Thanksgiving at the Beach

First time for everything. We usually celebrate Thanksgiving with our neighbors. This year they rented a beach cottage, right on the sand. Temps were in the high 60s and it was a marvelous day. I had brought my camera, but had forgotten to charge the battery so I walked away with only some terrible cellphone pictures. I'll share them anyway.

Shot from the parking lot across Pacific Coast Highway - Pacific in the distance. From there we walked down to the sand. You actually cross under PCH through a tunnel.

Actually I had such a great time that I quit work early today and went back to the beach again. Neighbors are staying for a couple more days. Felt like I was on vacation. Good times.

So day after tomorrow is the 1st Sunday of Advent. Somehow Christmas is far from my mind. :) I'll have to decorate with snowflakes, maybe that will help.

    Theres nothing wrong with the pictures you took, they are beautiful Lricket. It brought bace memories of the times wwe have been to Ca and by the Pacific ocean. Thanks for a trip down memory lane of beautiful sunset and ocean views. Sounds like you had a marvelous time, like being on a mini vacation for sure.

    Wow, thanks for sharing the sunset! I love the Pacific Coast! My cousins live in Simi Valley and we had such a great time last year when I took my son with me to see them! We sat on the beach in Malibu and watched the most amazing sky ever blend into the ocean! emoticon

Consistency - Is it a good thing?

One of my Saturday morning pleasures is drooling into my coffee while messing around on the computer. I've been thinking about consistency, as it pertains to our quest for a healthy and fit lifestyle.

What, really, is consistency?

In my mind it's having a plan and following this plan in order to achieve my desired outcome.

The dictionary says:
* Steadfast adherence to the same principles, course, form, etc.: There is consistency in his pattern of behavior.
* Conformity with previous attitudes, behaviour, practice, etc.
So, striving to be consistent sounds like a good thing.

Then I went ahead and looked up quotes:
* Consistency is the foundation of virtue.
-Francis Bacon
* Without consistency there is no moral strength.

And as I was reading on, I came across these:
* Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative.
-Oscar Wilde
* Consistency requires you to be as ignorant today as you were a year ago.
-Bernard Berenson
* Consistency is contrary to nature, contrary to life. The only completely consistent people are dead.
-Aldous Huxley

So now what? There is some truth to this as well.

Maybe this one sums it up:
* But change must always be balanced with some degree of consistency.
-Ron D. Burton

So, have a plan, but don't be so stuck with it that it impairs your flexibility.
Isn't this what often happens when life throws us a curve? Variations to our plan must be allowed. Like everything in life, this health and fitness thing needs fine-tuning as we go.

November Focus: 1,500 Activity Minutes - Days 2 & 3 - Back in the Groove

Met both, my activity and my water goals both days.

After all those years of eating prepackaged instant oatmeal for breakfast (blueberry, cranberry, flax, etc.), I have switched to plain old fashioned oats.
There are three advantages to this.

$$ - This stuff is much cheaper. Bought a humongous container for $1.99 today.

emoticon emoticon I get a much bigger portion for the same amount of calories as the prepackaged stuff.

emoticon I'm consuming a lot less sugar and probably a lot less chemistry over all.

I add fresh fruit or applesauce and protein powder. This is a breakfast that will easily hold me until lunch. And as I said, I get a huge bowl for just 300 calories.

My energy is through the roof, and (at least I imagine) I'm thinking more clearly as well. Extreme concentration at work today. I'm back in the groove!

    I am with you on the oatmeal. I use the steelcut oatmeal and it is soooooooooooooooo much better than the instant. I have added the protein powder on occasion! Keep up the good work! emoticon

    That's great. I buy the BIG container with 2 big bags of oatmeal at SAMS. It lasts forever. I have oatmeal 3-5 times a week.

I put nuts & raisins in it, cook it in the microwave,after that I add 1/2 - 1 container of strawberry or peach yogurt & heat up some frozen blueberries till they are hot and add them.

Eat with or without mixing . It's so yummy. Love the hot blueberries on it.

November Focus: 1,500 Activity Minutes

At the beginning of this year I had set my goal to achieve 12,000 activity minutes during 2010. Well, I'm running a bit behind with only 9,500 minutes achieved thus far. (To make it look worse, that's 8 hours and 20 minutes behind. Ouch!)

My main focus this month will be on exercise. I'm planning to log 1,500 activity minutes in November. This is doable but will take planning. I'll mix it up between aerobics/kickboxing, 30 Day Shred, yoga, and walking.

The secondary focus is on water. I can go all day without a drop.
But, days where I get sufficient water are also good food days. Seems to go hand in hand.

So, that's the plan.

    I have learned to LOVE water! I got a really good water bottle at Target that I really like, and I fill it all day long. I think you just have to start doing it, and it will catch on. I used to not drink much water, either, but now, I can't live without it! emoticon

    Great goals. I too struggle getting in my water everyday. some days no problem other days not thirsty at all. It is so important to drink water.

    I'm with you on the water. I used to go pretty much all day without it. Then I'd finally get thirsty in the evening, drink a couple of glasses of something liquid and that's all I needed. One thing that has helped me get better about it is to have a HUGE glass. I fill that huge glass before every meal and for some reason I'm more tempted to empty the glass of water down my throat than down the drain.
