Anyone Sold Their Jewelry Locally & If So Any Tips?

Friday, August 12, 2011

My grocery savings have been super this week and I'm thrilled with the items I've been able to get for free or close to free.

So I've been watching the news for a while and keep seeing how much gold has gone up in price. Since I'm in decluttering mode full force, I was inspired when I saw on the news some lady taking her gold jewelry to a jewelry store or pawn shop (don't know which it was) and getting a very nice check for it all.

That inspired me to finally take the time to clean out our drawers and look for unwanted items that I could possibly get some money for and I plan to do that today if nothing happens. I've been meaning to do that for a long time but never could find the time, but now I'm going to take the time and see what I get offered.

Has anyone ever sold their unwanted gold/silver items and if so what are your suggestions/tips? I plan to go to a few different places for estimates on what they would give me, but not sure if I am supposed to negotiate with them or not.

Any suggestions/help is much appreciated because we sure could use the money right now with all the bills we have coming in, but I don't want to get taken. My husband and I did a little research online to get an idea of what to expect, but I would love any feedback from those who have actually sold their items.

You guys must have seen the same news segment that I did because I remember the woman's earring back was said to be worth $50!

I'm going to go to a few places today if I get the time and see what each says in regard to what they will offer me.

Are you supposed to negotiate? In other words, if they give you a price are you supposed to counter offer that?

I would never allow them to take it somewhere that I can't see and I know even broken gold jewelry is valuable since there are places they can send it to who melt it/refine it, etc.

Any tips are most welcome and thanks to everyone who has responded so far! emoticon

I saw on the news last night that the current price is $1800 an ounce. I thought about weighing it and then at least have an idea what it should be worth. They also suggested you go to a few dealers before you sell and to only go to places that weigh it and look at it in front of you. They said don't let them take it away to another room. Even earing backs are worth about $51.

More Great Grocery Trips

Thursday, August 11, 2011

I had another great day shopping with double coupons (super doubles actually) today at Harris Teeter. I had alternative coupons because I knew some items would be out of stock (and they were), but I managed to get my 20 coupons doubled with not too much of an issue.

I stopped by Bi-Lo (another grocery store in my area) and got 3 packages of meat that were marked down super low as well as some Land O' Lakes eggs for 19 cents a carton after coupons and their buy 1 get 1 free special on them!!! I got my kids some yogurt for 50 cents (the 4-carton type, not individual yogurts) each and had more coupons and could have gotten more but my fridge is filling up rapidly!

I managed to sell a few things this morning which was awesome, I just wish I could get rid of these things faster than I am.

Inflated - Thanks so much! I feel my blogs are monotonous at times so it's nice to hear that someone enjoys them. emoticon

I'm so happy when I can find super cheap deals for my family. It just makes my day and it makes me want to work harder to find more deals that we want/need.

I like reading your blogs. I am a bargain shopper. We had to give up our newspaper due to finances and it has cut into our savings on groceries big time. I don't get the store ads or coupons.

I like to read about your "snags," as I call them, where you get something you wanted for very little or for free. I like that you snagged a Swiffer mop.

Thanks, it being that we're an one-income family I try to find as many bargains as I possibly can to help stretch our money.

I'm especially happy when I find bargains on meat, which is normally so expensive as well as other items in the grocery store.

Suze - Awwww, thanks so much! There are people way better than me at saving money, but I don't do bad, LOL.

The roof is still not fixed and neither is the air conditioner on the car. The person from Honda was contacted again by my husband and he said he was still working on trying to save us money on the cost of that. I sure hope so because it's crazy expensive!!! We're on the list for our roof to be replaced, but it's a long list since so many people had roof damage and we keep getting rain, which keeps you on the list longer since they can't do as much work when it rains.

You are limited to "doubling" 20 coupons a day but you can use more than 20 coupons, they just won't be doubled and will be face value only. They track your store card and unless you have another VIC card (name of the store card from Harris Teeter) from a neighbor or someone not living in your household who won't be using it that day, that's all you can get doubled per day.

It means driving to the store each day for 20 doubled coupons, but I save so much it is worth it. I also used those bigger coupons (like $3 off) off some items and combined with an e-coupon I got items free. Those didn't double since they only double up to a $1.98 coupon on super double events, but I still saved tons of money.

If an item is for instance on sale for $1.59 and you have a $1.00 on super double days, you will only get $1.59 off (item free) and won't make a profit (it won't be doubled to $2 off).

Hope that helps!

emoticon You are of course, the reining Queen of Couponing in my book! So that is how it works with double coupons- they set a price limit and the number of coupons that can be used daily. Does this mean you have to try and go in daily this week in order to get the best deal for $ and quantity?

Is it possible to go in shopping one trip, head to the car unload, then go back in to shop again or is that not allowed?

What has been decided on the Honda's air conditioning? Any ideas on when you roof is being fixed? You've got a lot of projects you are juggling with some major scheduling and costs but one thing I know for sure- You have got the abilities to cope and conquer it all! emoticon

Had a Blast at The Grocery Store Today!

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

I had a wonderful visit to Harris Teeter this morning. I got so many things that were needed, not just things that were free (although I did get things free) or things that I had tons of already. It was a little crowded and I saw a lot of people with coupon binders there.

I saved tons of money and got a total of $88 off with coupons (electronic and regular coupons). Although the car was hot, I was prepared for what to get should some items be out of stock (and they were) and it didn't take me long to get in and out due to that.

I'm going to get my coupons straightened out again for tomorrow morning and I will have alternative coupons ready should I run into more items being out of stock (which of course they will be as everyone is buying the same things since we all have the same coupons, LOL). The coupons are great this go around as are the sales so I'm just ecstatic and happy that I am able to go even if I have to go in a super hot car. emoticon emoticon

I love providing for my family in that way and although I really hate cutting out coupons, filing them, and then going through them to find the best coupons to save money with, I emoticon saving money and buying things that I normally wouldn't be able to afford.

I hope some of these items that I'm purchasing are still around to make it easier for my husband when I get my surgery next month and I plan to be prepared so that they aren't having to run out to restaurants (yikes, too expensive) to eat since I won't be up to cooking much then.

Wow! $88 off in coupons? That is fantastic! I wish I could do that. I'll use maybe two coupons or so every once in a while. And, Harris Teeter is fantastic. I love it. Almost as much as I love Whole Foods.

Getting Air Conditioner Fixed Vs. Not Having Transportation

Tuesday, August 09, 2011

I'm anxiously getting my coupons straightened out and sorted for what is supposed to be super doubles at Harris Teeter tomorrow (meaning all coupons $1.98 are less are doubled, up to 20 coupons a day).

I say anxiously because we are "supposed" to hear from Honda today on whether or not they will help with the cost of our air conditioner that quit on less than 54,000 miles. They quoted me $1685 to fix the air conditioner (what????) and I had to pay almost $100 just to get a quote. Crazy!!!

Of course I want my air conditioner fixed and will be thrilled if they will help us with the cost (which I don't expect to happen) but that will mean I will be without a car, vs. a super hot car with no air conditioner for super doubles tomorrow! LOL Can you see my dilemma?

I've been good about not buying a lot of groceries lately, trying to save room for super doubles since I can get things free or close to it usually and I was looking forward to the craziness of it all plus the money savings that goes with it.

I've been a listing fool lately trying to sell some items in my home before the church consignment sale this month. The reason for that is that is less I have to label with price tags and less that I have to worry being lost or put in someone's pile when the end of the sale is over. It happens because almost every time I go to one of these sales and go to pick up my unsold items and take them home, I go through them and find someone else's things.

I know that means that my things got mixed up in someone else's stuff as well. I wish that people would pay attention to the consignor numbers better and as a result of this happening so many times over the years, I tend to try to sell the things that I really don't want to chance that happening with locally.

It's going very slow right now and it's frustrating, but I'm slowly but surely selling a few things here and there.

Found Some Good Deals in the Grocery Store

Monday, August 08, 2011

My daughter finally starts back with her piano lessons today. Her teacher took quite a bit of time off due to obligations she had and while I know my daughter has missed going, I'm proud of her for keeping up with her lessons after almost 1 1/2 months of being away.

It's going to be almost 100 degrees today which is not going to fair well for us running around in a car without air conditioning. I have officially deemed my car "the hot car" and that's not a compliment, LOL.

I'm a little anxious because the rumors are that Harris Teeter is going to have super doubles (where they double up to a $1.98 coupon) and I'm not sure if my car will be in the shop getting fixed or not. Wednesday is when the new sales start so I suppose I'll be worrying for a few days on whether I will be able to make it there or not this round. I suppose if it comes to pass I will have to wait until my husband gets home from work and then go late in the evening, but the hard part is waiting since most of the great deals (meaning cheap or free items) will most probably be gone. emoticon emoticon

Of course if we don't get it fixed we will be about to pass out by the time we get to the store, LOL. I did stop by Harris Teeter (no super doubles, but they have doubles every day when they don't have the special weeks) yesterday and did really well. I stopped by because I wanted to get a few things that were going to be cheap or free in case I didn't get a chance to this week.

I got Gillette body wash for free (made a profit of $1) due to it being on sale and I had a $2 coupon and I had saved a $2 electronic coupon on my card! emoticon I also got some Crest mouth rinse for 49 cents after my $2 coupon and $2 electronic coupon.

I'm not big on desserts or snack bars but I also bought some Fiber One brownies that are 90 calories that were on sale and I had a coupon that was doubled (got $1.50 off) and also had a 40 cents electronic coupon so paid 60 cents for them. I'm not a big brownie lover either (yeah, I know I'm weird like that) but I know my daughter or husband will eat them.

My husband has been asking about me getting some Luigi's Italian ice in the mango flavor (that he and my son absolutely love) but of course they know to wait until I find a great deal. They had them at HT buy 1 get 1 free and I had coupons that were once again doubled so I believe I paid around 50 cents a box for them.

I bypass all the other expensive items there because to me they are not a cheap store, but with sales items, coupons (that are doubled if they are 99 cents or less) and electronic coupons on top of that, I can pay next to nothing for items that my family enjoys or needs.

In anticipation of super doubles I bought 3 Sunday papers yesterday since there were over $200 worth of coupons in the paper. I managed to get them cut out yesterday but have to make sure I get them filed and ready for super doubles before Wednesday. It will be a lot of work, but it sure is worth the time and effort when I save so much money!

I'm so sorry I never responded to your question, it's been nuts around my house since my surgery and prior to that.

I have my coupons in categories in my coupon file box. I also have subcategories for those coupons that you tend to get a lot of like "frozen", "dairy", etc.

In other words I put one category as "dairy" another one as "dairy-bread", "dairy-butter", etc.

It helps me to find the coupons quicker that way instead of having to look through a huge stack and find the correct coupon.
