What's More Important: Work or Work-Out?

Wednesday, October 05, 2011

Today I overslept, and then I had to make a quick decision: what should suffer, work or work-out? And for the first time in my life I opted for work-OUT! Because ultimately my work will suffer without the work-out.
I got up and dragged my behind to the railroad tracks... I was 20 mins late for work, but I will make up for it because I feel terrific.
Have a great day!

I've learned (the hard way) that I have to book lunch hour off (and out of the office) so that I can get out and do something, and that's over and above whatever I do in the morning before work. Walk or run, it doesn't matter; just getting outside makes the rest of the day go so much better.

Only you can make that decision. Some people would get fired for being 20 minutes late, and in this economy that would not be good! But if you can get away with it and it doesn't happen all the time, go for it! As another friend of mine says, run run run! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I struggle with this every day! In the end, if I really feel the need to get out and run during the work day, I GO! Like you said, you're more productive at work if you get your workout in so ultimately everyone wins! Great choice!!

Way to go! I am having same dilemma, but cannot be late for work. Struggling to keep work-out in the forefront.

I would have done the same thing! When I opt for work or school instead of my work outs I get very cranky!

I am retired, but when I was working I would stop by the gym and work out on my way home. It is amazing how energizing it is when you think you are feeling too tired.

Runners run. It is all about balance and yes, sometimes being late and efficient is better than being on time and draggin your butt around the office.

Good running and be careful out there.

very true and profound statement, but I don't know if I would have opted to be late for work. I would get the workout during lunch or after work. I can definately appreciate your spunk. Good for you in getting your workout in

"ultimately my work will suffer without the work-out"

That is SO SO true!! I bet you will be WAY more productive today because you are focused and feeling happy! Those 20 minutes will be accounted for in the end!

Enjoy your day!

Jeff Galloway all the Way

Tuesday, October 04, 2011

Yesterday I ran the whole two miles. Today, because I was a bit tired, I runwalked -2 min/30 sec- and I felt infinitely better and... was FASTER.
Viva Jeff Galloway!

    That's awesome!!!!

I actually find that when I take walk breaks, I have more endurance/speed! There is NO way that I would have done as well in my marathon/second half-marathon if I had not taken walk breaks from the beginning! It's a wonderful method, both physically and most importantly for me, MENTALLY. It's daunting to think about running a long distance of time, but thinking "just 10 minutes and then I can walk again!" is so motivating!!

I ran, I ran, I ran

Thursday, September 29, 2011

I was utterly disgusted with myself, and therefore did not blog. But enough with the whining: I am back.
I ran my 4th day to the railroad track at 5 o'clock in the morning; proof enough for me that I am serious again.
Yesterday it was difficult, very DIFFICULT, and today it was raining, and I went. (I still go to the gym in the afternoon on most days, but that does not really count, it is so "cosmetic" compared to running in the heat and all.)
20 minutes of pain - and today it was not really all that bad - and I sleep at night and the day is a breeze: I love my students and even my colleagues! Yeah!

Inspirational Video

Yesterday I watched

Running the Sahara

3 guys running over 7 000 miles from the Atlantic in Senegal to the Red Sea in Egypt. 111 days of running. One of the men had only been running for two years prior to the expedition.
"I can run the two miles to the railroad track and back if he can run from the Atlantic to the Red Sea," and I did! (It was maybe equally hot - and humid, here, not in the Sahara - but instead of camels I saw pick-up trucks.

They felt exhausted when they arrived; I feel good!

Running every day for 111 days? Running EVERY DAY until Jan. 14? Now there is a thought!

PS. Thanks Anne for the kind post on my page; it makes all the difference!

I'm glad a little nudge got your inspired! :)

Like Amira said, this guy gave a presentation at our clinic, right as I was coming back from injury and doubting myself so much.

I figured that he ran through that, I could run 42.2 km, albeit really slow!

You can do it!!

Yeah! And I liked that the guys were from Canada (Oh, Canada!) the US and China.

I have GOT to watch that video!! The guy who'd only been running a couple of years, Ray Zahab, lives and runs in my area and came to speak at my marathon clinic. What an amazing story this guy had to tell!

Starting Over

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

I am getting ready, at present at least mentally, to start a new semester, and that always gives me a chance to look at my life and tweak it more in the right direction.

Here are a few steps I will take to make it better:

1. I will park as far away as I can.
2. I will never take the elevator (which is very old and slow anyway, and I am faster when I walk; my office is on the 4th floor)
3. I will not sit down during class but walk around the hall, as an added benefit it keeps the students on their toes.
4. Pack my lunch, every day.
5. I will deliver messages on campus in person and not call.
6. Remember the water bottle.
7. Go to the gym every day straight after work, and remember it is better to spend an hour in the gym than an hour tossing and turning waiting for sleep at night.
8. Get 8 hours of sleep.
9. Look at cookies and other sugar traps as poison.
10. I will not buy junk food. (No potato chips at the supermarket, not even on Saturday when I think I "deserve it.")
