Taking it to the Next Level

Sunday, July 22, 2012

My first six fall weekends are booked with local day hikes. I signed up for a 6-series of progressively more challenging hikes this fall. Just received my confirmation. I'm so excited!

First hike starts out relatively easy with 9.5 miles and a 2,000 ft. elevation gain. Hike #6, will take us 21 miles with a total elevation gain of 5,500 ft. It will be an adventure for sure.

And this is what I saw on my hike today:

That sign is a little terrifying. They should have said to report it to the office, if you can make it there. Ha! I wonder if you can carry something like an airhorn that you could sound off to startle a mountain lion. At the very least the bear-strength mace would be a good thing to put on your pack. Be safe out there!

Those hikes sound incredible! I know you're going to enjoy them!

The hikes sound awesome! The possibility of running into a mountain lion? Not so much. Be safe out there!

Enjoy the beauty and energy that will come from hiking!

Hiking has become the new together exercise for me and my husband. Of course he has to go all out. We haven't even been on our first day hike yet, but he has bought a hammock for overnight backpacking. He makes me nervous, LOL!

We have Bobcats around here, and rattlesnakes. Unlike mountain lions, attacks on people are very rare. Heed the sign, be careful!

Reminds me of spending 3 months working in an area populated with musk ox and the occasional polar bear. And not being allowed to carry a firearm (IN SPITE OF working TOTALLY ALONE for the first 6 hours of the morning shift).

When did I stop being self-conscious about my bee-hind?

Saturday, July 14, 2012

As a pear-shaped individual I wear my weight below my waist, so even being "only" 30-40 lbs overweight brings with it a big butt and 'thunder thighs'.
(Thank you, ex-mother-in-law, for putting this in my head more than 25 years ago.)

Sticks and stones... wrong! Words can hurt more.

Even after I had lost this weight I remember that I'd often look at myself in the mirror from behind, especially when I was in tights, going to the gym, to see how big that butt still was. During gym class I would wonder how I looked to those working out behind me. (Chances are they couldn't have cared less and never even noticed me, but our mind does stupid things at times.)

I do consider myself a rational and generally level headed person, so this excessive worry seems strange, even to me, but I guess, you can't jump out of your skin.

It's been about 10 years now that I've been exercising consistently, all along reshaping my body. Yes, over a long period of time, exercise does wonders.

Guess it kind of snuck up on me and I don't recall when it happened exactly, but being on the trail today I realized that I haven't spent any thoughts about how I looked from behind in quite some time now; not at the gym and not anywhere.

Building new confidence takes time too. I wonder if getting older aides in that process also?

Here is what I saw on my hike today. At least initially. We actually hiked through the fog and there was sunshine at the top.

And this is how much fun we had.

Have a wonderful weekend y'all.

So did 10 years of exercise fix your butt or fix your head? Whichever the case, nice work.

Also, it should be a well known fact that guys generally prefer bigger butts. Hell, there is a song about it.

I learned the term "thunder thighs" in junior high and it was devastating then too! I'm with you, every once in awhile, I think my thighs look too big. Then I tell myself to shut up and get on with life. Luckily, I usually listen! I'm so glad you are past even that!

Your hike looks like it was fantastic!

of the green smoothie drinkers.

Still experimenting, but my favorite concoction so far is almond milk, spinach, mango, protein powder, oats, ground flax, and chia seeds.

As green as it looks, you really can't taste the spinach.

I Just Can't Do It!

Wednesday, July 04, 2012

After my 2-day hiking weekend last weekend I decided that this week I would do no workouts whatsoever. With the 4th of July breaking up the week I thought this would be the perfect week to be lazy.

Well, tonight I found myself at the gym.
I just cannot NOT work out. It's impossible!
Being active in that way adds so much quality to my life and I realize it truly has become part of who I am.

For those of you who are struggling with this concept, who are struggling getting even your daily 10 minutes in, be patient. But at the same time, consider your choices. Hate the treadmill, go for a run instead. Hate running, go for a swim. Hate swimming, go for a bike ride. Hate bike riding, do some yoga or Pilates. Hate that go Zumba. Hate Zumba, play soccer. You get the idea.

Trick is to find yours. Mix it up and make it fun.

It'll grow on you, I promise.

Have a wonderful 4th y'all.

yes, like you I was planning on NOT working out this week at all. We are up in Northern Minnesota for the week, and I was just going to have a vacation from it all. However, the first thing I did this morning was put on my running clothes. It actually frightens me a bit how automatic it was. emoticon

Two Days of Hiking

Monday, July 02, 2012

Marvelous weekend, marvelous weather.

Yesterday's 7.3 mile hike started out in thick fog. However after about an hour the fog had burned off and the foggy hike turned into a sunny hike.

Today's 10 mile hike already started out in the sun. This was a hike in the coastal backcountry. Amazingly we had about 1900 feet elevation gain. Being fairly close to the ocean helped keep the temperature tolerable. Downside to these coastal hikes is that there is no shade.

I'll have to stick to the shadier hikes during the summer and maybe pick up the coastal hikes again come fall.

Well, weekend playtime is over. Looking forward to a break in the work week next week for 4th of July. No hike planned that day. I'll be puttering around in my back yard. Building my backyard oasis :) Lots of TLC needed there.

Just saw your blog about hiking [was on a trip when you posted]. Are you in Orange County? Sounds like a hike in the Crystal Cove area and/or Laguna Coast Wilderness. If you are in OC, check out the Irvine Ranch Conservancy hikes [at] and maybe we can hike together at some point after my foot/toe heals up!
