Between the Years

Wednesday, January 02, 2013

That's what we always called it. The time after Christmas up until New Year's. The time when things seem to settle down a bit.

Between the years is without a doubt my favorite time of the year. And if the enchanted end of 2012 and the fabulous beginning of 2013 are any indication, 2013 will be a beautiful year.

From December 29 to January 1 I hiked a total of 39 miles. I hiked the city, the mountains and the coast.

My urban hike took us over 11 miles of city streets, up and down 26 staircases, 2380 stairs, 1999 up, 381 down.

My favorite hike was a mountain hike where we were surprised by snow. No snow on the ground when we got there, but within an hour we had a couple of inches. This one actually turned into a rather short outing, as we needed to get our Southern Californian (not fit for snow) cars down the mountain while we still could.

On New Year's Day I watched the sun rise from a coastal trail, and watched the sun set from a mountain trail.

New Year's resolutions?
Stay in my happy place.

Love this. Between the years,.... yup, just love it! I am getting excited about doing some hiking in British Columbia this summer. We are geocaching now too and that adds to the fun and puts us on different trails or to unexpected vistas. Have a wonderful 2013 and I hope the happiness lasts year over.

Classmate, that is so funny. But in my house it's the opposite, my hubby thinks he's too skinny and he's not... and I think I look thinner than I really am. LOL. So here's to being satisfied with our own body images!!!!

I know my thin, fit and gorgeous wife stands in front of a mirror and focuses on one tiny "flaw", which really is not a flaw at all. Guys look in a mirror and concentrate on the "best" features and ignore the beer belly!

But here is the thing - there are beauty contests for women but not for men. I think there is far more society pressure on women to look good.

I would say the cartoon is sad but true.

Thanks for sharing.

A Tough Hike

Saturday, December 22, 2012

A week of crappy eating and a still 'troubled' left ankle/foot made for a tough 14 miles today.

Hiked the local mountains with one of my favorite hiking groups. Beautiful and tranquil views and a crisp 39 degrees when we started. It did warm up nicely though as the morning progressed.

Energy was a bit low, which I attribute to a week of eating more cookies and chocolate than I've probably eaten all year...
emoticon emoticon emoticon

About halfway in the still injured foot went on strike. It's been about 6 weeks and there should be some improvement by now. Guess I'll have to make that doctor visit after all - after the holidays.

Happy Christmas to all.

The cookies and candy are a weakness of mine, especially homemade. Thats why I limit a lot of baking during much of the year. Yup it sounds like getting your injury checked out is a good idea. Let us know what you find out.

You know i've finally got my mind in the game. Then the holiday is upon me...cookies at work, can't resist baked goods....chocolates in my bag from a friend...just all the things on my naughty list coming to me at a single moment and me giving in. Your not alone but you know what? we have today. I sure hope your foot is better and you didn't crack it. Have a Merry Christmas my friend.

I don't know what it is about this time of the year but every evening I groaningly get into bed thinking about how sorry I am over something I ate and every day I do it again because candy and cookies are my weakness and, even more, I'm not a perfect person (dang it all).

The Shortest Day

Friday, December 21, 2012

Winter solstice.

I dislike dark even more than I dislike cold.
This day, the beginning of winter, is a day to celebrate.
Catch some rays if you can.

Oh, and stay away from the cookies...

Evil once again rears it's ugly head of pain, sorrow, grief, and chaos.

But, when things this bad happen the love and warm caring hearts of people always come to the forefront of the evil and help to mend the broken hearted.

Love always does over come all evil of all kinds.

These people have so much to work through in this time of loss and shattered lives and broken hearts and confused emotions and thinking.

And then there is the anger that has to be dealt with.

Love even over comes all of this at all times in time...but, this does all take time for healing for all the brokeness.
