OMG, I'm in the Spotlight!!!

Friday, June 13, 2008

Wow, what a wonderful surprise this morning to find out that I'm in the spotlight. I think it is way cool. What I am really hoping for is that I can, while I'm in the spotlight, I can encourage everyone to continue moving forward on their journey to a healthier life. As you can see, I have a long way to go, as I'm know alot of you do too. With the help of all our wonderful Spark friends, we can make that journey a wonderful time.

We are going to have our ups and downs along the way. The most important thing is to NEVER GIVE UP!!! Remember, we are working on a healthier lifestyle. It's not a diet. We don't have to give up anything that we don't want to. We just have to have them in moderation. We also have to learn to make healthier choices most of the time. We can do that!!! There is so much on Spark People to help us with this journey.

For years my mom "nagged" me to lose weight. She didn't want me to end up a diabetic like she was. I tried so many different diets along the way. Most of the time they didn't last and I gave up. My mom lost her battle with diabetes and heart disease in 2001. Five years later, I found out I was a diabetic. I was in shock. Even though I've been overweight my entire adult life, I was always healthy for the most part. I came home from the dr. and just sat in front of the computer in shock. I wanted to just sit there and cry, but I didn't. I got online and went to several diabetes websites and read everything I could. Even though my mom was diabetic for years and I thought I knew alot about diabetes, I was in for a shock. There was so much information I didn't know. That very day I cleaned out my cabinets and went grocery shopping for healthy foods. It was almost one month later when I found Spark People. I found so much support, motivation, and inspiration here.

I've received alot of help from my Spark friends. There were days I didn't want to exercise or eat healthy, but my friends encouraged me to continue. I still have cheat days from time to time, but I don't let them drag me down. I get right back on track the next day. I know that if I want to get off my diabetes medications, I have to limit those cheat days to once in a blue moon. I need to focus on eating healthy and exercising.

One thing that has really helped me along the way is to support and encourage all of my Spark friends. I help to motivate myself by giving support and encouragement every day to all my Spark friends. I really hate to see anyone upset or down, even though I get that way myself from time to time. So I try to encourage them and get them out of their blue mood. Who said that getting healthy and losing weight was going to be easy??? Definitely not me or I'm sure you. It takes alot of hard work, but who said we can't have fun along the way. So let's remember to have some fun today.

Join Spark teams!! Have fun with your Spark friends!! Encourage, support, motivate, and inspire yourself and your friends along the way. Remember, NEVER GIVE UP!!! We can do it!!!! Enjoy your day and don't forget to make it healthy and active!!!!

Thank you to Spark People and all my wonderful Spark friends for being here for me!!!

Hugs,

Lainie

Love your page, it's got such a calming feel to it.

I'm right beside you, Lainie. I have about 140 pounds to lose. One of the most difficult things for me is the exercise. I walked on the treadmill for 5 minutes yesterday. Big whoop. I felt sorry for the treadmill, it seemed to be suffering so I stopped. I live in AZ, and it's HOT here. That means I can't really exercise outside this time of year. I need help! Tell me what you do to get your exercise in. I just find the whole exercise thing boring. I bought Dance Dance Revolution last year, that lasted about a week. I'm too embarrassed to go to the gym, this is a very small town and I'm just too ashamed of the shape I'm in. Any advice is welcome.

Congrats on being in the Spotlight, I missed it, but you've inspired me.

Lainie - I saw you "in the spotlight" this morning. I think it's the first day that I have gone to that page since I started using SP on 6/2, and what I found was an inspirational story that spoke to me! Coincidence? I think not!

I've joined your team, as you suggested in your email reply to me, and I hope that I too in time can help to inspire and motivate!

Keep up the good work!

You encouraged me to never give up, too. I will not give up and try to lose this weight, 40 pounds, the healthy way.

My thyroid is a little low, but I have no health problems other than being overweight.

I just read your blog. I wanted to congratulate you!! I just recently signed up a couple of days ago so I don't know many people yet. I suffer from a number of medical issues so I'm trying really hard to eat healthy also. I was going to the gym five days a week up until I had surgery and right now I can't. It is very difficult for me at times because I live alone and I have major depressive disorder and I get very lonely and have a lot of crying spells and it is harder now that I am home even more because of my surgery. I was forcing myself to go to the gym because that is what I have to do. I have excessive tiredness because of sleep apnea so it makes it hard to even get out of bed at all. I wish you lots of luck. I hope that we can keep in touch because I could use some positive people to get by. emoticon

What Surprised Me This Month

Wednesday, May 28, 2008

This month I have been working on getting in more walking with ultimately doing a 5K. Since I have more time on my hands with being unemployed, I have been doing my walking outside in the morning. Normally, my walking has been indoors, whether it was walking around the Call Center production floor or doing Walk Away the Pounds. So finally getting outside and doing my walking and feeling the difference has been very surprising. I didn't realize how much of a difference it is to walk outside. I have just been walking around the block. I'm walking on the street because my small neighborhood doesn't have sidewalks. I have been realling feeling the difference in my hips, legs, and knees. My first trip around the block was rough. After about a week, I was in alot of pain with my hips and knees mostly. So I had to take a little break and went back to walking indoors. Now, I switch back and forth. Hopefully, with time it will continue to get better. On Memorial Day, I walked around Warrior's Walk at Fort Stewart on sidewalks. Of course, I was going at a much slower pace, but I did notice that it is getting easier walking outside. Now, it seems I am having to deal with the hot temps. So I need to figure out if it will be better for me to walk in the morning or in the evening after the sun goes down.

You're doing great! I walk first thing in the morning. Not only is it cooler then, but it eliminates any hemming and hawing and excuses later in the day. I started out at 3/4 of a mile and I'm now up to 3 miles a day. Each day I try to add a bit more - a few steps add up! And it does get easier. Now I feel the strength in my muscles instead of my joints complaining. We can do this!

I love walking outdoors, it is very different like you said. Maybe you can switch it up, some days in the evening and some in the morning. It's all going to get easier as long as you keep up with it. In no time you will be breezing through that 5k.

I have been out walking the dog for the past few weeks and it feels great!! I always find that getting out there is the problem but once I am out, I just walk and walk and dont regreat it for a minute...I always feel so energized by the end of my walks and motivated to stay on track:)

I, too have been having knee problems...my one knee aches so bad but I am pushing through the pain ...and oddly enough the more i do, the better it is!!!

Keep it up!!! emoticon

Good for you Lanie! Do you have good walking shoes? I know Ihave bad kness and it makes all the difference. Don't forget to stretch when you get home. I have severe arthritis, so I feel for you. If you don't take meds for it, Tylenol Arthritis helped me a lot before I started on the perscription meds. Kepp up the good work Lanie, you can do it! Every pounds you go down, helps your joints out! Hugs, Lynn

What I'm looking forward to wearing...

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

The one thing that I miss wearing more than anything is jeans. I used to live in jeans, but I haven't worn jeans in over 16 years. My son doesn't ever remember me wearing jeans. He was a baby the last time I wore them. I have two pair of jeans hanging in my closet right now. One of them I can put on, but it takes alot to zip them up. When I do put them on, I feel so uncomfortable. So I'm working on losing another 10-15 lbs as my next mini goal, so that I can put those jeans on and not have to struggle to zip them. I want to feel comfortable in jeans again. I know I can do it. It just takes discipline and exercise, in other words alot of hard work. I will get there. I know I can do it.

My inspiration this week

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

As part of a challenge I'm on we are to blog what has inspired us this week. So throughout the day, I've thought about what has been inspiring me this week so far. I'm inspired today and every day by my Spark friends on all of my teams, from the person who walked around the block to the person who met a weight loss goal. Every time you walk around the block, it inspires me to walk around the block every day. For every weight loss goal you make, it encourages and inspires me to follow my exercise regime and food intake so that I can meet my next weight loss goal.

This morning I read about a Spark member who lost her life this week. I didn't know her, but I read responses from all her Spark friends and saw the admiration they had for her. So I visited her Spark Page and read her story. She was a great inspiration to everyone that she came in contact with. By reading her story and reading how she inspired her Spark friends, that has inspired me to continue on with my journey and meet all of my goals. May Jenna rest in peace and know that her legacy lives on in her family and friends.
