Lessons learned

As written in my last blog entry, I have a history of losing/regaining the same 10 pounds. Since Christmas, I have lost 17 pounds. That's the 10 pounds I gained, plus 7 more.
One lesson I've learned is that SparkPeople really works if you stick with the trackers. I didn't realize how much I was eating until I started keeping track of my calories. I learned if I stop tracking, I gain weight. I've found foods that are lower in calories that keep me full longer. I've learned to drink lots of water. Exercise is now a priority instead of optional.
I've learned that I can go on a 5 day vacation at an all inclusive resort and gain 3 pounds from atypical eating/drinking. Some people would think that's something negative. What makes it a positive experience for me, is that I learned I can still have fun and take off the weight again within 2 weeks. I used to give up after a weight gain, but not this time.
I've learned what a good support group will do for weight loss. I belong to a group that cheers me on in good and not so good weeks. They really help keep me accountable and motivate me to keep going after reading about their successes/struggles.
I've learned so many things since Christmas and I hope to keep learning so that I do not regain back those pesky 10+ pounds! I think the third time is the charm for me! emoticon

Tracking food daily is definitely the #1 key to weight loss. I also keep a daily hand-written food journal.

Eighteen years ago, I was a slim 135 pounds and just about to get married. Then I went back to college and gradually increased to 168. After 4 kids, my weight topped out at 180 pounds. I stayed that way for a while despite trying to exercise more. I even started running and gained a couple of pounds. After some soul searching, I finally had to admit my diet needed a change. I read in our local newspaper about Dr. Gott's no flour, no sugar diet. I decided to research it, and found it would be the most simple for me to follow--no hurt trying it, right? The first day, I was down 2 pounds and by the end of the week, I was down 4 pounds. I NEVER have lost that amount of weight in a short period of time. What was even more amazing, was that my cravings went away. I just focused on the foods I could have. Within 5 months, I was down to 150 pounds. I never dreamed I would ever get out of the 170's. My weight finally plateaued at that point, but did not gain for the next 3 years. Things were good until I started cheating periodically and the weight gradually started to increase to 160. I told myself 160 is the break off point, and I needed to get strict with what I eat. I joined weight loss buddy at that time, and with the support there, I lost those 10 pounds again. You would think I've learned my lesson and kept the weight off, but no--it came back again. Then I heard of spark people, started tracking my calories, and lost the weight last fall. Here I am again after getting to 161.5 over the holidays. I am currently at 153.5 after being faithful with my eating and tracking my calories, and drinking lots of water. Will I ever get the motivation to keep my lifestyle up? I've come to the conclusion, I'll ALWAYS have to watch what I eat and not slip into lazy habits. I never even crave the sweet stuff when I stay away from sugar and flour, so why don't I stay away from it?? Easier said than done, but I'm learning. Maybe the third time will be the charm emoticon

    I don't have to completely eliminate it, but sugar is definitely a negative impact in my life. And lately, I've cut out a lot of carbs, which means I've pretty much cut out flour. I'm happy with how my diet is going, but when/if I slowly start adding back in some of those old foods, I'll start with the non-flour, non-sugar ones - maybe that is the REAL reason why lower carb is working for me!

    I too have come to the realisation and its hard fact to deal with that this is going to be life long work. Keep pushing cause your doing great and you give me courage. emoticon

    Keep plugging away. I have learned that I'm one of those people that will always have to watch what I eat and my exercise. Do I slip up, sure but I get back on track as soon as possible. I read some place (probably on Sparkpeople) that if you got a traffic ticket you wouldn't think "Oh well, I blew it today. I might as well stop following all the rules". Our health is the same way, don't toss a day away because you slipped up mid morning.
