This, that, and a few other things

Saturday, July 16, 2011

Goodness, I'm exhausted today. I'm still struggling with this knee, which makes mobility even more problematic than usual for me. I'm starting to stay hidden when I'm not working because it's humiliating to struggle to walk.

This afternoon I went to a co-worker's patio party. I had originally tried to beg off because of the problems with the knee, but he literally begged me to come. He said he'd keep the parking place closest to the back fence (the easiest path to the back patio) open for me and that he and his wife would help me all I needed. It was an internal struggle, but I finally went. They had a really good live band there (a local outfit called Hillside Fire) and some great food. My co-worker fixed my plate for me since the buffet was up a flight of stairs. He fed me so much, I'm not even eating dinner tonight! If I get munchy a little later I'll have some toast. I had thawed a steak for dinner tonight but I put it back in the fridge. I'm going to have a steak and eggs Sunday brunch tomorrow.

Right now I'm having a glass of wine while watching Throwdown With Bobby Flay ( emoticon) and working on a kid's sweater I'm knitting for charity. I suspect I might not be up past ten, if that late, tonight.

I have to improve my mobility somehow. I just don't know how to manage with this knee.

Good luck!

I agree with the chair exercises.. there are a lot you can do while sitting in a chair using your arms, legs, torso twists.. work up slowly but just keep moving..check out exercises for those with disabilities and you will find a lot.. hang in there.. it just takes time.. emoticon emoticon

I am sorry about your knee. I'm sure you've had lots of suggestions, but I suggest you look at CHAIR YOGA or CHAIR TAI CHI. You can google it and get some free videos online that show you how to do a lot of the movements, while sitting in a chair. It will help with your core and upper body strength.

I know the heat is very demotivating, but be positive, because good times will come again.

It's good that you got out and enjoyed yourself, Mary. You know me, I'd say water aerobics or just plain walking in water with a noodle for support. If you can find a pool that's reasonable or even check into a program through your doctor. They might be able to write a prescription for therapy in water that Insurance will pay for.

I've been rehabbing in my pool at home from a disk injury (which hurts more in my leg and knee than my back). It's so much easier than doing so on land.

I take back my comment on the Pilates. I think that wouldn't work. What about water aerobics? I rehabilitated an injured ankle by doing water aerobics workouts in college. You might be able to find a reasonably-priced class at the local YMCA/YWCA.

Glad to hear you went to the barbecue and had a good time. We need those GOOD and uplifting times as much as we need to continue on our journeys toward better health. Those times refill us spiritually, they uplift us, and remind us of how alive we are in spite of the things that bring us down sometimes or on a daily basis.

I can sure relate to not wanting to go out because of the knee thing. I have turned into a real hermit! It is so embarrassing to go out when you can barely move. But the only thing that has come of my self-imposed isolation is a battle with depression and the worsening of my ability to breathe when I walk.

I don't wish any of those things on you.

Are the problems with your knee due to an injury, and whether it might get better, or a progressive disease, such as arthritis? Mine have arthritis, which doesn't sound that bad, but boy-o-boy, can it stop me from walking!

I am glad your co-worker and his wife were so helpful, but I know from experience that it is no fun to be waited on everywhere you go. It gets embarrassing.

I just wanted to say that I feel for you, and I know how it is.

I'm sorry that your knee is causing you problems. I know that money is tight right now; do you have insurance with your job? Have you done a little webMD research? Maybe you can figure out what the problem might be and try to help it out a little without exacerbating the problem.

I'm glad that your meeting with your boss ended up okay. At least it cleared the air so work won't be as stressful (I know I don't enjoy going to work when I have issues with my bosses).

I'm also glad you went to your co-worker's party. He and his wife were very nice to make you comfortable. Please make sure you get out, even though you're feeling self conscious about the knee - it's an injury, and we've all had our fair share. I know first hand how easy it is to shut yourself out and then end up a little depressed, and I'd hate to see that happen to you.

Stay strong!!!

The good and the not-so-good

Friday, July 15, 2011

I am SO glad this week is over!

Okay, so I got the water bill paid. But I'm still p****d at building management's tactics. The previous owners used to fold notices like these before putting them on our doors. The new owners stick them up for the entire complex to see, complete with red block lettering. They're little better than bullies. I hope the complex gets sold again soon (It's been sold twice in the two years I've lived here).

I had the little "chat" with the boss yesterday. I don't deny there have been problems, so I'm not surprised this happened. We've reached detente, which is good. She's very kind at heart and I don't like feeling alienated from her (especially when we're stuck with each other five days a week).

The knee is better but still maddeningly stiff. I'm supposed to go to a patio party tomorrow, and I suppose if I go I'll have to take my walker (and I suppose it would be good for me to go). I just hate how difficult walking has been lately.

So I ordered the groceries for the pay period. I ordered some things I shouldn't have (wine in particular), but at least I didn't order bacon, breakfast sausage or limeade, which I normally would have. I also ordered a fair amount of fruit. I love stone fruits, and they're in season right now.

I'm exhausted. I hope I get a sound sleep tonight.

Just try your best to track it all and eat everything in moderation. Last night I had wine, but I knew that I would probably be eating calorically-higher food for supper because we were having guest over so I was very careful about what I ate earlier in the day so I would have some leeway at night with my calorie range. Also, I walked for 2 hours to burn off calories regardless of how many I ate in the evening. It sounds like your knee is giving you a lot of trouble. Can you do exercises from a chair? I've seen on t.v. sometimes they have a lady doing modified exercises for those who have difficulty with mobility. I'm just wondering if that might be an option for you when you can't walk far. Also, a Pilates video would be great if you can manage to get on the floor, but I don't know if that is an option.

Sorry to hear about the landlord situation. Stuff like that can really affect our mood which can affect our eating. I hope you have a better weekend.

Glad that your week ended better than it started and I agree with you about your complex managers tactics. How rude to post notices on people's doors without at least folding them over so others can't read them. Although I'd like to know why they aren't put under the doors or if your doors have them through the mail slot.

I would have thought that the way they display your bills is a breach of privacy! Do the new owners still have the same people doing the work? Either way, there isn't any reason why it couldn't have been attached to you door in a more private manner! I would be inclined to chat amongst other tenants (do you have a committee?) and together put it to the new owners that this isn't an appropriate way to conduct their business. There's nothing like the safety of a committee!

Miserable week

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

First it was the knee injury. Then my boss is ticked off at me (we're supposed to have a "chat" tomorrow). And to top it off, I come home to a notice from the landlord that my utility payment is late and I have until Friday to pay up or be thrown out (luckily I'll be able to pay it on Friday).

I'm very discouraged. I just can't catch a break for anything.

Another recipe dream

Sunday, July 10, 2011

Last night my sleep was pretty restless due to the sore knee. During one spurt where I was actually able to sleep, I dreamed about a dish I've loved since childhood. My parents used to make spaghetti with white clam sauce. It involved canned minced clams with their broth, white wine, olive oil, butter, scallions, garlic and mushrooms over spaghetti. Later as an adult I swapped out canned whole baby clams for the minced. But the basics remained the same: saute the garlic, mushrooms and scallions in the butter and olive oil. Add the claim juice and simmer just until the mushrooms are cooked. Cook the pasta and, when draining it, add the claims to the sauce to just heat them (don't cook them or they'll get tough). Put the sauce over the pasta and serve.

Many years ago at a seafood house on the Monterey wharf in Monterey, CA, I had the clam spaghetti, but the clams were still in their shells! I have to admit (and this probably makes me weird), I love the look of shellfish in their shells on my plate.

In last night's dream I was making the same dish but using fresh clams in the shell. It was a VERY detailed dream, right down to the 20-minute bath in water and cornmeal I always give live shellfish to clean out the grit. But even in the dream I was thinking, what if I put a pinch of saffron in? And maybe skipped the pasta and put the clams and sauce in a big bowl and had them with a hunk of baguette, like they'd do in France?

Hmmm...

    OK, now THAT'S a dream!
And I love a big old bowl of clams or mussels gently simmered in white wine, broth, garlic, shallots and finished with lemon and butter and a big hunk of baguette - just like they do in France and here in Canada too!

Great dream, Mary! Wish I could eat shellfish (I have an allergy). I always think about how much I would enjoy picking the meat out of the shells and you're right, in the shells looks much more appetizing!

Oh, #%&*!!!

Saturday, July 09, 2011

Right now I'm so frustrated I can't see right. Early this morning I got up to use the bathroom. When I was getting back into bed, I heard a loud crack in the back of my right knee. I've had this before (it was the left side last year). So for at least a day or two getting up and down is a five-minute ordeal, and I don't dare try to walk much of anywhere without my walker. I've taken a high-powered Motrin, but it's not helping much.

I wanted to get some things done today, and I sure didn't want to spend the day (and possibly the weekend) just trying to stand up and sit down!

Sorry to hear iot hasn`t gotten any better hon. I`ve had to sit with mine elevated at different times today as well. I`ve been rubbing mine up with my PAIN-A-TRATE, taking Tylenol for muscle and body and icing it. It`s not paining to day but just a steady pressure ache. I think most of it right now is from the shift in weather. It`s become cooler and damp out so have stayed in doors.
I`ve had x-rays taken but no results back yet.
