Walking

Wednesday, February 08, 2012

Hi, thought that it was time that I put my fingers to the keys and type a blog! Can you believe that it is already Feb 8th??! Well, today I decided to pull up my socks and get walking! It has been a while, I have a new friend that is going to be my walking partner - but not today! So I put on my ipod, and went walking with God this morning! I had a great walk and feel so much better for it emoticon
I also have been logging all my food today too and my goal is to get in my water as I have been slacking with that too, I realised that I am drinking very little! emoticon So far I have 4 in! And I still have the afternoon to go!
Life lately has been very hectic, people told me that I would be busy with a senior, but really I had no idea! We had her senior photos taken a couple of weeks ago and they are beautiful - I have such a beautiful daughter - I have been richly blessed! I will post some photos later.
As well as this, I am still studying online for my bachelors and masters degrees online. I am doing algebra still - I did 2 classes back to back! What was I thinking?? I keep telling myself that I am setting a good example to my son, as he is very smart but very lazy too! He is a sophomore this year and he does not have the same drive as his sister, but I am trying not to compare them, he beats to his own drum! emoticon
Today, I have been baking my friendship bread! It was fun, but I do not think that I will be eating much of it - has loads of sugar!
On the shoulder front, it has starting hurting again, just a little though! I go back to the rheumatologist in a couple of weeks, I may need another steroid shot after all :( But she said that I can only have another after 3 months. I have cancelled my curves membership as I have not really gone due to my shoulder and when I have, have been frustrated with not being able to do all the machines. So, I am back to walking, I can do that no matter how my shoulder feels!
Well, had better get back to my algebra!
Christine

so nice to get to visit with you and catch up...you're setting a terrific example for the kids. Does DD know what she wants to do after graduation?
I injured my shoulder years ago (trying to do cheerleader moves with my DD) and it affected everything, including sleep. Hope you get relief! Even if you can't get another shot for a while, do your PT exercises. I used a pulley over the door.
Feel better and keep walking!

Just saw your blog title about walking and thought I would check it out.

Since I haven't followed your Spark page, I don't know what all you are up against with your shoulder.
Here's a book to check out from the library or from Amazon.

"Pain Free for Women: The Revolutionary Program for Ending Chronic Pain"
by Pete Egoscue and Roger Gittines (Paperback - Jul 1, 2003).

I used to frequently start and stop strength training due to various injuries or significant pain. My neck & shoulder muscles were certainly part of the problem...

Anyway, I have learned a LOT in the past couple of years about addressing pain issues, corrective exercises, and strength training with good form, often using bands, a swiss ball, and other ways to build flexibility (where there has been none!), strength, etc.

Do you have access to physical therapy? That can be a source of corrective exercises to build strength.

Anyway, discard what doesn't apply for you and use what you can. -- Good luck in the journey of health and fitness!

Thumbs up for the walking - I have found that is really helping, my attitude and motivation if nothing else. :) I seriously doubt I'd being doing as well as I am without my daily walk.

And as for the algebra - wow. I avoided it in high school, I can't imagine going back to it! You are a pretty awesome person.

Update

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Hi, I have good news! i had my appointment with the rheumatologist and got a good report! It appears that I have irritated and have inflammation of my rotator cuff, thankfully no tear (therefore no surgery!) emoticon The inflammation is also up in my shoulder joint - so I did get a steroid shot into my shoulder joint! Being the nurse that I am - I expected an instant recovery! I had no idea that it would still hurt LOL! But the amazing thing is that that night I tried to to the exercises that they gave me and I could not do them! But in the morning I could! I have been getting more and more movement all the time, so tomorrow I am going to try going to Curves! I know, take it slow!
I am back logging my food and am trying to slowly reintroduce my former exercises. A friend has also suggested yoga but I have not tried that yet, though I have some workouts in my instant queue on netflix to try :)
Thanks for all the support
Christine

So glad to hear that you got good news.....it would have been terrible if you had needed surgery. I'm so glad that you are getting some relief with the cortisone. Hopefully you will heal and be back as good as new!

It is great that you don't need surgery! And it is good you are getting more movement.

Leaving this year behind....

Saturday, December 31, 2011

Happy New Year Everyone!
I am leaving the old year behind and looking forward to the new! I have just restarted my weight loss ticker! I have put on and am looking forward to a new beginning :) My shoulder continues to be a problem and giving me pain - it wakes me too :( I have not been going to Curves but have continued to keep my membership up, seems a waste of money but I do not want to cancel.......if I do, I will never go back! I see the specialist Jan 10th and am hoping for some answers and a treatment plan. I have been lazy - no excuse! I am going to try walking again as I know that that will not be effected by my shoulder! Back to tracking my food too, today! My goal is to track today! That is all, just a small goal and to go for a walk :)
I doubt that I will be seeing the new year in, love my sleep too much and it will be here when I wake up!

Hope the shoulder gets better, I know how hard it is to keep positive when you are in pain, but you can do this!

Does your Curves have Zumba? I know many people that just love that over just the circuit training. I joined a gym a couple months ago and am using a trainer to really learn the machines, to keep me motivated to go as it isn't a habit yet, to be pushed beyond what I would do on my own and now I need to reign in the eating side to see more results.

I'm thinking once you get your shoulder feeling better you'll be more motivated!

After over 7 years with CURVES, I finally totally canceled the membership. I did not need to be doing that anymore, as I was NOT seeing any benefit. Even with Smart Curves. Sometimes we need new things.

Once you get your shoulder in order you may want to go with a Personal Trainer for a program that will benefit you more!

A month later.....

Friday, December 16, 2011

Well, I have had a busy month! My shoulder is still causing me some pain :( I am seeing a specialist Jan 10th and am hoping that then I will have a plan for treatment as right now I am in the waiting zone! Some nights after working my whole arm is aching! Even with my online school work I have had to take breaks due to the pain! I am not a good patient that is for sure!
On the homefront we have been busy with my daughter and band! We got to the state and then the championships! We are just a small town and we came in 6th for the state! Then she went to Hawaii for Pearl Harbor and they were part of the massband! I am such a proud mama! She is a senior so this is our last year and it has been quite the ride! I have been totally off track as I have been busy with my school studies! I sat my final yesterday for my algebra class and I passed which I was thrilled about as math has never been my strong point! I now have 2 weeks off school before my next class begins :) Now I have to get ready for Christmas! The tree is up and I gave my son the responsibility for decorating it - it is half done at the moment :) I realised that our outside decorations are still sitting waiting to go outside too! It has been snowing this week, so that is my excuse! I am now away working, so will put them out when I go home on Monday! I still have to shop for my children, but my Christmas cards DID go out on time :) I am doing OK with eating, it is the exercise as most things (even getting dressed) hurts it! I need to get out walking especially now that the snow is melting! I am thinking of cancelling my Curves membership until I get my shoulder sorted - I am still paying but have not been going emoticon emoticon
Talk to ya later!

emoticonCongratulations to your Daughter and the Band, that is an awesome experience!! And what a way to end her High School Career!!
emoticonWith the issues with your shoulder, would the Dr give you a note to put your Curves membership on Medical Hold? That way you don't have to pay, but you don't have to cancel either.

Congrats on passing your math final! I was in band- understand that rush! Congrats to your daughter on her accomplishments,

Just remember, don't stress, the important things will get done! Hey the cards are out! That's a definite bonus!

Have a great weekend!

P.S. I am a Curves owner, and attendance has been way down since Thanksgiving, we are not the priority right now! :(

I am a former band parent - 3 kids and 11 years! It is a great ride.

I have my final paper to turn in tomorrow and I haven't written anything yet. Been thinking a lot about it but nothing concrete. Congrats on the algebra class!

Today's Plan

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

I think that I am still in denial about my shoulder :) I am still taking my anti-inflammatory meds though. I am a non compliant patient! I think that comes from being a nurse LOL! emoticon Anyhow, I am trying to listen to my body and that includes in the area of eating as well! I have to study most of the day today, but I plan on taking a break around 11am to go to Curves for 30mins :) Will post an update later! I am procrastinating about getting into my algebra can you tell??

You think you are a non-compliant patient! There is someone with whom I am acquainted who is mentally challenged, who thinks she can change her med dosages without asking her doctor. She will talk about it to everyone else, but leaves her doctor out of the loop! And these are antidepressants!
