I got the results from my result health screening today. They did a full blood panel and I am in perfect health! There was only one area that showed up a being a moderate risk, my HDL is 44 mg/dL (down from 51 mg/dL last year). Although that is in the healthy range (above 40 mg/dL) it is recommended that women have an HDL above 60 mg/dL to reduce their risk of heart disease.
So I asked the nurse about the results, since I have been exercising and eating well (lots of healthy fats and nuts) and I don't smoke. So why did my HDL go down? She looked at the rest of the lipid panel and pointed out that my total cholesterol is only 123, so it would be very difficult for me to get my HDL much higher than what it is, and definitely not above 60 mg/dL. Also my triglycerides have been cut in half from last year, down to just 73 mg/dL.
My work gives us the opportunity to get this health screening for free every year at our annual staff development day, so I have the results from the past 3 years. They are also giving us several opportunities to be more fit. We are doing a fitness challenge where we can earn points for having a gym membership, exercising every week, doing a charity run, having a preventive care visit with your doctor/eye doctor/ob-gyn/dentist, and a number of other activities that will help you be more healthy. Depending on the number of points that you earn over the next year you can earn a gift card for up to $175.
I'm so excited that my work is encouraging us to be more healthy and that I can get points for things that I am already doing.
