Perfect Heart

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Yesterday I had my follow up appointment with my cardiologist. I had a stress done two weeks ago and had an ECHO and appointment yesterday. He was very pleased with my results and gave me a "Perfect" rating emoticon I had cardiac surgery when I was 4 and my father had a heart attack at 40, so that is why I have this regular follow up :) My cholesterol was elevated a couple of years ago and my numbers are now also perfect! But that is where all the praise ends!

He was concerned about my weight emoticon and he has set me a goal of 40 pounds. I have been on a yoyo pattern for a while. He offered to give me pills - I think this is the shock that I needed! I said NO! I can do this! So I go back in October and he will reassess at that visit! So now it is time to get REAL! I have an obese mother and sister, so now is the time! I want to be healthy and I want my heart to stay healthy!

So today, I have taken stock of myself and have put a plan in action. I do not want medication or expensive programs, I know that I can do this with SP and the support here. I have made a plan to include more fresh fruits and vegetables, adding more fiber, listening to my hunger signs and being accountable for the decisions of what I eat.

I have reset my ticker, so here we go........

Some times a little shock therapy, not literally, is exactly what is needed to get us moving in the right direction. I am glad that you made the time to take inventory and set up a plan.

Congraulations on the "perfect" heart report. Keep working in the right direction.

Daisy Award

Monday, January 28, 2013

I am so excited, humbled and shocked to be the recipient of the Daisy Award! I am still away working, this morning when I finished my 12 hour nightshift, my manager and director arrived and were just chatting and hanging about, then the father and grandmother of one of my patients (he passed away last month) arrived to visit. Weird, but ok! Then everytime I tried to leave work I was delayed by something that someone needed to tell me or do, even though I was off the clock! Also I never finish early but today I was done super early! As I was about to leave I noticed some "official" people heading towards our unit with a huge congratulations banner! I made a comment to my manager and was getting ready to leave, she told me to hold tight, still no idea what was about to happen! They came into our unit and said that they had this prestigious award for someone in our unit, we are small and I was wondering who this amazing and extraordinary nurse was, when they said my name! I was shocked and teary, they then went on to read my nomination and it was about my patient that had passed away and what I had done for him and his family! I was deeply touched.
I am supposed to be sleeping but am so overwhelmed and reeling from this experience! Those of you that are nurses, know all about the Daisy Award!
There were lots of photos being taken, I am very shy and embarrassed about being the center of attention, so will see how they turn out, especially after a busy night shift! There is going to be a big banner in the PICU as well as I am going to be featured on the TV screen outside our cafeteria! These are a few photos that I have taken today and I will take some more when I go back to work tonight, this morning I was too overwhelmed to really think about it

5000 and counting!

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Today is my first full day with my FitBit zip and I am loving it! I am feeling more motivated to be moving! Went on a walk this morning, even stopping in to see a friend and then took another walk home! So far have clocked up 6098 steps an it is not even 11 am yet! I love that I have the app on my iPhone and that I can see the numbers changing!

I love the extra motivation the Fitbit gives you. Word of caution get the cord holder to help make sure you don't loose it . I'm with out my Fitbit One right now for just that reason for it fell out of its rubber holder and out of my bra. Good news however is that the FItbit customer serivce is super and they are replacing it for me so it is on its way....
