Advice Please: Slow-Cooking & Food Processors?

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

I have been making some Spark recipes lately - I tried out baked ziti with non-fat cottage cheese! I also made a low fat buffalo dip. yum!

I want to try out another Spark recipe tomorrow while I am at work.
The recipe does not call for any liquid. I checked all of the comments and no one really mentioned adding it to it- maybe because it is common knowledge? My Mom told me I need to add liquid to it or else it will burn. Should I add anything or do you think it will be ok the way it is? I could add a little chicken broth I guess?

24 oz boneless, skinless chicken breast
1 yellow bell pepper, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 (16 oz) can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
1 (14.5 oz ) can petite diced tomatoes with basil and oregano or any style of canned tomatoes
1 dash salt
1 dash black pepper
2 t dried basil
1 t dried thyme

Also, I was thinking about getting a food processor. I saw a guacamole recipe that looks really good. I also saw a peanut butter recipe that looks interesting- I just don't have a food processor! Any advice on where to start looking for one? I don't want to spend a ton of money for an "excellent" one. I just want one that works!

You don't need a food processor for guacamole. It is easy to just mash the avocados with a fork once they're cut into chunks. I kind of prefer the texture that way, anyway. With that said, I have a 7-cup KitchenAid processor that also has a 3-cup insert for making smaller recipes. I think it was about $70 at CostCo and it works pretty well. It will do thin slices and shred carrots and it's good for making hummus. I probably wouldn't bother with one of the really little processors - cup is too small and they won't have enough horsepower for many jobs. Not sure about the peanut butter recipe - many stores have the machines that grind the peanuts into butter that you can buy in bulk, so maybe that would work instead?

I'd likewise guess that the tomatoes will be enough, just don't drain the liquid. I've gotten hooked on slowcookers, too. I have three--small, medium, and large.

Here's the simplest recipe I have for the large or medium ones:

1 family pack of chicken thighs
1 bottle Sweet Baby Ray's barbeque sauce

That's it. I like to take the skin off the thighs, but you can just rinse and toss them in the pot as is. The chicken turns out tender and tasty. I love great results, no work recipes.

As the others said- the tomatoes should take care of the liquid.

There is a yahoo group called slow cooking recipes and these ladies really are knowledge about their slowcookers/crock pots and can assist you through anything. You might want to join them for their knowledge and future cooking projects.

Also guessing that the meal you are cooking is on low for 8-10 hours which would not cause it to burn.

Check Bed bath and beyond for your appliances. they give 20 percent off each product with coupons and you can get a good one at a savings.

I wouldn't add any liquid, the tomatoes will do that for you. Let us know how it turns out!

I would say that the tomatoes will be enough liquid along with what cooks off of the chicken. You can buy a food processor at Wal-Mart, Target, or a hardware store. Good luck!

Zumba! and should I get a hair cut???

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Some points about my Zumba class last night:
-It seemed to be a bit harder - she did a few different songs, but it was a better workout because of it!
-I have terrible rhythm! I like to stand in the back because I am all over the place haha. I don't mind people watching me, because no one does - they are all focused on their own moves. But I just take up a lot of room, so I like the extra space!
-Anyone can do zumba - some of the ladies could barely move their legs up, but I was so happy they were there. One woman basically just moved her arms, but I know she was determined!
-I LOVED it again! I can't wait to go back!
-I am not as sore this morning as I was after the first class. I am ready for next time!

So I have been growing my hair out for a while now. I got it trimmed twice in the past year, but only to get some of the dead ends off. I still want my hair long, but it is getting really dry. I kind of want to get a few inches off so it lays better. I let my hair dry naturally, but it still feels dry at the ends. I keep thinking about getting it cut, but then I like how long it is when I see it down in the mirror! I have long layers in it so it is more full - I just don't want the hair dresser to mess it up. I went two months ago for a trim, but I still had dry ends after so it was almost like a waste of $20.

If I have time, I want to go for a walk/run tonight. I think it is funny I have been wanting to work out for a year now & I finally have the motivation to do it. I hope it sticks around for a while!!

I hope everyone has a great Tuesday! KEEP SPARKING!

Your hair looks like it needs some volume...layers?

Have you tried the macademia oil products? I love the leave-in oil and their other products are great too.

Yoga, Zumba, 5K, on and on. Keep trying new things, you won't get bored.
You don't have to be good at it - just keep an open mind.
Anything you do is more than more than half of the population is willing to try!

Your Zumba class sounds exciting. Isn't it fun to find something you like? If the dry ends are bothering you, go have a consult at a salon. Look at pics of shorter but not short cuts to see if anything appeals to you and ask about conditioning to prevent another round of dry ends.

Have you tried those deep conditioning treatments? You do them once every week or two; they can really help nix dry ends. You can also get a hair mask (masque) as well, but I've never used them.

75 pounds lost & I am pushing to get rid of 20 more!!

Monday, August 27, 2012

My mini-goal for this month is to be at 175 pounds by Sept 1st. I have been saying NO even more to the "bad" foods. I also have been trying to walk/move more. I had Zumba & Yoga once. I weighed myself yesterday and I got to 175!! 175 pounds on the scale and 75 pounds lost so far. I would like to lose 20 more to get to the high-end of the BMI scale for my height. I haven't weighed 155 lbs since 2005. I am so proud of myself. I have a lot to go, but I am not letting that hold me back! I want to keep moving forward! I know I will hit at least 95 pounds lost!!!

I took a screen-shot of my Spark ticker because it still amazes me. I say the numbers I have lost over & over to myself. I also see my clothes size changing. But just seeing how far I have come on the ticker really helps me out! I use this site so much to help me - so seeing it on here really pushes me to work harder! My health is very important to me, but my goals are also important!

I have my second Zumba class tonight. I am actually really excited about it! No more nervousness! I don't know if my Mom is coming to this one or not. She did tell me she would rather go on Thursday nights, so I am thinking about going on Thursdays with her. I don't have yoga again until 9/10 and 9/17 because of the holiday coming up. I still need to start my 5K training.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week. KEEP SPARKING!

My mind still isn't used to my "smaller" self!

Friday, August 24, 2012

Last night I put on a pair of sweat/capris that I always used to wear. I found them in my drawers & forgot how much I loved them! I put them on & they kept falling down haha. Damn! I am glad they are too big, but now I need to get more lounging clothes. They don't have a drawstring so I couldn't tighten them. They are way too wide now too.

Also, my Mom bought me a pair of pants two weeks ago because they were on sale. She knows all of my work pants are too big in one way or another. They are size 18 or 16 & are too baggy in the butt/tummy area or are just too loose overall! She got me a size 14. I have one other pair of 14 sized pants. I tried that first pair on a month ago in the store, and I was surprised they fit. But they were plus sized 14s. My Mom got me a pair of regular 14s! I have a few pairs of Walmart shorts that are 14s, but I just assumed they were sized differently than department store dress pants. I put off trying them off because I have been feeling "fat" lately. Most of the time, I pick out my work clothes the night before. For some weird reason, I finally told myself to try them on this morning even though I had different pants picked out. I took them off of the hanger, went to put them on and thought "Damn, these are way too small". I pulled them on, zippered them & buttoned them. and wow. They actually fit! They are still a bit funky around my belly when I sit- but all of my pants are like that. I can't wait to lose more of my belly! Anyways, my mind told me there was no way I would fit into pants THAT small. I still look at some of my newer large shirts, and I am still not used to them fitting me! I was wearing 2X & 3X shirts for years.

I feel so proud of myself. I really like the way the pants look on me - and now I want to get a few new pairs to replace those old baggy ones. One lady at work keeps commenting saying "go get a better pair of pants that fit! You will feel better!" She is right. Clothes that fit do make me feel better! I always feel funny when I wear baggy clothes at work. I always have to adjust them & I worry about them falling down! Now I just have to save up some money & find some good sales!

A few months ago I went through my wardrobe and packed away my clothes that were way too big. It seems like I need to do that again. I will probably have most of my clothes put away again.. so I will have to get some more! I want to go to the Goodwill store again and get some good deals from them. I will probably donate some of my 2X & 3X clothes too.

On another note, Sept 1st is creeping up fast! I weighed myself this morning and I was up to 177.2. Hopefully I can get to 175 by the 1st! I need to start my 5K training too. I hope that will help a bit.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! KEEP SPARKING! I know the weekend is a time off for a lot of people, but don't forget to try & be healthy on your days off too!

Sometimes I don't think I'm making any changes and then I'll put on a pair of pants that weren't fitting and now they fit perfectly or, like you, that fit and now are too big--it helps to reassure me things are going in the right direction! emoticon

Great progress! It's such a good feeling when you get into a smaller size. My advice, if you can, buy a couple of pairs of new work pants and throw out all the old ones. It really will help to keep you on track.

Best of luck with the rest of your weight loss journey!

My first yoga experience & 5K training advice?

Thursday, August 23, 2012

So I had my first yoga class yesterday. When I parked, I noticed how beautiful the area was. There was a small lake, barn with chickens, wild turkeys, and it was very peaceful. I signed in & the one lady explained what I Should do. The whole atmosphere was very calming. It was nice. It didn't feel rushed like the rest of the world. I put out my mat & was told to get some foam blocks and a blanket. There were about 12 people in the class with me - all beginners! I sat and waited until the class started. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be - actually it wasn't hard, it was just different. It was strange to hold some poses while trying to relax at the same time. I liked when they said to focus on which body parts were stretching & also which side had more tension. Some other poses were very relaxing and I could focus on my breathing. We did a Tree Pose and I actually didn't fall over! The last few minutes were my favorite - we laid down in a pose and just relaxed and tried not to think about anything. I haven't done that in a long time. It was nice to let go of everything and just focus on me. When I left the class, I saw one of the outside cats. It walked by two other people and came right up to me. It rubbed on my legs for a minute and then was rolling on the ground. Kitty was so cute!

Yes I have not been to the dentist in 5 years - yikes! But I went this morning before work & my teeth are all clean. No cavities! Woohoo! I thought I may of had one in one area of my mouth, but apparently not. I just need to floss a bit more - as usual!

I was going to do Zumba on Mondays & Yoga on Wednesdays, but my Mom wants to go to Zumba on Thursday night now. I am going to do my 4 more yoga classes Mondays now. I don't think I will continue yoga - it seems to be very expensive. I may get more workout dvds to do at home for the other nights.

I also decided I want to start training for a 5K. There are a few in the area I live in. I signed up to walk for CF next month and I thought... why can't I do other 5K? They are for a good cause & I think it will be great exercise. I just need to do some research to see the best way to do that! If anyone has any advice or training ideas, please let me know!

I agree, yoga is very relaxing..it feels good. Did you know it is highly recommended if you suffer from anxiety or depression. I love yoga! However, I agree, it is very expensive. I have a membership at the Y and if I want to do Yoga I have to pay more money for those classes.
I have been trying to work my way up to running 5km on the treadmill. For some reason I find it a bit easier than running outside.

I started running again after many years of being very ill. I walked quickly at first, then started running 50 steps walking a few minutes, running 50 steps, walking a few minutes until I could do 30 minutes. Thsn I added more steps of running (25 or 50 each interval with the walking in between) When I was running 150 steps I decreased the time between running intervals. You can do any amount you like and are comfortable with. I like Jeff Galloway training. I didn't find it until I was running more but it lets you continue your walk intervals. You can search his training and many others. There is a C25k team on spark and they also have a training schedule. You can sign up for a virtual race, too. I'm currently training for a half-marathon. Let me know how it goes. Have fun running! You'll love it. Don't overdo and you won't give up. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Glad you found a peaceful Yoga place! It can be hard in our fast paced lives to slow down.

Like KAPELAKIN said - C25K programs are great. Basically its about training for a 5K by slowing building up your running time. Alternating walking and running while going the distance or time of the day.

Good luck!
