Thyroids?

Monday, April 25, 2011

Hello again everyone. For those of you who do not already know, I am back in Florida now. So I went and registered with the MCHD. Upon one of my visits they had me schedule a fasting Bloodwork. Then I went in for my periodic EKG. Then I was scheduled for the appointment to advise me of results. The heart is another issue for another blog. This blog is for my Thyroid.
Now to the point. In the 3 years I was doing bloodwork and getting medical treatment in Iowa, the doctors kept telling me to lose weight. Now I found out at my followup that they detected in my blood work that I have an overactive Thyroid. I just looked at the nurse in dismay. "I have a what?" I said. Then she repeated herself. I asked "So what is there to do about it?" and she replied with Nuclear MRI and an Ultrasound to help determine why you have one. She said that there was no reason that they could tell for it to be that way and none of my meds should have triggered it. She explained that it releases important chemicals into my body and it was malfunctioning. She wrote me a script I cannot afford ($185.00/mo) and awaiting prescription assistance request. She said in the meantime to take 1000mg fish oil 2 times a day.
Now it is today and I went for my first of two doctor visits for my MRI and I did my ultra sound today. When the doctor I went to asked me about symptoms I was without answers. I explained to him that the only thing I was told was something about the important chemicals and take fishoil tabs. So he went through a list of symptoms. ANd before anyone even suggests that I should have taken the initiative to look it up, let me remind you that doctors and nurses have a responsibility to their patients. I should have been informed of all things to expect. Now with that said, I was totally surprised to find out that Weight Gain and an inability to lose weight was a symptom of an Overactive Thyroid. I looked at the doctor and said "So the fact that I am dieting and exercising without any results of weight loss is due to this?" His reply was yes. So in essence, the doctors have me dieting to lose weight when I cannot lose it. So now I understand why I can't get out of the 250 range anymore. I can also expect a major increase if things get worse and if I cannot afford proper medication and treatment. emoticon emoticon

UPDATE 04/26/2011: I am going back to the doctor on Monday. I am going to have to talk to her about my Thyroid condition. I thought she told me I have a hyperthyroidism, not an hypothyroidism. I have been reading up today and every article and medical review I can locate says the hyperthyroidism will lose weight and hypothyroidism will gain. The specialist I saw today said that sleep disorder, weight gain, lump in my throat, nervousness, etc. were symptoms of my condition and would only worsen if not treated.

A NEW YEAR AHEAD

Wednesday, January 05, 2011

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are 5 days into our NEW YEAR, HAPPY 2011.

For many of us this means new resolutions and new goals. I for one will be doing both. I did not meet my goals for last year. In fact I actually gained about 15 pounds in 2010. I am happy though because I did not go back to 270 pounds which is where I was when I started SP. I am only up to 254 pounds and I am positive that I can lose atleast 30 pounds this year which is only 2.5 pounds per month.

I no longer have my P90X. I had to leave it behind when I left Iowa. So this year I will be looking into a health club and doing my pushups, situps, and other home exercises. I will also have to get back to eating more fresh prepared foods and less fast foods and less frozen meals. I did this once before and I know I can do it again. When I gave up fast foods in July of 2009, I lost 18 pounds by years end.

I feel that my home life for 2010 was a lot of the reason I gained weight. Now I am back in Florida and still depressed. I know that once I get back to work and re-establish my new home I will be happy again and I will be able to control my eating better.

I believe that my weight is not caused by amount of eating I did, but rather by the types of food I was eating. In fact I am actually eating less but also less healthier.

I hope that all of you who did not meet your goals in 2010 will NOT give up. Living unhealthy is much easier for us because we are used to it. We have to change our way of thinking and that is the difficult part. People are creatures of habit and habits are hard to break. We as people also tend to look for our comfort zone in bad times and for many of us that is unhealthy foods. All of us can and will succeed. Be patient and keep your spirits up. It will happen.

Chicken Stew

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Here is a recipe I just did for chicken and dumplings last night. I love C&D but because of the sodium I could not eat it. Now that my BP is under control I decided to try it again but with less sodium. It is lower in sodium but still not sodium friendly. This turned out really good and I want to share since my recipe book is set to private.
Please comment on the recipe if you try it.

It is time consuming to make. Can be cooked in slow cooker if desired. I do not recommend cooking dumpling i a slow cooker(crockpot).

H2O and You!!

Sunday, January 17, 2010

I was reading a post with the following link.
www.sparkpeople.com/community/ask_th
e_experts.asp?q=47

I personally found this to be very interesting. For starters we consume plain water(Good ol` H2O) for the benefit of not adding other chemicals to the body. In addition to being fat free, calorie free, carbohydrate free, sodium free, etc.. it also cleanses the system of impurities. So how can we get the benefits of drinking 8 - 8oz glasses of water when we are using drinks filled with the impurities to cleanse the impurities and thus increasing weight loss. When I count my water I count just water. According to this article I can drink anything I want that has water in it and that includes sodas. I see no health benefit from drinking impure beverages to cleanse impurities from my body. I see no logical way to drink beverages filled with calories and sodium to lose weight.
This is just my personal thought and opinion on the matter. I know we all are on this site for different reasons but as for me, I am here to live healthier and lose weight. FIlling my body with needless chemicals won't do that. For people who say "I can't drink plain water" you are wrong. It's not that you can't, it is that you WON'T drink it. Don't confuse the 2 words. They do not mean the same thing. If you truly have a desire to change and be healthier, then you must CHANGE certain things in your life which includes drinking more plain water. Not all bottle water is plain water either. If you read the label and the ingredients have anything other than just Water in the ingredients then it is not water. It is a distorted version of water.

Great 411 on the H20. And the 8oz recommendations is for the average joe, more is needed based on your weight and exercise. Who knew that just how much water you need to drink would be like rocket science. See this link:

when thirsty nothing tasts as good as a glas of water. But I love coffee and I do drink lots of it. The Italians give with every cup of coffee a glas of water. they do that for a good reason. So I never count coffee. But how about non-cafine herbteas?

I truly believe what you just said. So for the past 13 months I have mostly consumed pure tap water with about 5 mis-haps with hot chocolate...I just want to eat healthier and loose weight, eventually becoming a vegetarian/vegan with in this year 2010. I will be 51 next month and have never been a vegetarian/vegan but I believe I can be. Thanks for this blog.
