So during marathon training (which went fabulously!), I started lifting. I kinda tapered off (mostly out of laziness) about 2 months before the marathon. I never did much leg work, either, which I should have! I've heard about the New Rules of Lifting for Women (NROL) on SP for quite some time, but didn't want to get into a new-new routine during training. I finally bought it for my Kindle on Tuesday afternoon. I printed out the first workout but didn't have time that night. Wednesday it was!
I started out with 30 mins of cardio - 1 mile run (~10 mins) and 20 mins on the elliptical. The run was GREAT. I had to stop myself from doing more. I actually told myself I would stop at 1/2 mile, but my knees felt great and the run in general felt awesome. A dinky little mile is so short after a marathon. ;-)
I jumped into the lifting afterward. 5 exercises, 2 rounds each. Sounds easy, and it didn't feel crazy hard at the time. My shoulders and legs are little sore today, though, so it worked. The first 4 workouts are only 2 sets of 5 exercises, so I wonder if that's enough? (Well, this workout alternates with another one, no idea what it's like yet!)
The NROL suggests 3 days/week, so I'm going to stick with that the best I can. I'd like to continue running 3-4 days/week, which is a bit of a drop-off from my 5-6 days/wk. Somehow I'll adjust to not running 150+ mile months lol.
There's a section on efficiency that really made sense to me. Last year's marathon training was tough. I was always hungry and had to eat a Gu on 8 mile runs and 4-5 servings on my 20 mile runs. This year? No food necessary under 13 miles and 1-2 servings was enough on 20 mile runs (sometimes I had Gatorade, though). The difference was my body getting used to it. No more crazy insane hunger for 2 days after running 20 miles (or a marathon). Just another day where I could eat a little more. I need to do something different, not just run more, more, more.
That and I LOVE being strong. I love flexing my muscles a little too much!
What about you? Cardio gal/guy or pumping iron gal/guy, or happy mix?

So, work changed a lot of things starting in January, and SparkPeople was blocked for months. It just opened back up, so I'm tentatively back. I have tons going on and have totally lost track of everyone here, so I'm overwhelmed for now.
What's new with me?
I ran the Cincy Flying Pig marathon on 5/5/13 in 4:27, about 7 minutes off my goal time. I had to stop for 5 minutes at the half due to a heart palpitation and lost the 4:20 pace group. Running the second half solo was lonely and boring, but I just kept trucking. The finish was a little anti-climactic! Good race, though, and I'd do it again.
Since Cincy was a teeny let-down, I signed up for the Cleveland marathon on 5/19. But, what happened last year during my second marathon (which was 3 weeks after my first?) - major IT band pain. :-( Wah-wah-waaaaaahh.. Could have and should have called that one. I power walked the last 6 miles and grit my teeth and ran the finishing chute. It was knee-buckling pain that was impossible to run through. Ugh. 4:48 for that one (Yes, I was on track for a 4:03 finish through the half and 4:10 (which was the pace group I was running with) through mile 18). Having to walk that far was a little sad, but it really didn't bother me that much.
I'm planning to lay off the full marathons (or at least having a time goal) for a bit. I usually change my mind, but last year it took months for me to come back after my IT band went wacko (and it is my other knee this year!) and I'm not pushing it.
Instead - back to lifting. I did good through most of March before I just stopped lifting. I have a wedding dress to look good in, after all. ;-)
Planning the wedding has been ok. I'm not doing a lot, so I'm keeping the stress down. Plenty of times I've just thought that we should have just gotten married already. I hope we don't regret the big celebration.
My diet has been not great. I've been maintaining 162-164 (for about the past year, really), but I'd like to lose about 10 pounds of fat. I know when I start lifting again I won't see the scale drop like crazy, which is fine. I just need to cut out the sugar and sneaking snacks. It's not good for me and it's making cravings even worse but indulging pretty much daily (or multiple times per day).
My running was going great this year, though. I ran 130-150 miles per month for Jan-Feb, then 190 in Mar, and 150 in Apr. May is going to be less than 100, most likely, even with 2 marathons (recovery sucks). I haven't had a less than 100 mile month since January or February LAST year. :-/ I might have to get out there in the next week and a half even if my knee hurts. My pride can't handle it!
I hope everyone has been doing well. Any big races that you've done so far or have coming up? Have you changed your eating habits for the better (or worse or questionable (like me!))? Anything new and exciting? :-)

I'm still around, still running 35-40 miles a week, ST 2x per week (major victory for me!) and eating healthy. Silly ST though, I gained 5 pounds since I started. Measurements in my torso (bust, waist, and hips) are unchanged, so I'm seeing how it goes. I'm lifting a lot heavier than I ever have in the past.
Running is going well. I found a group to run with! Some of them are slower than me and a lot are faster, so I'm hoping to find some in the middle to run with. My hip is bothering me a tad and I can't figure out why! It's always something.
Wedding planning is moving along, too. We booked the hall and I bought a dress. We took engagement photos and got the pics back. This weekend I plan to get some Save the Dates and addresses together.
Work has been crazy (hence the lack of blogs between busy work and running/cooking/cleaning/etc at home). I really need to sit down and catch up with everyone!
Anyone training for a race? Which one(s)?
How is your nutrition plan going (can't say diet lol!)? I'm not eating vegetarian anymore, at least not strictly. Most of my meals are, but planning something different from my fiance isn't practical all the time.
Have a great weekend!

It was about 50F for last night's run. Can't complain! I ran 7 miles then went to volleyball a little tired and hungry. Tonight I have a meeting after work, so it'll be a lifting day only. Oh, did I mention I've actually been doing that regularly? Heavy weights, lower reps (thanks Yoovie and Nerd Fitness)!
My Achilles and right foot are a little sore, so I might be taking a couple days off running. We'll see! I'm in my second week of not eating meat, too. It's been pretty easy to avoid it and I'm supplementing with (homemade, of course) protein shakes and protein granola bars when a veg protein isn't readily available. Ny fiance only gave me a hard time about it on Sunday when we ordered pizza (which is rare but I was hungry after my long run... We also rarely get meat on it but he wanted to this time). I've thought about adding it back into my diet, but honestly, veg protein (beans, lentils, tofu, etc) are much easier to prep and I don't have to worry about chicken bacteria contaminating my kitchen. "We'll see!"
We're signing a contract on the wedding/reception hall tomorrow. Our friends might be taking some pictures of us to use on "Save the Dates" but they haven't told me what they charge yet. They were pretty pumped to do pics and they said they'd do the STD's and wedding photography, etc, but we're on a budget here. I'm not looking forward to negotiating with friends and kinda wish I hadn't asked them at all. :-/ This one gets another "We'll see!" Lol.
How is your week going? Sticking to your goals? ;-)
Any recommendations on negotiating or working with friends? Yikes!

The weather channel said it was 8*F when I ran last night, but the wind chill was -5*F. Woohoo! I dressed for it, but really could have used a full hat (vs an ear warmer / headband). Still made it 4 miles! It should be a little warmer (say 18*F) this evening, so I'm shooting for my normal 6-7, but we'll see how I feel.
We finally started volleyball again last night. After winning all but 2 games last session, we moved up into the upper bracket.. and got our butts handed to us last night. Honestly, it's a nice change to have competition, but I hope we can manage to win a couple this season!
Hmm.. nothing else new. Diet has been better than the past couple weeks. I'm not sneaking chocolate or sneaking more chocolate (yeah, I ate a lot of chocolate recently)... I don't think it has anything to do with not eating meat this week, but maybe it is since I'm just trying to be more aware of what I'm eating. Speaking of, I need to pick up more lettuce and spinach from the store. :-) Just takes a little more prep time to eat healthy!
How are you doing with exercise? Do you find its harder to keep a good schedule in the winter? I actually think I have less distractions!
How is your "diet"? Still going strong with you plan for this year?
