I got a call from the vet this morning. Huey's blood work has come back. It all looks normal except he has kidney disease. She said it is not unusual for a cat his age. She said it is moderate not severe and thinks we can control it with a prescription diet and giving him fluids.
It is amazing because one thing I said I would never do was keep an animal alive with giving them IV Fluids at home because I always felt that that was not giving them a quality of life. But, as I watch him, he is playing and eating so I know that his life is not over and these fluids will help him not hurt him. He has quality in his life and this will just help to maintain that quality. She said he could survive years with this, but to be prepared that one day he will just go into renal failure and there will be no warning.
I remember this happened with a cat I had years ago. Over night, he went from 10 lbs to 5 lbs. By the time we got him to animal emergency, he was already in renal failure. I have had Huey since he was 6 weeks old and, if this is what he needs, this is what he will get. We are going this afternoon to learn how to do this iv thing.
At first, my husband wasn't thrilled..he doesn't like needles...but I pointed out that I have to take my medication for colitis everyday and he has to take medication for colesterol and this is Huey's medication and we owe it to him for all he has done for us.
Update: We learned to give the fluids. Not well, but we are working on it. We put Huey on a special food that they were worried he wouldn't like. He is chowing. He is just a wonderful cat! I will check on the ulcers. I know the feeling.
