Unrealistic expectations

Monday, February 18, 2013

I know I've had some health issues over the last 18 months but I've come to the realisation that part of the reason I put weight back on is because I didn't like how my body looked after I lost the weight. I think primarily because my expectations of what I would look like were unrealistic. They didn't include excess skin. My vision of what I was going to look like was of when I was 14 and my skin had the elasticity which would have allowed it to return to "normal".

I accept now that that will not happen and I will probably need further surgery to deal with it. In the meantime I can disguise it by wearing the right type of clothes to help me feel better about myself and give me the motivation to reach my final goal.

I will not allow my BED to get the better of me. I know it's still there lurking in the background and that I will probably have to keep a tight rein on it and track regularly for the rest of my life or it just gets out of control which triggers a depression that just makes me eat more. When I get there maintainance is going to be just as hard as losing it in the first place.

Wow!

Friday, February 15, 2013

Well, after a false start and my usual bout of SADs, it took a little while for me to get back into the swing of tracking and sticking to my calorie range but I have succeeded and am pleased to say I've now lost 9.7lbs since 2nd January. I'm feeling much better about myself as a result and I'm not finding it too hard to stick to at the moment.

I plan to start getting back into some physical activity from Monday, just a gradual increase in stationary cycling until I can manage 10 minutes everyday and then I will add in some strength exercises.

New beginnings

Tuesday, May 01, 2012

Well, the last year has been a tough one. With the constant job application rejections I've been feeling very down so my weight has gradually crept back up due to my comfort eating too many biscuits and hot-cross buns.

However, that's over now, I've drawn a line under it and I'm back tracking my nutritian and fitness. I plan to track my food intake every day for a couple of months and then once or twice a week to keep myself on track and get rid of those bad habits I've reacquired. I will be tracking my fitness considerably longer because if I don't I tend to slack and I'm also doing a streak in sparkguys 10 minute fitness club so I need to keep it going.

I had my CT Score and angiogram a couple of weeks ago. I haven't had the results yet but I feel fine so unless I'm told otherwise I will be carry on exercising. My echo-cardiogram was normal but obviously if I get dizzy or short of breath I'll let my doctor know.

Chair exercises

Monday, April 09, 2012

It's really hard to find aerobic chair exercises on DVD over here in the UK but I've finally got my hands on a copy of Jodi Stolove's sit down & tone up encore.

It's a moderately paced seated aerobics routine using light weights and lasts about 20 minutes. The most difficult part I find is keeping my back straight and my abs pulled in plus getting into the rhythm. LOL.

I did the routine for the first time the other day without too much difficulty... you can modify the exercises to your ability level and leave out the weights to begin with. I found it very useful.

I've also downloaded some seated exercises from youtube, converted them to windows media files and have burnt them all to a disc so I can use those as well. I will be trying them out soon. There are plenty of exercises to be found there... the best thing to do is watch them and when you find something you like then save it to use for later. Sparkpeople now also do some more aerobic seated routines which are very useful.

Other DVDs I have include salsa chair dancing, which I can do, and bellydance which I find very difficult because of the hip movements. Also Leanne's Chair Workout by a disabled young lady for the disabled which is very good.

I'm always on the lookout for new routines so that I don't get bored as that's when my exercise routine lapses. I also tend to go for short routines up to 20 minutes maximum as they are easiest to fit into my daily routine. emoticon

Thanks for the resources! There are resources on Spark People for limited mobility. Go to Healthy Lifestyle and the Lifestyle Resources, scroll down the list of Lifestyle Centers and you will find one for Limited Mobility. There are videos there in addition to some great articles.

On you main SP page click on Healthy Lifestyle then Fitness. Scroll down and click on Workout Videos.

there you will find:

11-Minute Chair Cardio Workout
12-Minute Seated Core Workout
9-Minute Seated Arm and Shoulder Workout
20-Minute Resistance Band Workout

If you click on the video it will take you to Youtube and then if you download the youtube downloader you can download the videos onto your PC and convert them to a different format.

Personally I convert to windows media and burn them onto DVDs so I don't need to connect to the internet and can just play them on my laptop when I want to do the workout.

I hope this helps.

there are lots of videos on youtube try searching for anything under seated exercise, senior workout, or chair aerobics... apparently we've all got to be old to need to sit down while exercising. LOL!

    Hello,
I enjoyed reading your blog as I too need to find chair exercise.

I have found I can lie on my back on a pilates machine and run/walk on the springboard but I need more than that.

I have looked and looked on SP to find chair exercises and have not found any. Could you share with me where you found them?

I'm going to try youtube due to your suggestion and see what I can find there.

Thanks,
Bernie

Ho hum

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

I had to stop my hydrotherapy sessions following a trip to ER complaining of strange chest pains. I was kept in overnight and investigated for possible heart attack, however they could find no evidence for that and sent me home with an appointment for an ECG. That was normal but slow(46) although at the moment no-one seems to know why it's so slow but it has been for the last 18 months or so since it was picked up at my annual post GBP checkup. So now I have to go for an echo, calcium score and possible CT angiography, which may lead to an angiogram. I just want the pains to go away...

Hydrotherapy is a type of physiotherapy carried out in a special pool at the hospital and supervised by the physiotherapists (physical therapists I think you call them in the US). The exercises are designed to help specific problems and conditions such as osteoarthritis which I have and use the water as resistance.

On land I can't walk without crutches, but in water up to my chest I can walk across the pool without support. This is because when the water is that deep you only have 15% of your body weight on your feet as the water supports you. I think it was beginning to help my gait and it was brilliant to walk without support for the first time in 9 years. I plan to go back when all this is sorted out.

I understand what you are going through. I myself am on a heart monitor this month. The blippin thing has been going off all day today which could account for why I feel so lousy. Hope you get to feeling better soon!
