Back At It... Again.

Saturday, April 06, 2013

My knee healed pretty well and I was back to the gym and losing again. The weight loss kept my PCOS symptoms on the down low and we ended up with the surprise of a lifetime - baby #4! Owen was born December 4th, 2012. :) I didn't gain as much with him as I did with the others (right around 35-40 lbs), so hopefully it won't be too bad getting it back off!

Right now, I'm working on juggling home life with 4 kids ages 5 and under. I don't get to the gym a ton, but I am still taking Zumba classes and doing Pilates. I've lost about half of the weight gained during pregnancy. I'm losing about 1 lb a week, which is slower than I'd like, but I am nursing. :/ I'm hopeful that if I stick with it, I'll be able to lose another size by my birthday.

I completely understand - I'm due with baby #5 in less than 2 weeks and with the 4 I already had it posed a lot of challenges. With a newborn on the way I'm dreading how much work I have a head of me (my other kids are 11,10, and 2 year old twins). I'm only taking time off til late June/early July and then I start my home daycare back up again cuz we can't afford to keep living off of one paycheck. So the struggles will always be there, but the need and want for change has to be greater =]

I may be dreading the next couple weeks but at the same time I'm very pumped that I will be able to get into a fitness routine like I have been in the past. I already have a great plan to get me in shape before winter and I have a goal that I have no choice but to hit. I'm hosting a 5K in Nov to help raise funds for our local food bank's Christmas Drive. They've helped our family in the past and I really wanted to return the favour. Plus it's something I can't back out of. The harder I try to get back into shape - the more satisfied I will be with the end results of the race!!

What sort of goals do you have now that you're back?

Congrats on the new baby. It's hard to find some me time with 4 kids.

Change of Plans...

Saturday, October 22, 2011

I tore my meniscus and had to have emergency knee surgery in September. I'm still in a leg brace and not allowed to really do much. I am doing my physical therapy, both at home and in office. Obviously, the surgery ruined my chances of making my weight loss goal by Sophie's birthday...

On the bright side, I'm not gaining, and I'm only 6 lbs away from the goal I was trying to make by November. As soon as they clear me for real exercise again (possibly January/February), I'll pick up where I left off and be one hot mama, lol.

I'm back in almost all of my pre-baby clothes, so not too shabby! ;-)

I agree. I am a Registered Massage Therapist, here in Canada. With a meniscus tear, yes, you need to stabilize the knee joint, and you especially want to be careful with pain and swelling, but there's still quite a bit you can do!

First, you want the swelling to reduce. Do all the standard stuff, like elevate your leg, support it, and use an ice pack. Another trick to help move the fluid out of your knee is to "pump" your lymph system. In a nutshell, your lymph system is a network of vessels (like your blood vessels), only, it's one direction, and it doesn't have it's own pump. It relies on having one-way valves that separate the vessels into chambers. As one chamber is gently compressed, it forces the fluid up to the next chamber higher. When it is released, it "sucks" the fluid from the chamber below, which "sucks" from the one below that, and so on. There is a larger chamber in the crease between your thigh and your pelvis/hip. You can "pump" it gently with the flat of your fingers, and that will help encourage movement of the fluid from your leg upwards.

Once the swelling has gone down, you can still move your leg, but just be careful not to move the knee. So, you might do leg-lifts, with a straight knee, and the knee brace on, for instance, or go swimming with a waterproof brace. In fact, check with your physiotherapist, but they might even encourage you to keep doing exercises like that, as it helps to stabilize the knee and strengthen it! Just listen to what your body is telling you, and if it hurts, stop and get some advice from the professionals you are working with. But, you can still do quite a bit! Just think outside the box! :)

Take care, and I hope you heal quickly! Remember, muscle is your fat-burning machine, so focus on building the muscle that you can, and you'll be in good shape! You're doing so FANTASTIC!!!!! emoticon

Brilliant - well done you. Do you exercise upper body?? Susan Powter speaks of adapting - she has a couple of good books on the subject.

I hit my first goal of being under 200 in June!

I'm still working at getting the rest of my baby weight off. It feels like it's taking forever! I have a really hard time losing weight while nursing, so that's probably a big part of it. Sophie is 8 months old now and just weaned. I'm already noticing a difference in appetite and ability to shed pounds. :) I'm still on track to be my pre-baby size by her first birthday.

My plan of attack is to continue taking Zumba classes and stick to watching my carbs and portion sizes. I'd like to get more gym time in when I can also.

Here We Go Again...

Wednesday, January 05, 2011

Sophie was born November 7th, 2010.

I gained A LOT of weight with her. Much more than I had hoped to gain - like double, ugh. I'm now back to the gym and trying to lose the baby weight. I've lost almost 20 lbs since the baby was born, leaving 30-something to go.

Seeing how far I have to go is hard for me. I worked SO hard to lose weight before I got pregnant, and it's like starting all over again. The small comfort is that I have lost large amounts of weight in the past, and kept it off until I got pregnant, so I CAN do this. I just have to find the motivation and work hard.

My first goal is to get back out of the 200's and never go back to being that big again! My second goal is to get back to pre-pregnancy weight/size (175-180, size 10-12). Once I reach that milestone, I'll be pretty happy. I think ultimately I'll try to get down to 150's-160's, but that's far away right now.

I'm a lot rounder than I wanted to be, but Sophie is precious and totally worth it. :) The weight WILL come off. I just have to keep telling myself that and try to be patient.

You can do it and it's great that you aren't waiting to get back in shape like I did. Now I have a 5 year old and too much weight left over. You're on the right track. She's beautiful congratulations!

Change in Plans ;)

Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Well, looks like I won't be making that 165 goal for our vacation in June.

We're currently almost 14 weeks pregnant with Baby #3! We're due in November. I've been hovering around 175-177 lbs, which really isn't that bad for being in our 4th month. I'm optimistic about having a healthy pregnancy and baby!

I'll be back sometime around New Year's to get the baby weight off. I made it down to 175 lbs, size 10-12 (my goal!!!) before getting preggers, so that's my first postpartum goal. Here's hoping to be one hot mama after this baby is born!
