6 years of MAINTANING and I almost forgot about it!

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Well after 6 years I am still loving it all! My daughters are now 11 and 9 and my son turns 4 on the 30th of this month(November). I turn 40 on December 2nd so yet another date in my life.

New things in my life: I now sub for the core/spin class I have been taking for the past two years. Kinda fun to get paid to workout but they needed someone and I am glad to help. I teach at work some classes so teaching is not new for me but the added doing something physical with it is challenging and keeps me on my feet. Other new thing is at work we are finally restarting our Wellness Committee and I am leading it. Keeping it simple for now and just getting a good foundation built with the committee doing the work not just the leader. I am also part of a larger state group that helps us as well and is new this year as well.

Other than that just watching my kids grow up and trying to be there with them as they do things. My oldest plays basketball now and my 9 year old does theater. SO PROUD OF THEM!!! I still run and would like to get them into it if they want as well or anything else they would like to try.

My normal week for exercising is Monday off, Tuesday Run/Core/Spin/Swim Wednesday Lift/Run/Swim Thursday Lift/Run/Swim Friday off Saturday run 10-15 miles with my running group and Sunday Run/Core/Spin/Swim. May sound like allot but when I combo things I keep them shorter. Plus when I lift I do 30 minutes or less of cardio after and then get something to eat. But really I just do what I have time for and move things around as needed to fit my family's schedules and my own.

6 Years WOW and I am now at 225-230 which is what I want for my 6'6" frame and the muscle I have added back since way back then. Thanks to everyone and I am still around just not as much as I once was. I still think about you all and wonder how you are and like that FB and SP allow me to see for many of you.

This is my life now and I LOVE IT!

No gall stones or anything!

Saturday, October 20, 2012

So after all the testing and such found nothing wrong with me. Guessing it was the unripe apples I had eaten so much of for so long. They knocked out my digestive system in that it could not process much and the more complex the worse I felt. Feel great now and all is back to normal.

Just need to get back at my running which I never stopped but had cut back on. So missed some races but oh well it is fall and a great time to just run for fun!

Looking forward to November 19th my anniversary for maintaining now for 5 years!

I am glad all is well and that you are feeling better. If oatmeal caused your problem, could you have an allergy?

Great job on heading to 5 years. I am heading to 3 years in October.

Gallstones issues.

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Well about 8 weeks ago I started having abdomen issues and pain. But they were like none I had really had before with my IBS and such. Felt bloated, full and in pain. So thought I had just eaten something but ended up being so tired I took two days off from work. Then it kind of went away but my abs were swollen from then on. I was eating a ton of apple crisp at the time so i stopped for 6 days then had some and got sick again within the hour of eating it. So i thought it was the unripened apples I had picked early and stopped eating it.

I had also noticed i could barely finish my breakfast of 2 cups of oatmeal and 2 cups of blueberries which i had been eating every day for 2 years for the most part. Then after breakfast i would feel bloated and full all day and not want to eat. So i thought it was the blueberries so i stopped eating that after a week or so.

So about two weeks ago i had had enough of the pain, bloating and full feeling which was really messing up my eating and exercising. When I would go running about mile 3 often I would start to feel so bloated it became slightly difficult to breathe because my lungs were being pushed against by my abdomen. So I called my specialist who I had seen for my liver issues and made an appointment. I had to travel for work for about a week so i had some blood work done before i left and then had my appointment last Thursday a day after I arrived home from my trip.

Saw the doctor and he said I had about an 80% chance that I had gallstones moving from my gall bladder and getting stuck possibly. I told him I had also finally figured out the night before that oatmeal was the main trigger food for my worst attacks of this. I also told him that 4 years ago I had an ultrasound and they saw gallstones then. So my billirubin was elevated which can indicate gallbladder backup so he order the same blood panels again to compare and they came back the same.

So I went in for an ultrasound yesterday and am waiting to hear back on that but I already have a surgical consult set up next week in case I need my gall bladder removed.

Ok a day more has passed since I started this and was wondering why my doctor was taking so long to get back to me. Well my ultrasound from 4 years ago had shown I had many gallstones, the one from this week shows I have none! So huh?

Anyway now I am to get a Nuclear test on my gall bladder to see if it is working correctly, if it is then he will looking into my stomach with a scope down my throat. If it is not functioning correctly then more than likely take it out.

Fun times and life is never boring. Good this is I ran 6 miles last night and my knee which was a bit sore felt better and my abs felt ok. So all clear for being part of the relay race this weekend!

If i can get this gall bladder or whatever this figured out by November then I can celebrate that and 5 years of maintaining!

Had the nuclear test and my gall bladder is fine so next is a scoping of my stomach via my throat next Wednesday. Not looking forward to being knocked out to have that done but need to do it to get to the bottom of it.

    Hi Greg,

Sorry to read about your health issues. I had my gallbladder removed last year and was very glad to see it go. Best wishes with your next tests.

I had mine out 3 yrs ago after having attacks for six years. I had two stones the size of golf balls. The surgeon told me that after about five years, the body makes a new "gallbladder" out of the duct that is there, so it isn't really any big deal.

Take the time to listen to the series "THE SKINNY ON OBESITY" with Robert Lustig M.D. on Youtube as it is so helpful.

I'm reading "THE SUGAR FIX" by Richard Johnson M.D. and recommend it to everyone. He has lectures on YouTube since he is a Professor at the medical school in Colorado.

A few years ago I had my gall bladder yanked and I was pretty worried about the aftermath. But I'll tell you I have never had a medical procedure go more smoothly than this operation (when I woke up from the surgery I asked when were they going to operate!!) and bouncing back with no problem with foods in terms of watching what kind of foods I could tolerate...almost wish I WOULD have had some troubles...intolerance of high fat foods can be a common after-effect. Who among our SparkFamily would have trouble with THAT?!? :-)

If you end up losing the gall bladder, you will feel better and realize how long you felt bad. My DH had this done 12 years ago. I on the other hand have not needed such a thing. Praying for answers and a good outcome soon!

Yes they checked my liver and everything else and all was normal. Perplexing but I am looking into it and trust my doctor who is also my friend.

Usually with gall stones it is fatty foods that will bring on an attack. That was my experience before I had mine removed anyway (and my uncle's).

I hope you can get this all figured out. Did they do a ultrasound of your liver since your BR was up?

5 years of Maintaining Nov 2012!

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Today on my 14th Wedding anniversary to my beautiful wife Melinda I look ahead to the 5 year mark of maintaining. Cannot believe all that has happened! My son Jesse is now 2 1/2, Rachel 8 and Hannah 10! Honored to be on the homepage for awhile for SP and in the two books SP has published. My running, lifting, swimming, spinning, core and other stuff is always an amazing and challenging time for me. Running for the 5th time the local Sunflower State Games Governor's Cup 10k this Friday the 13th of July.

Funny thing is I still have not run a full marathon! So that is still on my list to do, I know I can finish one in under 4 hours but would like to in under 3 and a half. I just know myself and until I can reach that goal if I run one and do not then I will just keep trying until I do. But I am trying to take it a bit easier on myself. Hence the swimming and spinning, I find them fun and challenging and they do not leave me so dehydrated and worn. Hard not to run as much but am getting used to it. No reason i cannot run as much but like getting healthy I want to be proactive and not wait until I have an issue to address it but to be aware and stop from having one to start with.

Well that is all from me for now. Have a great rest of the month and feel free to say hello anytime you want, I am here just not seen as much as I used to be.

Greg

Many congratulations on your weight loss and for coming up on your five-year maintenance anniversary! 4A-HEALTHY-BMI, who brought me over to the leadership team over at At Goal & Maintaining + Transition to Maintenance, has been talking you up a lot lately since you're on the eve of what's widely considered the "big one" for maintainers. Thanks for staying active here on SparkPeople and showing the rest of us that real long-term maintenance can be done!
