Recovering

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

After recovering from a mild case of pneumonia, I think I am ready to get back into the exercise groove. I think I am still pretty limited as what I can do because am I still coughing a lot, but I can at least go on my lunch walks again and maybe try the elliptical at the gym. I'm not sure that I'm ready to get back to my kickboxing or water zumba classes just yet.

Amazingly I have somehow managed to lose another pound in the month since I got sick. Part of that is probably that I went several days without eating much of anything...and part of it is that once I started eating normally again, I decided to eat on the lower end of my range until I could get back to exercising.

I'm doing so much better than I was and I will be so happy when I finally stop coughing.

Fitbit

Thursday, January 03, 2013

My husband got me a Fitbit for christmas. So far I am really loving it. I like being able to see how well I am sleeping every night. And the pedometer is much more efficient than the Actiped that I had been using.

I also like that it can track the flights of stairs that you climb during the day. However, I am almost never in a building with steps, so I am having a hard time meeting the minimum goal of 5 flights. I tried using my step at home and just doing that for a while, but it didn't register those as climbing stairs. I guess I need to move somewhere that isn't so flat. emoticon

I like the fitbit as well, and for the same reasons. I wish I knew how to improve my lousy sleeping habits...
After reading the stories of people losing their fitbit from clipping i onto their clothing someplace, I ran a lanyard through the clip on hook and wear it around my neck. That has worked well for me. Good luck with yours.

Holiday Goals

Sunday, November 18, 2012

So I am adjusting my goals for the next month or so. I will continue to workout as I have been doing and tracking what I eat. However, I realize that there will be a few instances when I will not be able to accurately track my food. So in those instances I will make healthy food choices, allow myself a few of my favorite treats, and not allow my family to push me to overeat (although that is rarely an issue).

So my weight goal from now until after Christmas is to maintain. I might still be able to lose a little, but I won't beat myself up if I stay at my current weight for the next month. I have been doing really well for the past several months and the holidays won't derail that for me.

    ...a planned plateau?
Not a bad idea...I may adopt it myself.
Good luck on your endeavors.

Good attitude to have. We have to take time out to enjoy the holidays and not stress about losing momentum. emoticon

Results from my health screening

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

I got the results from my result health screening today. They did a full blood panel and I am in perfect health! There was only one area that showed up a being a moderate risk, my HDL is 44 mg/dL (down from 51 mg/dL last year). Although that is in the healthy range (above 40 mg/dL) it is recommended that women have an HDL above 60 mg/dL to reduce their risk of heart disease.

So I asked the nurse about the results, since I have been exercising and eating well (lots of healthy fats and nuts) and I don't smoke. So why did my HDL go down? She looked at the rest of the lipid panel and pointed out that my total cholesterol is only 123, so it would be very difficult for me to get my HDL much higher than what it is, and definitely not above 60 mg/dL. Also my triglycerides have been cut in half from last year, down to just 73 mg/dL.

My work gives us the opportunity to get this health screening for free every year at our annual staff development day, so I have the results from the past 3 years. They are also giving us several opportunities to be more fit. We are doing a fitness challenge where we can earn points for having a gym membership, exercising every week, doing a charity run, having a preventive care visit with your doctor/eye doctor/ob-gyn/dentist, and a number of other activities that will help you be more healthy. Depending on the number of points that you earn over the next year you can earn a gift card for up to $175.

I'm so excited that my work is encouraging us to be more healthy and that I can get points for things that I am already doing.

Back to the Blog

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

After a short hiatus I am back to blogging. I took a break from most of my SparkPeople stuff over the long weekend when I had my comprehensive exam for graduate school. Essentially I had four days to research and write a 10-15 page paper on a topic that they give me at noon on the first day of the exam. I still ate well and exercised during those four days, but I just didn't have time to do all of the message boards, quizzes, trivia, articles and everything else. I did have to take several breaks to go workout, because I am just not use to sitting still for that long. On one day I even went to the YMCA and ran a 5K. I won't find out the results of my exam until November 13, but my new kickboxing class has really helped keep my mind off of things.

Anyways, back in the swing of things and feeling great!
