I just realized.. only 18 more pounds until I reach healthy weight

Those who know I am losing weight, ask me in person a lot how much I have lost. They usually don't ask what my GOAL is. I have had pounds lost as my focus for a while now. I keep saying "I lost 77 so far, and I want to lose 1 more pound by the end of the month". I looked at my ticker now, and I should be saying WOW, I have 18 pounds to lose until I get to 155! For my height, 155 is at the high end of the healthy range. I haven't weighed 155 since 2005.

When I first started Spark, I was outside walking everyday and thought I would every day! Unfortunately, that stopped after two weeks because other parts of my life were "more important". I still ate foods like cheese fries, mozz sticks, cheeseburgers, and chicken fingers. I had to completely change my eating habits to fit in more veggies & fruits. I tracked all of that "bad" food, and I had a hard time saying No to foods like that. I changed my eating habits, and now it is easier for me to say no to most foods. (except french fries but hopefully I will fix that soon!)

Over the 13 months of Spark, I have tried to track almost every day. I realized I don't have the motivation right now to workout everyday. Instead of seeing exercise as a chore, I decided to schedule it. That's right, I schedule my exercise in my daily planner. Exercise is something I want to do and have to do to stay healthy. So I have 5K training tonight, a Doctor's Appointment Friday at 10a, Zumba Friday at 6:30p, and the 5K walk Saturday at 9am. If I treat exercise the same way I do with dinner with friends, meetings, birthday parties, and other appointments, it really helps me out. I tell myself I can't miss it and then I won't! I know this won't work for everyone, but I am glad I realized what I need to do to keep moving forward!

This 5% Fall challenge is really helping me see my goals differently. Instead of focusing on the high number of pounds lost, I want to keep my big goal in mind. It is nice to say I lost X pounds, but the whole point of this isn't to get a high number. I want to be at a lower number to be healthier and happier. Once I reach my goal, I want to keep going. I don't want to maintain at 155. I would like to keep working hard. When I was 16, I weighed 140 pounds. I don't know if my body now will ever get that low, but I would to at least Try to get below 155. I am not trying to be a size 2 or anything, but I don't want to reach 155 and then be done.

I am so grateful for Spark & the wonderful community here. The articles and tools on the website really are great, but my favorite part is definitely the members! Reading other blogs really helps me! Thank you to everyone that has supported me in one way or another! Spark has taught me that the scale isn't my enemy. I am in control of me! Keep on sparking and goals will be reached!

And great job on figuring out what works for YOU with planning your exercise. Different tactics work for different people, and unfortunately, some people give up before they can figure out what unique combination of tools works for them. Congratulations on getting it figured out!

    Many times when you start out to lose weight, your goals or reasons for doing so change significantly over time. 18 pounds from your goal weight is a huge accomplishment. I think it's great you want to keep working past that as well. I say I'd be happy at 175, but I would like to push past that and get down to 150. I don't know if it'll happen, but it's definitely worth a shot. Just keep reevaluating at each stage to determine what weight truly "fits" you.

Fall 5% Challenge Commitment!

I never thought I would be in a challenge like this. I am extremely excited about it. I saw some other people join the team, but I didn't think I was ready to join something like this. Then I got an invite, and I thought... hey, I guess I am ready!

I just started my scheduled exercise last month. It is really awesome to have a REAL goal. I have my 8 week 5K training which is.. probably going to take more than 8 weeks! I still didn't decide what I want to do with Yoga. I will do Zumba at least once a week. I will fit in more time for my jogging. I am starting to wake up a little earlier every day. I am hoping to be able to get some walking and jogging before work some days.

Fall 5% Challenge Commitment:
I will post my weigh-ins every week. (probably on Fridays)
I will track my exercise to help out myself and my team!
I will stay on track with my calories/fat/etc the best I can.
I will post more frequently on the forum/team!
I will NOT eat any french fries - for EIGHT WEEKS
I will exercise at least 10 minutes five days a week.
I will exercise at least 30 minutes three days a week.
I will go to bed on nights when I feel tired/ready. I won't stay up late just because.
I will do the best I can with the changing weekly challenges!
I will not get discouraged if I do not meet the 5% loss in 8 weeks.

I am feeling really pumped up about this Challenge! I am at 173 now, so 5% would be 8.65 pounds. I wonder if I will lose any more weight before the challenge starts! The official date isn't out yet! It is my first challenge, and I think it will really help me out in my journey. I have come this far, and I know I can do more to better my lifestyle!

We don't have to give anything up, but I really want to give up eating French Fries! I LOVE THEM. They are one "bad" food my stomach actually lets me eat without getting upset after. I don't eat pizza, burgers, hot dogs, pork sausage, cheese steaks & a lot of other food which I USED To love. I still say "Oh man, I love mozz sticks... well I used to love them". In my mind, they are still delicious, even though I haven't even had one bite in months! I DO Love fries, and I do eat them! I gave up chocolate for lent once & another year I gave up cheese. I think I can do this. No french fries for 8 weeks. I think it will actually help out with the weight loss! I will have more salads or fruit salad instead of fries!

I have my first 5K walk on Saturday. Even though I am just walking, it will be nice to have the atmosphere. It is for a great cause (cystic fibrosis).

There are two other 5K races I signed up for to try and jog - Sept 30th and Oct 13th. I also signed up for the Spark Virtual 5K the week of Oct 29th!

    Good plans for 5% challenge! I did my first challenge last January the same way, because a friend invited me. I'm looking forward to great results however much I do or don't lose; progress and consistency are the main things. emoticon emoticon

I did some research today about running shoes and Zumba shoes. I contacted my Zumba instructor and she told me she has dance shoes. She told me about some Ryka shoes - apparently a lot of people wear them to Zumba.

I tried on three pairs of Ryka at the shoe store today. One pair fit ok, but when I stood on my toes, the material crinkled together and it felt really funny on my toes. So those are out unless I order a different kind online and try them out - or find a different type of shoe store that may carry other styles. I tried one a few pairs of running shoes. I like two, but they are expensive. I will look online to read some reviews about them. Depending on the brand & type of shoe, I am either a 9 or 9 1/2. Some pairs looked really pretty but felt too thin/unsupportive. Ugh!

Anyways, I have yoga tonight - which doesn't need any shoes! I have three yoga classes left. If I want to continue, it will cost $70 for a 5 pack over 60 days or $130 for a 10 pack of classes. Zumba is $35 for 5 classes.. so I don't know if I want to do zumba twice a week? or spend the money do yoga less often maybe? I don't know. I could try to find a gym membership that offers classes, but I am not sure if I want to do that. I don't want to sign a contact at LA Fitness. I heard horror stories about cancellations & people still being charged. grrrr.

So this week I have Yoga, 5K training, Zumba, and more 5K training to do woooo. I want to fit in more 5K training, but I hate that I get sweaty after haha. I have the time to do it during my lunch break, but I don't want to get changed into workout clothes, get sweaty, and then get changed again and go back to work!

    Personally, I'd pay for Zumba and get a Yoga dvd if you want to do it still. Unless you really love your instructor and people in the class, yoga is so much more about yourself and is a fairly 'quiet' activity even when you're with a big group of people in a studio. I think Zumba has so much energy and you get to know the people you're with better and I have way more fun when I do Zumba with people versus by myself whereas it doesn't matter to me if I do yoga with people or not. And in a zumba class, the instructors get new music and new routines quite often which you don't get with a zumba dvd.

    Don't give up on the shoe shopping. Try some outlet type Ross , Marshalls, TJmacks,mark down racks in all the stores and keep at it. Think of it as a treasure hunt perfect shoe at the right price.

    Good shoes are not a choice but a necessity. You don't want to end up with foot problems. I've had one style of Ryka that fit well, but find I'm doing better with Sketchers.

    Patti - I don't mind it when I have time to relax and get to my normal temperature again. I don't want to jog & then go back to work right after haha. So I just walk on my lunch breaks instead sometimes! It will be tough when the main Tax season starts up again and I won't have any free nights!

    I love feeling all sweaty after running. I don't know why it just feels good-lol. I hate shopping for shoes too. I need to get a really good pair for running but I wear a size 5-6 & not much choice so I know what you are going through. As far as the yoga just think what you are getting out of each of them & which benefits you more. You can always do Zumba at home with a disc.

I cleaned out my closet & dresser a bit ago. Bye bye big clothes! I have two empty drawers now. I decided I will get some cheap workout capris & pants for the cooler months. I like having a drawer just for workout clothes! I do need to figure out which socks to get. I have teeny no-show socks or crazy christmas/halloween socks haha.

Zumba was great last night. I have been noticing my big toes are really sore at the end of class. I think I should get some running shoes - do you think running shoes are good for Zumba too? I would like running shoes for my 5K training. I am not sure if they would be good for Zumba though. Any advice on that would be great! I only have walking sneakers right now, and I wear them while jogging and to Zumba.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend. The weather looks like it will be great in my area! I am hoping to get some 5K training in at least one of the days. I will be doing a little bit of walking at least!

    I have a drawer of work out clothes too - its great!

I use Thorlo's socks. Since I switched to them several years ago, I have never had to worry about blisters or anything. Even when I do the 8.15 mile run (that I run and walk). They provide some cushioning, but also help to wick moisture away so no blisters.

You can do Zumba with running shoes, and that's how I started, but there is a lower risk of injury using dance/cheerleading or plain tennis shoes. I think the shoes I've been using this year are Nike Musique - I know they are Nike, but they might be last year's "model". With all the Zumba I do, I think its about time I get a new pair. I definitely noticed a difference in how my feel felt after switching from running shoes to the other shoes. Of course I still have running shoes that I use for runs and walks.

    Isn't it fun to clean out those too-big clothes? I can't say I have a whole drawer full of workout clothes, but I own more than I ever have and use them! Good to know about proper shoes and zumba. I love my rocker bottom Skechers, but I've learned the hard way that they're not good for everything--like a medium level spur of the moment hike.

    I have two drawers in my dresser for workout clothes - one for tops and one for bottoms. It makes me feel like a real athlete ;)

For zumba, I wouldnt use running sneakers. They are really there for stablility and shouldnt be used for twisting and turning - you'll just injure yourself. Try to get a pair of cross trainers, or even a pair of dance shoes. :)

    I recall hearing something on the radio a few weeks ago about Zumba injuries, due in large part to wearing the wrong shoes. If you wear running shoes, they will have too much traction on the floor, which can put bad stress on your ankles and knees. I believe they said actual dance shoes were the best choice. Something that is made to help you move, not to keep you from sliding like running shoes.
Why don't you ask your instructor at your next class?

    I really want to try Zumba just don't know yet. I know they have special shoes that they sell for Zumba and I think they sell some cheap ones at Wal Mart that look just like them dont know. Good luck with your training

I make turkey chili last night - yum yum! I used diced tomatoes with no salt added instead of tomato sauce. I added a hot pepper and carrots which I normally don't do. It was really great! My Mom & I took the dogs for a mile walk last night. It was so nice out!

After I went to bed, my dog was crying a little bit. He cries most nights right when I go to bed because he would rather be with my parent's dog. After a few minutes I heard his collar jingle a lot and he calmed down. I looked to see what he was doing, and he was laying on my dresser hahaha. If dogs take after their owners, then I must be super strange! I guess I am kind of weird like that. Sometimes when I go over someone else's house, I sit on the floor instead of the couch. I always get told "you can sit on the couch if you want". I do sometimes, but I do like sitting on the floor a lot haha. I know I am a big goofball who does some silly things. Apparently my dog does too!!

I can't wait for Zumba tonight. I am still a little sore, but I am still excited! I kept humming one of the songs in the shower this morning. Woooo! OH! and it is almost Friday yeehaw!

    my dog is silly too. right now she is jealous of the kitten. so when she sees the kitten she moves closer to me and lays more on my lap. The kitten loves the dog though. They are hilarious. I often lay with them instead of getting up to work out. They are so loving! I guess I wouldn't mind being like my dog! She is awesome! emoticon

I don't know why, but as I was reading about your dog, all I could think was a golden retriever or some other dog that size! Then I saw the picture and realized your dog is a small one and can easily fit on top of a dresser! LOL

    Your chili looks delicious. I've gotten in the habit of rounding up whatever veggies need using up and adding them to spaghetti sauce. My current batch had a package of broccoli, cauliflower, and baby carrots. Great way to sneak in more veggies.

Your dog is so cute. My kitten entertained us this morning by sitting in a shoebox. She looked very pleased with herself and very silly.
