Day off

Friday, April 11, 2008

There comes a time when we all need to take a day off from working out and I think today is that day for me. I was reflecting a little bit on why I've plateaued and I think it's because I'm working out too much. So I'm going to take it easy today and just go for my daily walk during lunch...no hardcore running or anything. Tomorrow I'll pick it up again, bright and early before heading off to see the apartment.
Reading Jen's blog also got me thinking...maybe I'm subconsciously afraid of getting down to the weight I want to be. There are many expectations that I have about being at my goal weight...emotionally and socially...a lot of them having to do with guys. What if I get to my goal and it's not what I expected? I love myself, but I want to lose weight so be healthier...to fit in better physically with my siblings (who are both really toned)...to be able to go to the store and not have to try on 10 pairs of pants before finding 1 (if any) that fits....you know what...even if it's not what I expect. I want to get there for me. Plateau...I will break you.

**April Surprise Exercise 11**
Reverse Crunch
~ Lie on your back and lift your legs up so that they are bent at 90 degrees, calves parallel to the floor
~ Put your hands on either side of your butt for lower back support
~ Slowly lift your legs, bringing your feet toward the ceiling and your quads toward your stomach. Make sure you don't swing your legs. You want to isolate the abs and not engage the hip muscles
~ Try for 25 of these!
~ This helps get rid of that annoying lower belly fat aka the pooch

I'll be trying these tonight. I'm glad you took a day off. You're right, sometimes we just need a rest. You will break the plateau I'm sure of it and you know what, it should be for YOU and no other person or reason. I feel like I'm out of the loop, I will catch up on everyone's blogs tonight. My back is finally feeling better -- still sore but better - and I'm sick of not doing anything. I'm coming back tonight (4/14) See you then..... emoticon

I love these exercises, pictures too! You are great. I have been doing these but I think I have been doing them wrong too cause they haven't helped my pooch. I'm not talking about my dog. I'll keep doing them cause I really want this gone. I do 24 every other day. Is that too few or too many. I also do bicycle crunches, same number, same days. emoticon

I have been doing the reverse crunches as part of my strength training, but I think I've been doing them wrong. Oops! And I just read somewhere on SP that working out too much can actually hurt your efforts. I think you definitely deserve a day off!

Thanks for your comments on my blog. I'm feeling better tonight. I am a lot more confident than I used to be, believe it or not. But I do revert to being totally self-conscious and not at all confident in certain situations (around guys I'm attracted to, job interviews, etc.). I'm working on that!

yes - get rid of that pooch! Actually I will never be rid of it! emoticon

I used to not take days off from exercising. But I have been doing it more lately. I will just do some squats, dumbbell reps and crunches - then skip the rest. You are right - our body needs that break.

Also check your menu - if you are eating the same things - your body adjusts to it. Change it up.

MTC - Day 12

Thursday, April 10, 2008

Phew... last MTC workout for this week. I'm definitely going to feel the burn tomorrow. Running at a 12 incline at 6mph is hard...I'm panting after about 20 seconds and when I finish at 1 minute I feel like I'm about to die...but of course I just have to move on to the next part of the circuit! Does anyone else get kind of scared before they weigh in...I feel like so much is resting on this week's weigh in. I haven't lost in the past 2 weeks and I'm hoping that this program will kick me through this plateau...so much pressure :-P

**April Surprise Exercise 10**
It's a bird...it's a plane...it's...Superman!
~ Lie on your stomach with arms stretched out in front of you and legs straight behind.
~ Contract your abs and lift your arms and legs a few inches off the floor
~ Hold for 10 seconds. Lower and repeat for a total of 10 times
~ This move is great for your abs.
~ For an added challenge try doing 1 Superman for 1 minute.

MTC - Day 11

Wednesday, April 09, 2008

When I first started this program I thought that I was going to dread my workouts because I knew they would be really hard. Little did I know that I would actually look forward to my MTC workout days. I think it's because they are both challenging and at the same time different every day. There's such a variety of exercises that seeing the same one twice in one week is actually a blessing rather than a curse. I'm hoping that I'll get the results that I want when I'm all through. Even if I don't, I'm having fun in the process and that's what it's all about :-)

I'm trying to visit my future apartment this weekend. My aunt said that it's going to be bad weather so we may not go, to which my grandma replied, what are you a princess and you can't get a little wet?? I could help, but laugh. She puts things into perspective.

On a side note, did anyone see the Biggest Loser last night? It was the last show before the final weigh in and I couldn't believe the numbers that they all put up. Ali going from 146 pounds to 135 in a week??!?!?! Holy crap. I wish I could lose 11 pounds in a week, let alone at that weight. And Kelly losing 13!! The girls kicked butt! So did the guys, 15 lbs and 12 lbs are nothing to be ashamed of, but wow!! I kind of wish that they had a Biggest Loser show for people who were overweight, not just obese. I know I could do with some face-to-face Jillian butt kicking.

**April Surprise Exercise 9**
Side Lunges (see picture for leg stance)
~ Stand with feet together and abs tight
~ Take a big step to the left with your left foot and shift your weight onto your left foot.
~ Bend your knee (making sure it doesn't go past your toes) and stick your butt out.
~ Lunge as far as you can comfortably go (think like the similar stretch)
~ Step together and repeat with the right leg. This is 1 set. Try for 10 on each leg
~ For an added challenge you can hold dumbbells to increase your weight or try for 20 on each leg.
~ This lunge is great for the outsides of your butt as well as the inner and outer thighs. I definitely felt it the day after!

I don't watch BL either but that sounds like an impressive loss for a week. I am with GIS_JEN on this one. Is it healthy? and will it be long term?

Isn't it unhealthy to lose that much weight in a week, especially at that weight? I don't have cable so all I get is static on my tv.

You bet I watched BL last night!! Just when you think they can't lose any more!! I was SHOCKED to see Ali put up that 12 lb. loss at this point in the game! Absolutely insane.

I'm totally rooting for Kelly or Roger though. Ali and Mark HAVE to be past their goal weights by now, and I don't see what else they COULD lose. Roger deserves it; he has so much heart, but I want Kelly to win just because she could be the first woman! Can't wait for next week!

As I went for my morning walk today I passed by a small park. There were about 7 dogs there with their owners. I couldn't help but stand there and watch as two labs toussled with each other. Running around, ears flapping, big smiles on their faces...jumping on and nipping each other. They would fall down, roll around bat each other with their paws, then get up and chase each other. Before I knew it, I had been standing there watching for 10 minutes and I had to get to work. As I walked away I couldn't get those dogs out of my mind and the more I think about it, the more I realize that dogs have it all figured out. They know what the best parts of life are and enjoy them every day. I hope that we can all be a little more like them...living in and enjoying the moment, exploring the world around us and being completely devoted to the people we love.

**April Surprise Exercise 8**
~ Boxing is a great way to get your heart rate up and work your arms, back and abs all at the same time.
~ Stand with your legs about shoulder-width apart and sink down a little bit (about half way into a squat)
~ Tighten up your abs and keep them tight as you alternate punching straight forward with your right and left hands. Keep your 'hits' at shoulder level. Always keep a little bend in your elbow.
~ Try to keep this going for a minute. You'll feel the burn in your legs and get a great ab workout
~ If you want to try with a little more movement. Turn your body to the side and only jab with one hand, jumping forward a little with each punch and jumping back as you pull your arm in.
~ Try this for 1 minute. It really helps to put on a little music.

I want to thank you for your comment on my blog, it was great to hear your opinion. I'm glad that you enjoyed reading it. I'm really enjoying that book. I know what you mean about helping people, I love it too. Sometimes I take it a little too far and forget about myself too much, but I see what you mean. I'm sure you make a great volunteer, it's great that you take the time to do all that. I'm sure that whatever you want out of life you'll get it and be great at it. I hope you have a great day! Thanks again!

You are so right. It is the age old story of how a woman can get so caught up in the working part of life that she doesn't know what to do with herself after that part is over. Everyone needs to take a few steps back and ask what is really important. Most people would be surprised. My hubby already said if there is reincarnation, he wants to come back as my dog. (it is supposed to mean that I spoil him, and I do)!!!! LOL. Hugs!!!!!!

I agree with you 100%. We need to live for the moment. I just wrote a lot about that in my blog for today too. About a study we're going in my church. If you get a chance, you should check out my blog. I would love to be able to be as carefree as a dog. Unfortunetly there are aspects of life that we can't always over come. Like chores that have to get done, but we don't have to let them control our lives. There are a lot of things that we can not control. But we can control how we live our lives. Thanks for posting this, it makes me feel like there's other people out there thinking the same things as I do. I hope you have a great day! God Bless!

MTC - Day 9

Monday, April 07, 2008

Making the Cut is really kicking my butt. My legs are so sore and I'm not really sure if it's from the workout that I did this morning or the one from yesterday. Either way it hurts! But that's a good thing. It reminds me of the field hockey days when I'd have 3 hour practices, a one hour break and then another 2 hours. It was difficult and it was worth it. So is this. The weather here is pretty windy. It looks like it's not going to be nice this it has been the whole weekend. Yesterday I went to the library and got a book called Honeymoon by James Patterson. It was really good. If you're at all interested in mystery/thriller/romantic novels you'll like it. Back to work. I hope that everyone has a great day!

**April Surprise Exercises 6 and 7**
Butt Kicks (a great way to get your heart rate up!)
~ Stand with feet together, abs tight and run in place
~ Focus on bringing your heel up and trying to kick your butt
~ This is great for the hamstrings and glutes
~ Try for 30 seconds. If you want to really challenge yourself, go for a minute

Pendulum Lunge
~ Step forward with your left leg and lower into a lunge. Then step back together.
~ Now step back with your left leg and lower into a lunge. This counts as 1. Do 10 with this leg. Then switch to the right.
~ Lunges are great for your quads. This kind will also help with balance.
~ If you want to add a little extra challenge, hold dumbbells/water bottles in your hands while you do the lunges. This will make your legs work harder because of the added weight

Be careful not to push yourself to hard. Give your muscles a little break.
