It's done - New Year's Eve Ramblings

Saturday, December 31, 2011

It was a close call indeed.

I had been slacking on my exercise/fitness minutes*** since about the middle of September. That's when I started going to school two nights a week, which substantially cut into my workout time. And I kept on slacking even after the class ended. Just couldn't get back into it.

By that time it was fall, Halloween was rolling around, and then Thanksgiving, and finally Christmas.

With Christmas over I discovered that I was in jeopardy of breaking my 23-month streak of minimum 500 exercise minutes a month. Truthfully, I did consider breaking it.

But then my competitive side kicked in - I just could not let myself do this.
With only 150 fitness minutes under my belt as of Christmas, I decided to kick butt in order to reach my minimum of 500 minutes.

During January though August of this year I had logged well over 1000 minutes each month, but as I said before, it went downhill from there.

I logged 350 exercise minutes this week and reached my 500 minute goal. My steak is still alive: 24 continuous months.

I can truthfully say: "I can did it!"
emoticon

In other Spark-related news: I did manage to eat myself almost to the top of my acceptable maintenance range. Since I keep my range pretty tight at +/- 5 lbs, it won't be a huge deal to get this back down though.

Well, here goes another year.
Happy New Year to all my SparkFriends.
May the New Year bring you health, happiness and peace.

Cheers!
emoticon

*** To clarify: Exercise/fitness minutes are NOT activity minutes. I don't count yard work, cleaning, housework, etc. These are everyday activities that have no place in my fitness tracker.

Good article. I agree about the shake weight--how stupid. get some real weights and put some work into it.

What amazes me even more is that SparkPeople works, yet there are people on SP pushing a lot of junk in this article. What's even funnier, they'll argue with you about it. Thanks for continuously fighting the good fight. There will be plenty more to battle next year.

Winter Solstice - shortest day/longest night of the year - winter is now officially here.

Winter Solstice - counting down, slowing down, finding peace within.

'Tis the Season

Sunday, December 18, 2011

Let it be Christmas everywhere
Let heavenly music fill the air
Let every heart sing let every bell ring
The story of hope and joy and peace
And let it be Christmas everywhere
Let heavenly music fill the air
Let anger and fear and hate disappear
Let there be love that lasts through the year
And let it be Christmas
Christmas everywhere
(~ Alan Jackson)

Recently I've read many blogs about not feeling it.
So, what makes Christmas Christmas? What brings forth that Christmas feeling?

This year, I've decided to simplify. There has been a lot of wear and tear this year on my already frayed nerves. Goal is to at least protect what's left.

emoticon I opted for doing my Christmas shopping early this year, and 90% of it was done on line. Procrastinator and last-minute person that I am, I could not believe how much this cut down on my overall stress level.
Less stress = more room to generate that Christmas feeling :)

emoticon My house is decorated in silver and red. I don't decorate the outside, heck I'm doing this for me, not for the neighbors.

emoticon We have a live tree. It's not Christmas without one. Currently it's still just a tree in the raw, not yet decorated, but sitting in my living room nevertheless and looking beautiful. Decorations will probably go up on Thursday. Planning on doing real candles again, it's not Christmas without them.

emoticon Every Saturday I'm volunteering at a local thrift store, helping out with whatever it is they need doing. I absolutely love it! And I'm looking forward to working there on Christmas Eve.
Maybe, that's what Christmas is all about.

Bah humbug, or hohoho, and who knows what tomorrow brings, but today I'm feeling it.

To all my SparkFriends, sending you Christmas cheer, and wishing you peace this Christmas Season.
emoticon

Oh, and my puppy says hi :)

Hibernating

Friday, December 09, 2011

This morning I had to scrape ice off my car windows for the 2nd time this week. Southern California - ha - I want my money back!
emoticon

Maybe I should hibernate...
emoticon

Too much going on - not enough going on.
Too many maybes - too much uncertainty - too many changes - not enough change.

Maybe I should hibernate...
emoticon

Christmas shopping done.
Exercise minutes so far this month ZERO.

Might as well hibernate...
emoticon

Short days - too many hours of darkness.

Good time to hibernate...
emoticon

Wondering where the year has gone - longing for peace - longing for tranquility - longing to see the light at the end of the tunnel - longing to get my life back.

Maybe if I hibernate...
emoticon

Working on coming to grips with my newfound reality that there are things I cannot fix (besides my car...). Working on losing the control freak in me.

Maybe I'll find balance if I hibernate...
emoticon

SNAP... (out of it already!)

Peace!
emoticon

I try to hibernate on my Fridays off but it doesn't happen.

Very cold for Southern California - can't believe it has been 47 and in the 50s in certain area. emoticon

but not cold enough for snow

It has been decades since I lived in California but I remember well 18 years of Chicago area snow and ice and window scraping. At least you know this will not last or be severe. Or will it? We never know anymore. emoticon -- Lou

This is a tough time of year to stay in the groove. Too many distractions and the short days make it particularly difficult to get outside on week days. This is exactly the time last year where I slipped down a few notches and didn't really get back into the groove until mid February or so. I'm convinced it's the short days that are the problem. Although cold temps don't help.

My only saving grace seems to be signing up for some activity. I have a trail run and half marathon for Feb. So to reach my goal of not dying at these races, I figured I'd better do something and not slip too far.

Sounds like the Serenity Prayer (without the hibernation).

Yes, there are things you can change (yourself), things you cannot (your son??). Peace and Tranquility will come, once you've adjusted to all the change in you. Maybe getting back to yoga would be good for your mind. Sounds like you need some movement (or a Happy Light to combat the darkness) emoticon . Actually, maybe you just need to take a few easy breaths...

Will be thinking of you this holiday season. Fröhliche Weihnachten -
gute rutsch ins Neues Jahr!
