Tiny Star shaped Flowers calle "Zaaee" an enticingly scented variety of Jasmine!!

This is "Juhi" with a delicate but all pervading perfume---lingering on subtly after the Flowers fade!!

This is "Madan Baan" or Cupid's Arrow---the most fragrant of all Varieties of Jasmine!!I keep small Garlands of it in each Room to perfume the house naturally---enticing and inviting!!!

A whiff of Indian Perfume 1--Pictures!!

Thursday, May 05, 2011

Pictures of the intoxicatingly perfumed "Bakula" Flowers--these fall under the Bakula Tree---literally forming a thick perfumed Carpet underfoot!!They retain their Fragrance even when dried and sere---I have often kept Muslin packets of these in my Closet to scent my Clothes!!
The heady "Chaapha" Flowers too are my absolute favourites---I love the way they subtly perfume the Atmosphere with their Scent for days even after they fade!!!
This is a Gift from the Gods to Man---the beautiful and delicately scented "Prajakta/Paarijaat" Flowers---and these please the Gods the most when offered to them!!These bloom at Dawn---and an old Sari is spread beneath the Tree to catch these delicate Flowers---for these are special to both God and Man!!!

OMG...I swear I could smell all of them right now, like there is a faint lingering smell right around me, must be my head!!! We had a big "paarijath" tree outside our apartment in chennai, and I remember picking them up for mom to make into a garland for God :)

Beautiful flowers. I wish I could smell them, too. I'm really enjoying this spring--I step outside and the air is perfumed again, now that we have flowers in bloom again. I miss that in the winter, even though my allergies don't miss the flowers, LOL!

Parenting--Memories!!!

Wednesday, May 04, 2011

Lotta married on 14th. February 1993 and Sayali left home on 20th. August 2000 to study at RIT and marry her Fiance there---since then it's been just Sudhir and me---staidly meandering along together.I've never really been the "mushy" Mother---I mean I've paddled their bottoms for most things---sometimes so hard that they've had trouble sitting down on their butts---Sudhir in fact has been the quintessential "Mom" for them---that's why they wish him specifically on both--Mother's AND Father's Days!!My way of showing love has been in feeding them good healthy Food and ensuring their healthy daily routine---not to forget disciplining them---most of the time!!
I always had one simple rule---if one or the other came crying to me---both would get paddled---because every action begets a reaction--hence neither of these two was innocent at all!!I'd never buy them Sweets either---because I didn't believe in bad habits of any sort---but Sudhir was another story!!!A pushover, he'd give in to all their reasonable demands---rarely saying "No" to them!!For instance Sayali adored Sweets(still does) and on our way to Mummy's home on Weekends, would dig in her heels like a Mule in front of the Sweet Shop on the corner---I'd drag her screaming and shouting to Mummy's without buying her any---but Sudhir would stop and buy her all the Sweets she wanted---ending up controlling only the number!!So needless to say I became the "disposable" Parent--because all I said all the time was "No"!!!
The reason for me being the disciplinarian was the fact that Sudhir was extremely busy during their early years and so got very little quality time with the Girls during the Week---and I didn't want him to fritter it away on the Weekends trying to teach them about Right and Wrong-----I was there to do that anyway.Besides he left by 8 a.m. and returned after 9 p.m.---so I felt he deserved his quiet and peace in the house!!Of course I'd keep him up to date every night with their mischeif as well as their better conduct---for as their father it was his prerogative to know what his children were up to---but if I had already taken the action needed he never interfered---only letting them know subtly that he was aware of both the Good and the Bad things---so in their eyes we always stood united!!
My own relationship with Daddy became stronger after he began taking Life easier---but I was already 11 years old by then and by the time I was 21 years old he passed away---it's been my greatest regret since then!!!I wanted my daughters to enjoy and cherish their time with their father---and it has paid me rich dividends today!!We have all had great fun along the way---sometimes they grouse about not having been to Discotheques etc.before their marriages---their ultimate coming home time was 8 o'clock each evening---which they still bitch about---specially Sayali because she was 26 years old when she left us!!However fact remains that both of them were pampered silly by their indulgent father---even to the extent of wheedling out their monthly Allowance from him 5-6 times each month---and then picking his pocket and cheekily telling him about it later!!Me--I was a pretty strict about Money---but they even caught me on the wrong foot at times!!I learnt to give them exact change to buy Vegetables and Fruits---otherwise I'd never get any change back---no matter which denomination I gave them the entire sum just disappeared!!!They'd be waiting to fleece me---but then I was their "Maa"---so I learnt really fast!!!
Lotta was a lazy brat---immersed in Books and her own Dream World---loving nothing more than to just lie back--read her favourite Books and watch old Movies on the Video----and eat like a glutton!!!She had this annoying habit of eating everything that was cooked at home---in small Steel Bowls or "Katories" at regular intervals during the Afternoon---finishing the Dish that caught her fancy---literally polishing off every tiny bit of it from the Vessel!!!Where she put all of it is beyond me--for like Sudhir she always looked thin as a Reed!!!Both of these Girls drove me mad during the Vacations---needed to constantly stuff their mouths with Goodies!!Lotta to learnt to drive---but so lack-a-daisically that after a while we let her be---though today she has turned into a fine Driver--ferrying her daughter to and from School!!!
Sayali learnt to drive at 18 and was gifted a brand new Car on her 19th Birthday by her proud father and was thus unleashed on the streets of Bombay--bowling around Town at break-neck speed---earning Parking and Speeding Tickets by the Gross!!!She became an expert at wheedling Policemen or "Havaldaars" to let her off the hook as well as making friends with Anil---our neighbourhood Garage Owner and Car Mechanic---to get minor bumps and scratches camoulflaged expertly on the sly---while we were bliss fully unaware of these measures!!
Her Best Friend Laxmi---they've been Best Friends for 33 years now--and she literally painted the Town Red--playing hookey and cutting Classes at Sophia's to see Movies, eat at the Taj and Sheraton Hotels and just generally fool around daily---arriving home at exact 8 p.m.---with a Butter-wouldn't-melt in her mouth expression!!!
Today both are Individuals in their own right---and while I'm extremely proud of the way they've both handled their lives---both are extremely caring, responsible and loving Human Beings---and if I may say so----a real credit to the pair of us!!!

Poor Sayali Chick--coping with Ole Ma Hen!!!

Tuesday, May 03, 2011

It's as if the years have just rolled back---Sayali's in Mumbai for a Project and living at home---and the Time Zones have seamlessly joined together!!!It's not as if I miss the Girls---Sudhir and I have settled into being "Staid old Bores" according to her----but it really feels nice to be a full time Mother again---and that too in MY Home!!!
Each time I visit them I can't forget that I'm in their homes---so try hard not to interfere in their schedule--rather adapt mine to suit theirs. Now it's a totally different Scene--she's back into MY Territory--and boy am I living it up---making a totally maternal nuisance of myself---chuckling with devilish glee all the while I'm at it!!So here's Ole Ma Hen strutting about clucking away in unholy Glee---while the poor little 36 year old Chick tries hard to find ways to protect herself from my aggressive Maternal Instincts!!!
P.S. Most of it is genuine----but some of it is exaggerated----aimed at needling her and getting my own back!!!

Growing Up--3

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

The next Stage in my growing up was meeting and falling in love with Sudhir---a more comical tale is impossible to find!!!Akka our common Grandma--his maternal and my paternal---was all the time worried that living in the "back of beyond" place as she called Chandigarh I'd meet and marry somebody who'd be disreputable---and so she began working on Atya---trying to convince her to marry within the family---Milind was already married to Neena---and she reasoned that marrying Sudhir to one of her grand daughters and Atya's neices would bind the family even tighter together!!Hence she picked me---and Telephonic talks with my Parents concerning this began in earnest!!
As the Talks progressed it was decided that Sudhir would chaperone Akka and my younger aunt Kusum Atya to Chandigarh---because Kusum Atya lived in Chandigarh then---and had been taken to Bombay for treatment after a bad bout of Encephalitis.Hence though Sudhir was aware why he was coming to Chandigarh I was kept in the dark----they thought it would be better to keep me in the Dark--so that he could see me in my element!!Mummy however warned me to behave like a "Lady' and be on my best behaviour--which I found to be very odd---because it was just Sudhir who was visiting!!Those days I used to call him "Dadoba" as that was a synonym for "Older Brother" in Marathi. The day they arrived I came home from College to find him ensconced along with Akka at home---Kusum Atya having been taken home by her husband Sharad Kaka.My first reaction on seeing him was pulling his ears affectionately first---and then tugging at his hair(a very thick patch then) all the while talking nineteen to the dozen as usual--having totally forgotten all poor Mummy's instructions regarding my code of conduct---ignoring both Akka's and Mummy's ferocious glares---totally confused about what had I done to earn these---much to Daddy's amusement!!
In the days that followed I showed him around Chandigarh--with Mikki and Ritu acting as chaperones---and the four of us had a lot of Fun.The 10 days of his visit literally flew past---and just 2 days before he was to leave Mummy went to her Kitty Party--leaving the four of us at home. That day Sudhir proposed----and I turned him down saying"but you're my brother---how can I marry you??"I must say that he took that pretty well---and told me to think it over--explaining how this marriage was permissible by Custom.I began thinking about the Proposal---the more I mulled over it--the greater it appealed to me--till I really felt that it was meant to be.There was however one snag---the man who'd proposed to me didn't bring up the Topic again---and this was very frustrating----because I'd by now decided that it was better to marry the Devil I knew than a total stranger---but was at my wit's end about how to open the conversation!!!
Finally like an Idiot I just couldn't wait any longer and blurted out--"I don't mind marrying you---if you really were serious about it!!" the evening before he flew back to Bombay.Till today he teases me about my answer while I tell him that ultimately it was me who actually proposed to him---however that will be 42 years ago this October---years that we've spent literally living in each other's pockets since then!!!

Aww, so cute! I love that picture.

What a great story. I would find it very .... weird to marry someone my parents picked for me. It's just not in my cultural make up, I guess. That and, much as I love my parents, I don't know that I would have trusted their choice--though it did matter to me that my parents *like* and approve of my choice in spouse--and thankfully they did! But in your case it certainly seems to have worked out well.
