Every July 4th is the same; everyone comes to our house for a barbecue. There's always fattening salads, hot dogs, hamburgers, beer, desserts. You name it---nothing is healthy unless someone happens to bring a watermelon. Even the fruit salad is laden with cool whip.
This year will be different for me, as far as what I serve and eat. I usually make a taco salad. I will probably get a lot of flack on Thursday, but this year I'm not making it. I got a recipe off SP for a modified ramen noodle salad. I have decided to make that instead. I also bought a bag of cherries and grapes. I usually don't put those out because of the cost, but if I don't, I will munch on potato chips. So this year, they are going in bowls on the table.
Tonight we bought the beer. My husband wanted to buy me a six-pack of UFO Raspberry, but I thanked him for thinking of me and declined. Last week, at my Mom's birthday party, I made some crystal light, poured it over ice in a tall glass, and nobody kept after me about why I wasn't drinking. I plan on doing that again tomorrow.
Exercise will be in the pool, which is usually my go-to form of exercise in the summer. There is a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon, so I will make sure I get at least 30 minutes of swimming in the morning.
I'm determined not to eat mindlessly this year. Hopefully with planning, and putting it in writing, tomorrow will be just another day, and I will be well within my range. Wish me luck.

This has been a rough summer. We had 4 different vacations scheduled. I was worried about how I was going to do. In the past, my mind set was, "Hey, I'm on vacation. I'm not dieting." Then, my favorite gym closed. How was I going to get my strength training in!
We just got home from our last scheduled trip this summer, and I only gained 3 pounds! Usually I can easily plan on gaining 5 pounds per trip. The difference this time: I wasn't dieting! I was eating healthy. Plus, we scheduled active vacations walking, swimming, golfing; not sitting on a bus or in a car sightseeing.
I've been trying to stay active this summer. Unfortunately, I'm having back issues, so my strength training has to be put on hold for a bit longer, but I will get back into it. I plan on getting together with my sister-in-law, who has a home gym in her basement.
All in all, I'd say this was the most successful summer I've had in a long time.

Yes, that's right! This is the third time I've started Spark People. And it is the last! I've been wanting to write this blog for a while now, but I was afraid I would fail! And then I thought, so what! I'll just start over again. And again, and again, and....well, I think you get it.
But let me tell you, my friends, I have not failed! I have been back with SP full force for 3 months now. I have not lost as much as I wanted, and I don't always get the fitness minutes in that I want. So why have I not failed? Because I am no longer on a diet! I am on a journey to live a healthier life.
The only 2 times I've gained weight did not get me down. Each time was only about 1/2 pound, but it was also after I increased the amount of weight I was using in my strength training. Easter is just around the corner, and believe it or not, I still have candy left over from Christmas! I eat it, but only about 1 serving a week. Sometimes I go even longer. The best part about it is that I try to give it away to my family, and they say "NO". They see me exercising and eating healthier, and they are now joining in.
I still have a long way to go, but I will get there. I still eat chocolate if I want, or have a beer or glass of wine. The difference now is that I account for every little thing that I put into my mouth. There are no forbidden foods. There are foods that I try to stay away from so I don't over indulge, but if I do eat them, I will count out a portion and have my husband take the rest away.
Spark People is a great tool, and has a lot of support. Come, join me. Get off that roller coaster diet you are on and and adventure on a journey to a healthier life. You'll be glad you did. I know I am!
