Skipped my long run this weekend

Monday, August 08, 2011

All great intentions, but woke with a headache, a sore throat and ears... so no run for me today. The headache I think is tied to my sore back muscles, so I've been working on stretching those out today... I have a massage scheduled on Saturday, so hope I can last until then without too much pain. As for the sore throat, I've been drinking tea and smoothies today... the Banana soft serve (frozen banana, cocoa & almond milk) was perfect for desert, felt wonderful on my throatd

No long run until next weekend. Fitness this week is with the kids... hopefully I can run up and down the driveway at some point, while they play outside... and we'll walk on the beach...

Next weekends plan
- Saturday: Long run, quick shower, followed by a massage by my favourite massage therapist!
- Sunday: Short run & Kayak

Always best to give yourself a bit of a break when you're fighting a bug. I hope you feel better soon!

I agree with the previous comment. In October I was all set to run/walk my first 5K, and I came down with bronchitis two days before. I did not realize at the time what it was, but I was exhausted and sweating. Not to mention that it was chilly on the day of the race. I still haven't done it. Another time.

Please take care of yourself. Hope you are feeling better!!!

Countdown to Disneyland Half Marathon

Wednesday, August 03, 2011

The countdown is ON! Only 1 month until we head to Disneyland... and it'll be different this time, as its just my husband and I! We haven't gone away without the kids - ever... our last vacation (just the two of us) was 11 years ago...

We will leave friday -- early morning -- have Saturday in Disneyland. The Half Marathon on Sunday, and fly home Monday. The kids start back to school on Tuesday!

The current plan is my mom will watch the kids while we are away. I hope everything will work out. My stepfather is currently scheduled for a triple bypass on August 15th. So if all is going well, then they'll be able to look after the kids. If not, I guess we are scrambling to find someone (or many someone's) to look after the kids....

So tomorrow I will run, after a week off from running, due to headaches, travel and exhaustion!

Not much time for exercise

Friday, July 29, 2011

This week has been crazy... lots of "family"! Sunday I took the kids to my mom's for a sleepover... Monday we went out for dinner as a family (for my brother's birthday), Tuesday we went out for lunch with my cousin and his family for lunch (this one wasn't planned...they were only in town for the day). Wednesday morning my dad, and Aunt & Uncle from out of town came by for tea... and then today my brother borrowed our truck to move some furniture, and then we took my Gramma out for lunch! Wow! What a week.

So how did I fit exercise in... Sunday my husband and I went for a bike ride. Monday I went for a bike ride... Tuesday I ran before my husband left for work. Yesterday I went to a yoga class in the park with a friend (her friend is a new instructor). And tonight my son and I headed out on a bike ride... I don't have photos of us riding - Can't take photos and ride, my new phone might fall!

Here are some photos of him play at the outdoor gym...

(oops finger in the way... new phone = new camera)

And my daughter has been getting ready to dance 2 new dances at the Highland Games this weekend!

This weekend we are headed to our last highland games for the year.... My older daughter is competing at the intermediate level for the first time, and my son will be competing with his band. And then we'll do some shopping!

Purchases tonight include a hydration belt... when looking for a new watch strap... and then ordering a new watch strap online! Ready for vacation next week (and my next long run)

You are keeping busy! All that time with the family sounds like fun, though. Good luck to your kids on their competitions this weekend!

A family bike ride

Sunday, July 24, 2011

Sorry no photos... Forgot the camera AGAIN...

Tonight after dinner we took the kids to a local trail - its paved to let them cycle for a bit. Its amazing how much their confidence has boosted this year. I walked and everyone else was on their bike... soon I'm going to need to invest in a bike helmet so I can take out my brother's bike (as I don't have my own...)

My son (10) is now riding quite comfortably. I still don't think he's ready to ride on the road, but trails and paths he's good at... He's moved up to a bike with gears and doing well at it. According to my husband who biked with him, he was setting a good pace.

My older daughter (8) is still riding with some fear, but doing much better on a bigger bike. She is slower than her brother, but I'm sure she'll soon catch up as she gains some confidence.

My youngest daughter (5) is still using training wheels and is scared of going fast, and won't pedal all that fast unless I'm touching either her or the bike. Note: I only have to be touching, as in a light touch... so its not too bad. I figure I was setting a 12min/km pace... and we did 3km tonight!

The weather has finally warmed up here, so it was very pleasant out tonight.

Fantastic! The family that rides together ... stays healthy together. (Couldn't find a great word to rhyme with rides).

Enjoy the weather!

Wow, does that ever take me back! I am sure that you and Bill are instilling in your children a lifetime of fitness. My children are grown but as they grew we bought bike after bike. Two of my sons bike to work. My 21 year-old daughter zooms all over the place on her bike on her college campus. She lived in france for a year and her only mode of transportation was a bike. (If you think bikes are pricey here, you should see what they go for in France!)

Have fun with your kids. They grow up so quickly.

Your statement about the camera made me LOL. I always forget the camera and when I do have it, I forget to use it. What a great time everyone had and there is nothing better than family time!

"Rest" Day... OK so I cut the front yard

Thursday, July 21, 2011

While I was away our lawnmower decided to stop working for my husband... (or maybe it just doesn't like him) I don't really know what happened to it, but he says it won't stay running... So I brought our "original" lawnmower back from the cabin. This poor underused lawnmower is an electric mower, with an 18" blade... was originally purchased for ME when I was in university to cut the lawn at my parents house -- I'm not even sure I was living at home when I demanded a new lawn mower... Growing up we always had an electric lawnmower, and so did my grandparents... in highschool I coaxed our lawnmower along, eventually combining parts from all 3 lawnmowers to make one work... then finally I only had 3 wheels that worked.

So now nearly 20 years later, I am using this lawnmower again. I remember why this was sent to the cabin...

emoticonit only has an 18" blade! Now this means it clogs up with wet grass easily
emoticonit requires a really LONG extension cord to reach the corners of the yard
emoticonit really isn't all that powerful (although I think it was near top of the line when my dad bought it -- it is 9Amps)
emoticonit has a side bag/discharge. I didn't use the bag today (not quite sure where that is) and so I had to watch that I didn't
emoticonour yard is HUGE, nearly 1/4 acre and mostly grass! (growing up our yard took me 30min MAX to cut... so it was MUCH smaller)

emoticonI only got the front done, and I still need to rake/bag the clippings.... It took 2 hours!

The only nice thing about this -- it is LIGHT, and so easy to take up the 3 steps in our back yard to put it away!!!

I think I'm dreaming of a new lawnmower... can I hold out to end of the season sales...

What a workout! Every time I mow lawn (which is frequently, since we have a 1 acre lot) I wonder why we spend so much time trying to get grass to grow where it doesn't want to grow, and cutting it when it grows too much, and pulling it when it shows up where we don't want it to be. emoticon

I've vowed to extend my perennial beds every year until I get to the point where I can park my mower by the curb for pickup! (I love that the advertisement in the corner of this page is for a lawnmower.)

Doesn't sound very restful, although as a kid I always felt very satisfied with myself after doing our lawns around home.

What a rest day you had! Check Craig's list for mowers needing a new home. You could get lucky.

I was looking at lawnmowers yesterday. I live in the mountains and mother nature takes care of our "yard". Unfortunately we have an infestation of Russian Thistles that are the size of trees! To cut down these bad boys I need a 200 HP mower! I found a gas mower at Home Depot for $149 that should do the trick.

Your lawnmower story is great. Electrical mowers are more expensive than gasoline powered mowers. Gas mowers are darn noisy. But I enjoy scaring the thistles with the sound of impending doom!

LOL! Our electric mower decided to die exactly on the day of the annual curbside pickup. We wheeled it out to the curb and literally minutes later a car stopped and it was popped into the trunk- somewhere it has found a new life. I'd say you got a real workout for sure.
