This point in the river may look the same but is it?

Thursday, October 02, 2014

The number on the scale may be a number I hit before. The problem with back sliding, and starting over is the assumption that everything is the same. But that isn't true. There can be lots of differences even if the scale says, "you haven't changed you weighed this weight a year ago, six months ago you weighed less, you haven't changed, blah blah blah."
Actually the scale doesn't say it, I do.
But I also say other things. Like this point in the river looks familiar but the water passing by is not the same water as before. I bring new skills, new habits, new thoughts, new experiences to this weigh in. So even if the scale says I have been here before I haven't.

Jeannette59 I do need to come up with a new challenge. There are lots of "good" ones I need to find one that the part of me that goes past good ideas into action buys into. ZZYYGGY3 thanks for the encouragement.

emoticon You respond to your own challenges, so how about bringing those lessons learned about consistency to a new challenge. I love the stretching videos here on Spark. You work your kinks out, feel more alive and ready to take on the world. emoticon

Effort to create a habit vs maintaining it / 2 veg breakfast challange

Saturday, September 27, 2014

In the spring I set a challenge of having 2 veggies with every breakfast. Even posted pictures.
Well fell off of SP and then fell back on SP and now the challenge from the spring is my new norm. I build my breakfasts around the veggies and I like it. I don't take pictures anymore. But I do shop and cook with the idea of having long cooking veggies ready for the morning.
This is the first real behavior change that I see I have integrated. Woot.
Here's the take away, the effort to build a habit is harder than the effort, yes there is still effort, to maintain the habit.

Will Power is a fantasy.

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

From Sparkpeople artilce Mind Over Body, ''There probably isnít any such thing as willpower. Thatís just the name we give to the experience of getting ourselves to do something that isnít high on our list of things we think we want to do. What we are really doing in those situations is using memory, anticipation, and an appeal to our most basic values to shift our in-the-moment priorities."
This is great news, I no longer have to chase willpower like it is some illusive holy grail rather I can work to build it like I would build muscles.

I don't think this is just semantics, if will power is a force unto itself then more or less matters. If on the other hand it is experience, anticipation, memory then there is more going on then the presence or absence of a force. There are things that can be built on.
Very impressive becoming a triathlete.

It's all a matter of semantics and I consider that a waste of my time in spite of my "education!" Forget the words. How bad do you want this? Do you embrace the challenge? You own it, you get it! It's about you having control to make it happen. I found it all when I became a Triathlete at 63! That was a defining moment! Stay strong, focused, and be well!

Hearing Voices and Liking it.

Sunday, September 14, 2014

In the Sparkpeople article Mind Over Body there is one of ten steps which speaks of two voices. There is one voice that we hear which speaks quietly before we go off our eating and exercise plan. There is another loud voice which we hear after we "blow it". The first voice can be missed because it is quiet, non condemning, encouraging but not pushy. It invites doing something different in the moment but doesn't insist. The second voice is condemning, loud, cruel, pushy and predicts doom. The illuminating part of the article was that we can train ourselves to hear the first voice. Last night I was tired. I went to the fridge to look for a pick-me-up and heard the voice say, "Can you skip this snack?' Huh?, I stopped, I thought, I shut the door and left the room. Wow, what a great voice. Not bossy, not demanding, quietly confident, and helpful. I like this voice. Sweet but not artificially saccharine like a parent saying with a smile, "you don't really want that do you?" I am adding listening for this voice as one of my daily goals. For the first time I am now aware of having an internal advocate. It is great to learn to be on my own side.
