flight this morning just fine, but I missed my exit on the way home and got a little lost. Traffic patterns in downtown Buffalo (NY) have changed some in the last 15 years, and in the dark things weren't as familiar. Oh well, obviously I made it home okay and that's what counts!

I get my 6 year old niece tomorrow afternoon for about 5 hours. Or rather, Cooper and I get to hang with her. I am driving her grandmother to the airport early (we have to leave at 4:45am), coming back to walk the dog and take a nap, then Fran is getting dropped off after her French lesson to play with us. My friend Kat is coming over too. We will probably all go for a walk down to the creek so Fran and Cooper can go wading. Of course, there is rain in the forecast, but we will go even if it is sprinkling.
Family is so important in my life. Even when everyone's lives get hectic and we don't talk for days I know they are there if I need them, and I am available if they need me. I have issues with certain members of my family (every family has at least one, right?), but when the chips are down I know they have my back. I have friends like that too. I really am blessed in my support system.

I got chased in from my last walk of the day by a storm. I don't mind walking in the rain (though the pooch does mind), but I draw the line at lightning. That's a safety hazard, and I am not willing to take the risk.
Before my last walk of the day with my pup, I went out with my walking buddy and did the second to last day of the training program for a 5k. (Of course, I already did one on Monday, just to see how good my time was.) We covered 1.63 miles in 30 minutes. That is only a 19 min/mile pace, but we weren't really exerting ourselves as much as we could have, so that is a pretty good distance in that amount of time. I got 150 minutes of cardio in today over the course of the whole day. Cooper did all but 30 minutes of that with me. The vet told me to cut back a little on his exercise, but he always wants to keep going on our walks! I guess I have to be the "mean mommy" and drag him in before he wants to go.
I didn't do any really long walks today, and my pedometer still got up to 13,200 steps. That's a little over 6 1/2 miles. I guess I can admit to myself that I have an active lifestyle now. I never thought I would be able (or want to) say that about myself, but I feel a little proud of the fact these days. My dad is definitely impressed, and that feels good. I have always known he loves me, but I haven't always been certain he was proud of me... especially when I wasn't doing anything of which he could BE proud. Now I know he is proud of my recent accomplishments, and the fact that I am setting tougher goals for myself. I have even begun to consider the possibility of rejoining the workforce, though that might be physically impossible. (At least the desire is there once again!)
These days all things seem possible. I don't just think about doing things, accomplishing things... I do them or make my very best effort to do them. I can't ask any more than that from myself. Even if I don't manage to accomplish something I attempt, I am at least making the effort to try. What's the old quote? "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!"

Current weight: 272 (down 4 pounds this week)
Target weight: 258.4
By When: Nov. 19, 2011
Calories Eaten: Eat between 1,640 and 1,990 calories per day
Calories Burned: Burn 1970 Calories per week
Weight Progress: Go from 318 to 258.4 by 11/19/11
I think I got all the info I need.
Yeah, I lost four pounds this week, which is nice. I also dropped four years on my "body age" according to the scale, and dropped another .6 on my BMI. My resting metabolism jumped up a little (yay!), and my muscle percentage rose this week. I also checked my blood pressure today and that was right on target. (It usually is, but I like to check it anyway.) But the best part of the day was when the nurse said I was an "inspiration," and she wished she was more active like me! Like me? I never thought I would ever hear someone say that about me. Talk about a compliment!
