finished my training- should be starving right now!

Friday, July 20, 2012

I really enjoyed my week of training. It was awesome to work with the TEACCH trainers, my fellow participants, and especially the students. I am so glad I talked my colleague into attending with me. We got so many ideas and accomplished a lot of planning together during down-times! I have learned so much and gotten so many great ideas, but I am so exhausted and really need a break!

Yesterday and today, I got in 20 minute walks in the morning before leaving and also walked yesterday during lunch break. Today, I didn't even get to finish my lunch, let alone have time to walk, so I'm glad I got it in before I left. My friend overslept, so I was late from waiting for her then drove down on my own, so I didn't have time to eat breakfast when I got there. I had half my salad for lunch in a rush and had a protein bar around 2:00. My girls were picking fights with each other and me, so I didn't feel like eating at dinner either. They had McDonalds anyway, so I would have eaten at home, but I am really just not hungry at all. Too much stress and too overwhelmed with everything right now. I just hope my low calorie intake doesn't cause my weight to spike back up!

Planning to turn off the alarm clock and sleep in tomorrow, then get started painting the shelves for my classroom. I bought some magnetic paint so I can use the sides and backs of some of the shelves to create activity boards. Hoping the rain holds off so I can get it done!

mid-week weigh in and workouts! If you've met one child with Autism...

Wednesday, July 18, 2012

I made a point to get up early to workout this morning. Got in a 20 minute strength session. We have been taking working lunches, and I take a long time to eat since I got braces, so walking during lunch wasn't an option. However, my group finished with our projects early, so we had 20 minutes free and I drafted my colleague to walk with me during that break. Then, we stopped at the mall to visit the teacher store there. I forgot which end the store was at, so we got in another 15 minutes walking from one end of the mall to the other and back. We'll be going to another teacher store on the way home tomorrow (It was closed by the time we got there today after the mall and getting spray paint at wal-mart for some shelving I need to paint)

I ate breakfast at our training today, which did seem to help with hunger before lunch. I brought some fruit and unsalted peanut butter. Had a great lunch, supplementing my salad with some carrots, baby sugar snap peas, radishes, and edamame for protein. Snacked on grapes and cherries, then had spaghetti squash with my homemade sauce and lots of veggies for dinner. Evening snack was a protein bar and some cherries and grapes. Dh and I had a meeting, so he ordered pizza for himself and the kids. I declined, cooking my dinner and eating before I left.

I am loving all the fresh fruit and veggies dh and I were able to stock up on on our last grocery trip!
Had another great day at my workshop. Enjoying the company and discussions as well as working with students with different forms of Autism. The student we worked with today had just recently been diagnosed even though he is going into seventh grade. He is a student who, if you didn't know he had autism and weren't looking for the characteristics, you would just think he was disorganized and needy! Amazing how true the statement is: if you've met one child with Autism, you've met one child with Autism!

Stepped on the scale today, worried about the damage I've done with my inactivity this week, but thankfully, I've had no change since Saturday's weigh-in. No progress, but I'll take it!

I also teach students with autism and none of them are the same just like any other child.
You did great on the food during your training. I think no gain is progress!

Great getting in some exercise and with all the fruits and veggies. So true about meeting one child with Autism. My class of little guys make great eye contact with some people, not with all people, haha just like all little guys. And they definitely have people they prefer to work with, and people they do not prefer. 4 weeks till be are back together.

So true. I teach students with special needs, worked specifically with autism for 12 years. I loved it. My oldest brother had autism, so I totally agree with what you are saying. They are not all alike, in fact the one trait that you hear so often, about no eye-contact is often NOT true. Enjoyed your blog, thank you.

Enjoying my workshop and really learning a lot, but struggling to get in a workout!

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

The Autism workshop I am participating in this week has been awesome! We are learning so much , then get to do things with kids so we are immediately applying what we are learning. My colleague and I have gotten so many great ideas to take back to our classrooms!

The downside is, with a 45 minute drive one way and difficulty sleeping, I am not getting in my workouts. I am eating well and maintaining nutrition despite snacks being available all day. I ordered vegetarian meals, simple salads that I am supplementing with additional veggies. And I am bringing fruit and protein bars for snacks if I need something else.

I have been eating breakfast before I leave, but eating at 6:15 and not having lunch until 12:30 isn't working for me. I am famished by lunch time, then spend the evening wanting more snacks. I stuck to fruit tonight, and added a protein bar because protein was low. Tomorrow, I am going to take my breakfast with me and eat it when I get there around 8:00 and see if that helps. I usually am not really hungry first thing in the morning anyway.

We don't have much time left before school starts. I have so much to do, painting shelves, arranging my classroom, planning and preparing, plus meetings on every workday that we have. I told dh that I wanted to go to the beach one more time before school started back, so we are going the weekend before students return. Looking forward to one last weekend in the sand and sun!

Workshops are so hard - you sit all day (or most of it), which somehow makes you MORE tired than if you'd been working with kids! I have one in San Diego in a couple of weeks, and while it's always good stuff (this will be my 5th year going), it's so hard to lose the routine.

Sounds like you have a goo plan - maybe add some nuts or small protein to help with the snacking thing in the evening?

Oh, and when I'm in a conference, one of my favorites is to do small sets of some kind of toning exercise during breaks - calf raises, squats, wall pushups - something like that. Good luck!

Sounds like you've got a well thought out plan. Good job!
Stick to it and you'll be fine.
Maybe a short walk at lunch will help to get a little cardio in. Even 10 minutes is good, right? Good luck. Enjoy the rest of your conference.

Veggie day, TMJ? National Ice Cream Day, struggling to get enough calories and workout!

Sunday, July 15, 2012

Didn't plan it, but I ate a ton of fruits and veggies today. Protein was pretty low, calories under 1,000 again and sodium was low as well.

My mouth has been hurting a lot today. I guess my braces have changed how I hold my mouth or something, and I have had some pain in my left jaw. I am set to have surgery to move the jaw forward next summer, after a year of braces. THey said this could lead to TMJ if I didn't have it taken care of...

Breakfast was fruit with some natural unsalted peanut butter. Because of the pain, I didn't eat much at my in-laws. She made spaghetti, which I haven't been eating anyway anymore, and she adds a lot of salt. Rather than risk it, I just ate my salad I brought with me and had some cantaloupe she had cut. For dinner, I decided to let the others have tomato sandwiches. I don't eat bread much anymore, and my teeth were sore, so I cut up a bunch of veggies and mixed them with a half of a laughing cow swiss wedge (pic below). It was incredibly good, so I will be making that again! Today is national ice cream day, so I went and bought ice cream for everyone. I got chocolate and vanilla for dh and the kids (what they asked for) and found a mango sorbet and vanilla greek frozen yougurt for me. I made it into a kind-of fruity banana split: 1/4 cup each of the sorbet and yogurt, 1/4 cup blackberries, 1/2 banana, and 4 strawberries. It was so good. I will definitely add the sorbet to my list of treats. Since I only ate half of the 1 serving container, I have some left for another day.

All of that, plus a few cherries, and I still came in under 1,000 calories! I don't feel hungry, but I am way low! Oh well! Early day ahead, leaving at 6:30am for an Autism workshop. At least I have a friend going with me, and they are providing food. I ordered vegetarian for my meals for the week. Tomorrow, I'll have a salad from Jason's deli!

Yes, the soreness from braces is never fun. At least your getting your teeth fixed. I had braces as a teen and then the orthodontist told my parents that I would need surgery to correct everything, including having my jaw moved forward. But my parents didn't want to spend the money. The ortho said keeping the braces on without doing the surgery would be a waste, so they were removed. I now really regret not having the surgery, but of course I had no say in the matter at the time. If I wanted to do any of that now, I would have to pay for it 100% as my insurance doesn't cover anything for adults for ortho issues.

Salad is beautiful. Sorry about your teeth. My daughter (36) is in braces for the next 2 years. Should have been done years ago, she was a resistant teen, so now she is paying, not me. Both her daughters have already been in and out of their braces, may have to do them again. Small mouth, palate expander, extractions of baby teeth, the whole routine.
Your meal day sounds absolutely yummy. We hate very well last 2 weeks. Had the grand daughters here, and they eat very healthy. So lots of fruits, veggies, lean proteins. We packed coolers every day, and went off to be active. Hope you learn lots at the conference. I could use a good autism conference. I need a boost every so often.

Temptations, grad school and 5% challenge week 3

Saturday, July 14, 2012

I have done really well this week, despite classes and a professor who brings and offers food almost daily. He was really being nice and he was really fun to have, but it was hard! He would offer to buy us lunch, but I always brought my own. He would buy a sandwich and offer us half. He had cookies one day and offered them to us: vanilla oreos, one of the few I cannot resist. I told him no because if I took one, I would eat them all, so he gave me the second box he had! When I put it in my bag, he jokingly asked the class if they wanted to be him how long it would take me to open them! I ended up taking them to my girls, after offering them back to him. He marveled at my willpower! Last day, he brought donuts for us for during the test. I did well and resisted everything that he offered the entire week.

I found myself struggling to get enough calories and sodium, but I wasn't as active either, so I shouldn't have been as hungry. I did get in workouts and got a lot done. And, I made A's in both classes, so I still have a 4.0 GPA!! Plus, I lost another 2 pounds this week! If I keep this up, I will be back in the 130s when school starts!

Down another 2 pounds for the week!

Good job on resisting your professor's temptation. It's unfortunate that he keeps bringing food and tempting you that way. But you're doing good with willpower. And great job on the grades too. It sounds like you are goal to get back to the 130s. You are I have the weight loss so far with the 5% challenge. This week was the first week I only lost 1 pound. But it wasn't surprising since I didn't exercise much and my eating wasn't best. Good luck on the rest of the challenge!
