This is what I heard on the radio this morning. A group advocating “corporate accountability” wants Ronald McDonald retired, because the mascot allegedly lures people, especially kids, into the fast food restaurants and that’s why America in general and American kids in particular are overweight.
What a crock! (Somehow I’m hoping it’s an April Fools Day news hoax.)
I am not disputing that over-consumption of fast food contributes to weight gain. What has me on the fence here is the fact that once again America is looking for someone to blame instead of finally taking responsibility for their actions.
If my child is overweight or obese, I, the parent, am to blame. Yes, blame. That two-year-old does not make any of her own food choices by any means.
I am the first to admit that I am guilty taking my kids for a Happy Meal and some play in the play place when they were small, while I sat back for just 10 minutes and enjoyed a cup of coffee and some well deserved rest and peace.
How, may I ask does this contribute to my child being obese, if, 99% of the time I advocate healthy home-cooked meals, and introduce my child to yummy fruits (and maybe even veggies…)? The power here is really with the parent/s.
We live in a society of plenty (too much actually) and, while we want this freedom, we clearly don’t seem to handle it very well.
Take responsibility! Both for yourself and for your kids, and don’t spread around the blame. Does anyone honestly believe that fewer people will stuff their faces at McDonalds just because they take away Ronald McDonald who, by the way, is a great icon when it comes to their charity organization?
SP’s success is proof that many people do want to be accountable. Congratulations to everybody here including me. We rock! Weight-wise, exercise-wise, health-wise we might not be where we want to be yet, but at least we’re on the road getting there.
Please spread the SPARK today.
