Day 60 - Quarter Century Countdown

Monday, February 28, 2011

If I had to sum up today...it would be with a resounding Whoohoo! I stayed up pretty late last night to watch the Oscars so getting up this morning was a bit of a challenge. The plan was to run outside around 7am, but we all know that wasn't happening on such little sleep. About a year ago this would mean that I wouldn't run at all...I was firmly convinced that I couldn't to intense cardio except in the morning. Recently I found out that's not exactly true...I just can't eat for 4 hours before running. When I got home, it was 84 degrees out and sunny - hardly my ideal running weather. I'm more of a high 60's kind of girl. It was probably my hardest run yet, but I kept pushing myself and completed the whole thing. To top it off, it was a personal best :) To be honest I've been a little disappointed because I've been doing these runs in 48 minutes. Even though I completed this one in 46:45, I was concerned that my running speed has decreased so much since December. When I went home to map my run I found out that I was running 4.5 miles instead of the 4 miles I thought! So my time is actually exactly where I want it to be. Whoohoo!

My nutrition is pretty spot on as well. As of 8:30pm I'm at 990 calories which is under where I want to be. I'll probably have a few more snacks before bed to bring me closer to where I want to be. Overall I'm really proud of my first day.

Day 60:
- Calories burned: 1059
- Calories eaten: 1300
- Macro breakdown: 26.2P; 21.8F; 52C
- Deficit: -1699 calories

Getting ready for Day 60

Sunday, February 27, 2011

Tomorrow marks 60 days until my birthday and things are going really well. I'm working out more than I have been recently and ran 8 miles (in two days) last week. I forgot how much I love running and this week I'm going to put Spinning back in the mix too. On Friday I did my first serious weight training session since the new year began and I loved it. Going in the morning was amazing because the gym was almost empty allowing me to move through all of my exercises with ease. A lot of the guys here will take 5 minutes between sets so it takes forever for them to finish an exercise - preventing me from moving through my routine and throwing off my rhythm. It's just gym etiquette that you shouldn't take a long time between sets when people are waiting... anyway...I'm looking forward to kicking it up another notch this week. Can't wait to kick butt!

Weekly plan:
- consume 1400 calories daily (500 calorie deficit)
- burn 5000 exercise calories weekly (running, spinning, ZUMBA, lifting, walking)
- say bye bye to the Cookie Monster until after the birthday celebration :)

Killer workout

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Wow...who knew that a deck of cards could kick so much butt?? I got up bright and early at 6:30 this morning to tackle this next challenge in my journey. I haven't been getting to the gym to lift as often as I like...mostly due to the fact that tons of people are going due to new years resolutions and it's always overcrowded. Well, working out at home I have no excuses. I'm definitely a girl that loves her weights and lifting heavy so I was skeptical about not using weights in strength training. However, after reading about how Ryan Kwanten doesn't set foot in a gym, yet he looks like this...

Yowza!!

Kwanten focuses on running, hiking and body weight exercises to get his physique. Well...if he's willing to give it a try ;)

This morning I set out to do the primal deck of cards work out...and I did it! Well...most of it. Surprisingly, planks were the hardest part for me. I couldn't hold the pose for the 100 second intervals or the 120 second interval...but I kicked butt on the others. I think the fact that my 3rd and 4th exercises were 80 seconds and 70 seconds, back to back did me in. The pullups were assisted so they weren't as bad as if I were doing real ones...but still challenging. When I got towards the end of the deck, it was really difficult. I was yelling like those contestants on the Biggest Loser while holding the plank haha, but I did it! Whoohoo! Here are the stats...

In 38 minutes, I did 96 pushups, 96 assisted pullups, 96 squats and 960 seconds (minus probably about 100) of planks.

I was thinking about going for a long (6 mile) walk this afternoon, but I think it would be better to give myself a break. I have the tendency to over train and since I don't know what this workout will do to me, I'm going to take it easy today.

Hope everyone is having a great day! Remember, don't hesitate to challenge yourself to try some new foods, motivational techniques or workouts. You never know what will work for you!

Woohoo!!! Thank you for starting out my morning with that picture :D

I will have to try the deck of cards while I'm traveling in April - sounds like a good routine for a hotel room. I won't have a pullup bar though; I wonder what else could be subbed for that exercise... maybe lunges or something? Anyway, it DOES sound killer! Did you wear your HRM?

I've been taking Nica for longer walks now that it's been warmish, and I'm really starting to enjoy those long, meandering migrations!

Kettlebells for me today! :)

Going strong

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Today is Day 4 and I'm going strong with my Primal lifestyle. I've been walking as much as possible - always getting over 11,000 steps per day. My eating is great - I just had an amazingly delicious lunch of tilapia and asparagus. The only down side is that I haven't been able to exercise as intensely as I usually do. When I tried to get up this morning to spin I was just too tired. It's probably my body transitioning from running on carbs to running on fat. Sure, I went back to sleep, but I when I got up I did ZUMBA and went for an hour long walk. I've learned that the key to success is not getting down on yourself when things don't go as planned. When we hit a set back, don't see it as a failure - see it as an opportunity to try something new.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to try a primal deck of cards workout. Each suit is either planks, assisted pullups, pushups or squats. Whatever number you flip over is the number you do - face cards are 10 and Aces are 12. For planks you add a zero to the number and that's how many seconds of the plank you have to do. It's going to be tough, but I know I can do it. I'm going to do the whole thing for time.

Have a great day everyone and remember, Train Hard - Expect Success!
