Happy Easter to those that celebrate the day!

I had my 2nd "paid" meeting with my holistic health provider last Thursday. My insides seem to be healing - my recovery rate is improving. I had a bad back spasm when I was trying to get up off her table, I'm glad I was there when it happened - she was able to massage it out. She massaged pretty hard, tho - I was very sore in the kidney area the next day, too! Since she felt the spasms in my back, she's going to do a full chiropractic exam next week.

The paleo lifestyle that she's set for me was going very well until the Easter candy showed up today! I just COULD NOT RESIST the malted eggs and the jelly beans! shame on me! Oh well... more work to do during the week, I guess!

    Hope your treatments continue to give you increased relief and decreased pain each time! When will you eat candy next? Don't beat yourself up for the holiday treat. It'll come off in a week or two, maybe less!

    Re: the candy. I imagine the cavemen did not just walk past beehives. Not without a little damage to the hive, some stings, and some sticky smiles. Glad to hear you're getting better!

First day - Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Grain Free.... at least not TASTE-free!

Today is my first day of following my doctor's plan of being gluten free, dairy free and grain free. I am trying this for 2-3 weeks to see if my metabolism will start. According to my Heart Rate Variability test, I have almost a non-existent recovery metabolism. That means that the time between heartbeats is very low. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_rate_var

After I've been "free" for 2-3 weeks, she is going to start adding some things back in to my diet to see how my body responds, similar to introducing foods to a newborn - you try one (and only) one thing new for a few days, see what the response is, then add other items. If the reaction is bad, you cut it out and start something else.

I also will be going in to her office once a week for an accupressure (and part massage) treatment, also in an effort to kick-start my adrenal and thyroid to act the way they should. My first treatment was last Friday. It was interesting... not painful at all, but I did feel some "pressure" at some of the points she was focusing on.

The really tough part for me is that she does NOT want me to get my heart rate elevated with exercise. Exercise stimulates cortisol, and that's what I'm trying to avoid!

    I too am a firm believer in acupuncture. It helped me get through about 5 years of severe degenerative arthritis pain as well as some relief from fibromyalgia. I think you'll feel the difference as you get into it.

Good luck with your treatment plan and I hope it answers some questions for you.

    I am a firm believer in acupressure, acupuncture and massage! What kind of doctor are you seeing? This sounds interesting. Are you allowed to do yoga? Yoga will count toward your air miles and I did 62 minutes yesterday and burned 207 calories. My heart rate was never up! Good luck and do keep us posted!

    Good luck with everything! If you need recipe ideas, I have tons of Paleo stuffed Pinned on Pinterest (www.pinterest.com/thechickenscoop/ - I have an "Eats - Paleo" board and a "Whole30" board). Maybe you can take walks and lift weights for exercise?

Holistic Health Provider - treatment plan

So, today I had my (free) consultation with a Holistic Health Provider. My son recommended her because she is in his BNI group (Business Networking). I had previously sent her my blood test results from this January. She tested a urine sample, and did an assessment. Interesting to note that my blood pressure was higher laying down than it was standing up (that is opposite of the norm). 160/90 laying down and 140/85 standing up! and I'm on 3 BP meds, too - taken them faithfully for 5+ years!

She said had a gauge of my metabolism as it relates to stress. Picture a half circle. The "regular, everyday" stress should be below the 90 degree level - mine was a bit below that -- so that was all good. Then there is the "recovery" side... it should be at about the 160-170 degree mark... mine was at about 45 degrees.... which means I'm holding stress in my body, which causes the thyroid and adrenal to overwork and/or shut down.

So she is putting me on a 6 week nutrition and exercise program, with weekly visits for accupressure on the adrenal and thyroid to try to stimulate both of them to heal themselves.

The nutrition part consists mainly of cutting out dairy and all grains, ensuring the correct amount of protein (but no soy). Lots of veggies, 1-2 servings of fruit, plenty of water. Proteins can be lean white or red meat and fish (depending on how my body reacts). This is for the first 2-3 weeks - after that, we'll see what we can perhaps add back in - in small doses.

Since exercise can sometimes stall the metabolism, exercise is supposed to be more on the moderate than intense - walking, strength training. Limit running and heavy cardio.

Of course, I didn't take really good notes, so I'm still kinda fuzzy on all the details. I have the nutrition and exercise plan to start - going to try to set that all up for my Friday appointment for my first accupressure. Then I can have her go over the nutrition plan I've set up so I can shop and prep for it this weekend.

Unofficial net time was 42:07. Not my best effort, but not my worst. I'm pleased with the results, especially since I didn't train at all!

5% Challenge - Week 1 results

So, 5% of my weight in 10 weeks is approx 1.25 lbs/week. I have a digital scale that weighs in 0.1 lb increments... go figure, eh?

Week 1 on the challenge is over - weigh in is posted. 1.1 lb lost. Behind pace, but not by much! I ate out 5 time last week (which is a LOT for me!) - made good choices almost every single time, but I logged all the food I could, and had to guess on some.

Exercise wasn't as good as it should have been. I was supposed to go to the gym 3x week, but I only made it twice. Will have to work on that this week!

Water was very good - got my 8 glasses every single day!

    Ah, the real LIFE world! Sounds to me like you did pretty good. One thing about the Challenge for me is that 5% is a guideline. I'm happy as long as I keep moving forward.
